Summary

  1. What mask for Mbappe?published at 08:37 British Summer Time 18 June

France's Kylian Mbappe was, at least, able to see the funny side after reflecting on his broken nose with an amusing post on social media.

The striker went on to X, external, formally known as Twitter, to ask fans if they have "any ideas for masks?".

The replies included pictures of a teenaged Mbappe wearing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mask, with recommendations he could wear it on his return to the France team at the Euros.

The Real Madrid forward was given the mask as a birthday present from his Paris St-Germain team-mates in 2017, to mark his 18th birthday.

I am not sure the mask would pass Uefa guidelines though!

  2. Real Madrid watch and wait...published at 08:30 British Summer Time 18 June

Of course, every injury is unique - and there could well be other factors for France manager Didier Deschamps to consider as he ponders when or whether to risk star forward Kylian Mbappe.

Real Madrid will certainly be interested observers after announcing at the start of June that they had signed Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer, although the 25-year-old will not be officially unveiled as their player until his contract with Paris St-Germain expires on 30 June.

  3. Barkley's broken nosepublished at 08:23 British Summer Time 18 June

Luton Town's Ross Barkley broke his nose during a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on March 9 in the Premier League and was back playing in their next match against Bournemouth four days later.

Barkley did not need surgery and played through the pain - he chose not to wear a mask.

The England midfielder faired quite well, scoring Luton's third goal as they stormed into a 3-0 lead before half-time, but ended up on the losing side after the Cherries came back to win 4-3.

  4. Mbappe will be 'ready for the third match'published at 08:15 British Summer Time 18 June

    Austria 0-1 France

On Kylian Mbappe's injury, the France Football Federation has said in a statement that a mask will be made so the Real Madrid forward can "contemplate a return to action after a period of treatment", which is quite open-ended.

France midfielder Adrien Rabiot has been quoted by news outlets in Madrid, external as saying that “Mbappé is fine" and would be "ready for the third match", which would be against Poland on 25 June.

If that is true, then that means the 25-year-old would miss Friday's game against the Netherlands.

  7. Stanciu's stunner deserves a second lookpublished at 07:42 British Summer Time 18 June

    Romania 3-0 Ukraine

Nicolae Stanciu's stunning opener for Romania was an early contender for goal of the tournament and provided the standout moment of their landmark win against Ukraine.

It certainly deserves a second look, or a third, or a fourth...or you could just watch it from every conceivable angle?

Romania recorded their first victory at a European Championship in 24 years with a stunning win over Ukraine in Group E.

Captain Nicolae Stanciu gave Romania a surprise lead in the 29th minute, finding the top corner with a brilliant strike from 20 yards out.

Razvan Marin then doubled the Tricolours' lead after 53 minutes with a long-range effort that squeezed under Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Romania rounded off the scoring four minutes later when Denis Dragus tapped in Dennis Man's cross from close range.

Their only previous win at the Euros came in 2000 where a late Ionel Ganea penalty helped them beat England 3-2 in the group stage.

  9. Late drama as Slovakia shock Belgiumpublished at 07:30 British Summer Time 18 June

    Belgium 0-1 Slovakia

Slovakia caused an upset in their Euro 2024 opener as they stunned Group E favourites Belgium in a chaotic encounter in Frankfurt.

There was drama in the final minutes as Romelu Lukaku thought he had equalised, only for the video assistant referee (VAR) to rule it out for handball in the build-up.

It was the second goal he had scored that had been ruled out by VAR after earlier poking in a header across goal from Amadou Onana.

Ivan Schranz put Slovakia ahead when he capitalised on a mistake at the back by Manchester City's Jeremy Doku, stunning Belgium, ranked third in the world - Slovakia are 45 places below in 48th.

After missing countless chances throughout, several falling to all-time top scorer Lukaku, Belgium eventually left empty-handed.

  11. France hold on to beat Austriapublished at 07:17 British Summer Time 18 June

    Austria 0-1 France

    Highlights: Austria 0-1 France

    But first, more on France...

Like England, they struggled to see off determined opposition in their opening match but squeaked through with a tight 1-0 win.

Their victory over Austria was settled by an own goal, with Leeds United centre-back Max Wober heading a Kylian Mbappe cross into his own net seven minutes before half-time.

Austria missed their best chance just moments earlier when Christoph Baumgartner's shot from close range was blocked by the feet of France keeper Mike Maignan.

Mbappe, who saw a first-half shot well saved by Austria keeper Patrick Pentz, produced an early contender for the miss of Euro 2024 after the break when he showed astonishing pace to race past Wober but, with the goal at his mercy, he held his head in disbelief after shooting wide.

France were not at their best but, with veteran N'Golo Kante producing a magnificent individual performance after two years away from the international stage, they did enough to get past a determined Austria and set the platform for the key Group D game against old rivals the Netherlands on Friday.

  12. Postpublished at 07:15 British Summer Time 18 June

It will not have been lost on England fans that France - with or without Kylian Mbappe - could face the Three Lions in the semi-finals, should both countries top their groups and make it that far in the competition.

Of course, there are a lot of ifs, buts and maybes in that sentence.

And, if Monday's action has taught us anything, there are no sure things at the Euros...more on Belgium v Slovakia in a moment.

  13. 'It seems quite complicated'published at 07:13 British Summer Time 18 June

    Austria 0-1 France

It is not yet clear when or if Kylian Mbappe will return to action in the Euros.

France face the Netherlands on Friday and their final fixture in Group D is on Tuesday, 25 June, against Poland.

Manager Didier Deschamps' initial reaction was one of caution.

"He's not doing well," said the World Cup-winning coach in his post-match news conference.

"His nose got badly hit. We need to check it out but it seems quite complicated, which is really very unfortunate for us."

And he added: " It's still to be seen and I cannot at this stage give you a precise answer."

  14. Mbappe to remain with France squad after breaking nosepublished at 07:08 British Summer Time 18 June

    Austria 0-1 France

The good news for Kylian Mbappe and France is that the Real Madrid striker has not been ruled out of the competition.

The French Football Federation (FFF) has confirmed that the 25-year-old forward sustained a broken nose after colliding with the shoulder of Austria centre-back Kevin Danso in Monday night's 1-0 victory in Duesseldof.

He has rejoined the squad after undergoing tests in hospital and will "undergo treatment in the coming days, without undergoing surgery immediately".

The FFF added: "A mask will be made so as to allow the number 10 of the French team to consider resuming competition after a period devoted to treatment."
