Rangers captain James Tavernier says he hasn't been able to rewatch the Europa League final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt, almost three years on from the club's Seville heartache.

Tavernier converted the opening penalty in the shootout against the Germans only to collect a runners-up medal minutes later.

And he is using that disappointment to try to secure a quickfire return to Bilbao for next month's showpiece as Rangers face Athletic in the second leg a quarter-final finely poised at 0-0.

"Still never watched a replay of the game," the defender said.

"When I eventually hang up my boots I will maybe look back at it. It really hurts. To get to the final felt once in a lifetime but we've now got a really good chance to get back there.

"It's a beautiful stadium and it's somewhere we want to come back to for the final.

"It's important we play together as a team, that's what got us to the final the last time. We need to limit their chances and keep 11 men on the pitch.

"It's anyone's game. We need to leave the pitch with no regrets and give it our all, which we will do. We want to give the fans a night to remember too."

When asked why he believes his side have a chance of getting back on to one of European football's grandest stages, he pointed to the continental adventure Rangers have been on this season.

"Look at the opposition we've played so far and the games," Tavernier, 33, said.

"We believe we can take on anyone on our day. European competitions have always been good for us. We have great belief in that changing room.

"We will have to always be concentrated, we will have to suffer without the ball and hopefully we can catch them on the counter."

I, for one, will be watching Rangers' match today with interest - it's fun being a neutral supporter. I've followed all their European games so far and hope they can make it through what will be a tough game after a great result last week. They seem to be a different beast in Europe!

As a Rangers supporter, I’m hoping for another miracle run. Realistically though, we could have no British clubs in the semi finals.

The Spanish side arrived in Glasgow as favourites with Rangers under pressure off the back of a record five consecutive defeats at home.

Their cause seemed doomed when Robin Propper was adjudged to have brought down Inaki Williams. After a video assistant referee (VAR) intervention, as last man, his yellow card turned red after just 13 minutes.

Rangers, though, held firm - and survived a number of scares - before substitute Alex Berenguer stepped up to take the most controversial of late penalties, but Kelly diverted the ball over with his leg to the delight of the home crowd.

Is it the biggest night in Ange Postecoglou's time at Tottenham Hotspur? It would be difficult to argue otherwise.

The Europa League remains Spurs' only chance of picking up some silverware this season. There have been some big games for Tottenham this season on their quest for a trophy though...

    • In this season's EFL Cup semi-final they went to Anfield with a 1-0 lead from the home leg but were dismantled 4-0 by Arne Slot's side in the return fixture and failed to register a single shot on target.
    • En-route to that semi-final they beat Manchester United 4-3 in rather dramatic circumstances. With half an hour to go Spurs were 3-0 up, cruising, but two errors from Spurs keeper Fraser Forster opened the door for a United comeback. Son Heung-min seemed to settle nerves by getting a fourth but Jonny Evans got a third for United. In the end Spurs held on to see it out and progress.
    • In the last 16 of the Europa League Spurs were beaten 1-0 away at AZ Alkmaar but managed to turn it around at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a 3-1 win (3-2 on aggregate).

Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca is bracing himself for Manchester United’s ‘best performance of the season’ at Old Trafford tomorrow.

United face Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final second-leg knowing victory is essential if they are to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

In what has been a desperate campaign domestically, United have already lost at home to Crystal Palace, Brighton, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest amongst others. In addition, they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham on penalties at Old Trafford.

Fonseca is not reading too much into those results.

He knows United’s season is hanging in the balance and is expecting a highly motivated opponent.

“I expect Manchester United’s strongest performance of the season,” he said.

“They are a big team and a big club. True, in the Premier League they are not what they were. It has been a bit different but in the Europa League they have put in some good performances and have a lot of individual skills.

“I expect to be playing against the best United there is. It is a decisive moment for Manchester United. They will be super motivated for the match.”

It would be fairly ridiculous if Manchester United qualified for the Champions League. They are nowhere near what should be the required level to be there. Only the low quality of the current Europa League field would ensure their possible participation in the CL.

  12. What else did Amorim say about Onana?published at 15:29 British Summer Time 17 April

Man Utd v Lyon (20:00 BST, 2-2 on agg)

Ruben Amorim was also asked if Manchester United need a new goalkeeper this summer.

He said: "My answer is that we need to improve every position on the field - goalkeeper is the same. We can work with Andre. If our team scores more goals and is more dangerous on the forwards and the strikers, we will defend better, Onana will defend better."

Keeping Onana out any longer would kill his confidence and it is clear Bayindir is a second choice goalkeeper who is carrying his own nerves.

However, I think it is clear Man United need to recruit a new goalkeeper in the summer. Onana is not a bad goalkeeper by any means but his confidence and presence has been eroded over time and to come back from that at a club like Manchester United is very hard, with the levels of pressure and scrutiny.

There is no guarantee a new goalkeeper would not also fall victim to the state of the club, but there is a better chance of someone new succeeding under an Amorim rebuild than Onana, who carries the baggage of a difficult two seasons.

  15. Onana must focus on his job - Maguirepublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 17 April

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Harry Maguire understands exactly what Andre Onana is going through at Manchester United.

His performances have been questioned throughout his time at Old Trafford and he had the captaincy taken off him by Erik ten Hag.

Maguire feels the only way Onana can deal with the scrutiny he will be under during United's crucial Europa League encounter with Lyon tonight is to keep his mind on what is in front of him.

"Andre has proved in the past he is an excellent goalkeeper," said Maguire.

"In every career you have spells when you go up and down, and find yourself a little bit out of form. It is about how you build yourself back in and find that confidence to perform again.

‘At the moment, he is probably feeling everything is going against him, but you take it game by game, ignore it all and focus on your job.

"I always said to myself, ‘tomorrow night is another game of football, go on that pitch and give it absolutely everything’. When you walk off you say to yourself. ‘I’ve left everything out there’."

In his pre-match news conference Ruben Amorim confirmed goalkeeper Andre Onana will start against Lyon at Old Trafford. Amorim left him out of the squad for Sunday's trip to Newcastle.

Amorim said: "As a coach and former player first of all I try to do things that can help a player in this situation.

"We speak about managing players physically but we also have to manage them also mentally.

"We had one weekend where I felt it was better for Andre Onana not to play and a good thing for Altay [Bayindir] to play.

    "He [Onana] will play tomorrow."

Manchester United United went behind after 25 minutes when under-pressure Andre Onana failed to get a strong enough hand to Thiago Almada's wide free-kick.

In the final seconds of the first half Leny Yoro equalised with his first goal for United by reacting quickly to Manuel Ugarte's volley and diverting the ball into the bottom corner.

The visitors thought they had won late on when substitute Joshua Zirkzee headed home Bruno Fernandes' looping cross in the 88th minute.

But, with the last play before the final whistle, Onana spilled Georges Mikautadze's shot and Rayan Cherki tapped in on the rebound.

In footballing terms, you'd have to say Tottenham need it more. If it wasn't for the financial benefits, I think a season out of Europe for United would do them good, we've seen the difference between Newcastle last season (in Europe) and this season (out of Europe). In terms of who I think will win it overall, I'm going to go with Man United. They've just got a nack of salvaging really bad seasons, and I think they're going to do it again.

  20. Europa win won't mask disappointing season - Maguirepublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 17 April

Man Utd v Lyon (20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire accepts this season will still be one of disappointment even if his side go on to win the Europa League.

Victory in the tournament is now United's only route back into the Champions League and, in all likelihood, any kind of European football.

    Financially, the difference is huge.

But Maguire accepts that alone will not make up for what could turn out to be United's worst league campaign since they were relegated in 1973-74.

“It's been a disappointing season, there's no doubt about it," he said.

"From the start we've been far too inconsistent.

“Performances have picked up of late. However I think there are key aspects in games where us players have got to take more responsibility and change them in our favour.

“There have been a lot of games that have been 50-50 and we've ended up on the bad end of a result and that's something we do need to work on as a team, as a group of players.

"If we do win the Europa League, it's still going to be a disappointing season for us players, but winning that would be a big bonus."
