For Man Utd and Tottenham, it would be unfair to say which club needs the Europa League the most. For both clubs, it is a last ditch attempt to salvage an awful season. Without this, there will be a lack of funds for both teams and will make any success next season even harder. May the best club win!

Postecoglou couldn't care about Spurs job speculation

During his pre-match news conference Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was asked about his position as the club's head coach.

"I don't define my career or me as a person by what people think of me. I never have and never will," he said.

"If you don't think I'm a good coach today then you are not going to think I'm a good coach tomorrow. Even if we win, mate, one game is not going to make a difference to that.

"If people think us winning tomorrow then all of a sudden I'm a better manager than what I am today, or losing tomorrow somehow makes me a worse manager, that is their burden, not mine."

Postecoglou added: "I couldn't care less, mate. I really couldn't care less. There's no burden on me, there is no anxiety on me.

"What I'm sitting here doing is thinking 'we've got a great opportunity to get to the final four of a major tournament'. Mate, I'm not going to let that slip by without fighting tooth and nail for it irrespective of what may come the day after."

Stephen Kelly is not the only pundit or journalist questioning Ange Postecoglou's position as Tottenham manager if he fails to guide them to the Europa League trophy.

But the Australian says that he "doesn't care" what people think about his future...

  4. 'Make or break for Ange'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 17 April

Eintracht Frankfurt v Tottenham (20:00 BST, 1-1 agg)

    Stephen Kelly
Former Tottenham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I've covered Tottenham's last three games. I did the Frankfurt game on Thursday and I was like 'this is the best I've seen them'.

Everybody's back fit, they played well in the second half and looked like they could've and should've won the game.

Then I was at Wolves at the weekend and was like 'oh no, back to Tottenham again'. It was awful, really poor, the mistakes they made.

To think that they have to raise it again for a game away to Frankfurt who are no slouches, third in the Bundesliga, a very good side with attacking players that can cause problems and are causing teams problems all over Europe

I don't know where to go with this - how they are going to finish - but it is make or break I think for Ange Postecoglou with the Europa League.

Former Tottenham defender Stephen Kelly is under no doubt which of the three British managers is under the most pressure.

Spurs' Ange Postecoglou has been in his position the longest, coming to the end of his second season in charge.

Ruben Amorim and Barry Ferguson may be feeling the heat as well, but Kelly believes the Europa League is "make or break" for Postecoglou...

  7. Supercomputer predicts: Europa League winnerpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 17 April

As mentioned, the British contingent are not favourite to lift the Europa League, that honour falls to Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, which is hosting the final on 21 May.

Here are the chances of winning the tournament, predicted by the Opta supercomputer, for each of the quarter-finalists:

    1. Athletic Bilbao - 25.1%
    2. Manchester United - 17.9%
    3. Eintracht Frankfurt - 13.9%
    4. Tottenham Hotspur - 13.6%
    5. Bodo/Glimt - 11.6%
    6. Lyon - 9.9%
    7. Lazio - 5.9%
    8. Rangers - 2.2%

    Europa League

A European trophy should be carrot enough for all the remaining eight sides left in the Europa League.

But if any extra motivation were needed, then the prize of Champions League qualification for the winners should suffice.

All three British sides left in the competition - Rangers, Manchester United and Tottenham - have endured domestic campaigns that have fallen below the standards each club expects.

All three managers - Rangers' Barry Ferguson, United's Ruben Amorim and Spurs' Ange Postecoglou - are under pressure to succeed, for largely the same reasons.

Neither club is favourite to lift the trophy, but that is most certainly the aim for each.

Stick with us as we look at the circumstances at each club and assess which side most needs Europa League glory.

Talk of European glory doesn't end with the Champions League though.

We are now turning our attention to a massive night in the Europa League for Manchester United, Tottenham and Rangers.

Chelsea are also in action tonight and they have one foot in the Conference League semi-finals after a 3-0 win at Legia Warsaw in the first leg.

What really impressed me with Arsenal last night was that individual players just kept going, despite mistakes. Saka fluffed his penalty but kept going until he got his goal (which ironically was a chipped finish). Saliba made the mistake for the Madrid goal but he kept on putting in such a shift, didn’t allow his head to drop and put in some crucial blocks. Absolutely Arsenal can go all the way.

  12. Could this be the year Arsenal end their wait for a trophy?published at 13:58 British Summer Time 17 April

The question is - for Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta - could this be the year that they end their wait for a major trophy?

    You know the drill:

    • Click thumbs up for yes
    • Thumbs down for no...
  13. Arteta's near-missespublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 17 April

    Mikel ArtetaImage source, Getty Images

Despite all of the optimism generated by Arsenal's deserved win over Real Madrid, that fact remains that Mikel Arteta has only managed to land one major trophy since taking over as Gunners boss in 2019.

The 2019-20 FA Cup came in his first season with the club.

Since then, he has managed to guide Arsenal to two FA Community Shield wins - in 2020 and then again in 2023 - but the big ones have alluded him.

There have been a few near-misses though, including two (soon to be three) second-place finishes in the Premier League:

    • Premier League runner-up (2023 & 2024)
    • Champions League quarter-final (2024)
    • Europa League semi-final (2021)
    • Europa League last-16 (2023)
    • EFL Cup semi-final (2022 & 2025)
    • EFL Cup quarter-final (2021)

Real Madrid 1-2 Arsenal (agg 1-5)

    David Seaman
Former Arsenal goalkeeper on BB Radio 5 Live

With all the hype before, to go to the Bernabeu and do that after even missing a penalty, it was a massive statement from the lads. I was so proud.

The semi-finals will be difficult, I feel like it'll be harder than Real Madrid. PSG are a very organised team, we saw that against Liverpool and we even saw bits against Aston Villa. But they [Villa] showed that it can be done.

There is a game plan Mikel Arteta can look back at for PSG and see what we did and what we were good at.

I'm so looking forward to it, but before that let's remember and enjoy Real Madrid because that was so good.

Arsenal have only won two European trophies - the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1970 and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1994.

The Gunners actually beat Paris St-Germain en route to the Cup Winners' Cup final triumph more than 30 years ago.

A certain David Seaman helped get that side over the line, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Parma in the final in Copenhagen...

  16. Champions League honours - past glories of final fourpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 17 April

History is not in Arsenal's favour, when comparing their honours with any potential final opponents, should they make it past Paris St-Germain.

This is how many Champions Leagues or European Cups this year’s final four have won.

    • Arsenal - 0
    • Paris St. Germain - 0
    • Inter Milan - 3 (1963-64, 1964-65, 2009-10)
    • Barcelona - 5 (1991-92, 2005-6, 2008-9, 2010-11, 2014-15)

Arsenal have a defensive structure that is very difficult to beat, and one of the best players around in Bukayo Saka. That's a combination that will get you to a final. Declan Rice as well, perhaps the best midfielder in Europe alongside Pedri. They do have everything that is required to win it.

Inter Milan are a little bit lucky, Bayern Munich had more chances and any other day it could have gone their way.

PSG are the most solid team with more variation. Perhaps they don't defend very well in their box, but when they pressure you it's so difficult to beat them. They are, for me, the better side.

Barcelona have Lamine Yamal. They defend very high which makes life difficult.

It's very intriguing. For me PSG are the favourites, Arsenal and Barcelona have the same chance, then Inter Milan fourth.

Midfielder Thomas Partey was namechecked by Matthew Upson there.

Sadly, the Ghana international will miss the first leg of the Gunners' Champions League semi-final against Paris St-Germain.

He was booked in the closing stages of the second-leg quarter-final victory at Real Madrid, which triggered a one-match suspension.

On BBC Radio 5 Live, Upson called it "such a silly yellow card".
