  4. Could timing be the difference between Reijnders & Cherki signings?published at 19:53 British Summer Time 10 June

    Craig Nelson
    BBC Sport reporter

The telling question for Tijjani Reijnders is whether Manchester City feel they need him in their squad for the Club World Cup.

Remember, those squads have to be submitted tonight.

If City feel they have enough cover in central midfield areas, then potentially this deal does not need to be signed, sealed and delivered tonight.

The consensus is that Rayan Cherki will fill the sizeable hole left by the departure of Kevin de Bruyne, so his signing was needed in time to make the Club World Cup squad.

  5. Recap - Reijnders situationpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 10 June

Manchester City have had a busy day, confirming the signings of goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and Rayan Cherki.

One still to be confirmed, however, is Tijjani Reijnders.

The midfielder is expected to join City from Italian side AC Milan but his signing is yet to be confirmed.

That's not to say the deal hasn't been completed and it could still be announced later tonight or tomorrow.

There were reports that the midfielder completed a medical and agreed personal terms last weekend, so it's likely a matter of when rather than if he is confirmed.

Rayan Cherki has everything Pep is looking for. His immense ability to dribble past opposition players at ease gives him that edge ahead of Foden for the number 10 role, I can't wait to watch him play for City.

  7. How will City use Cherki?published at 19:39 British Summer Time 10 June

Rayan Cherki could prove to be Manchester City's replacement for Kevin de Bruyne.

With Tijani Reijnders - also expected to join City but no deal yet completed - capable of playing anywhere in midfield, Cherki will likely play in an advanced role just behind Erling Haaland.

Guardiola traditionally prefers his midfielders to keep the ball and be patient rather than play in a direct, transitional style. However, he now has a De Bruyne-shaped hole to fill following the Belgian's departure.

Cherki could also be deployed on the right wing, with wide players Jeremy Doku and Savinho struggling for consistency last season and Jack Grealish open to leaving the club.

There seems to be an awful lot of hype around Cherki that simply isn't matched by his price tag. You never know for certain how young players will turn out of course, but it strikes me that somebody as good as the media hype suggests should cost a lot more than £30m.

  9. What have Cherki's team-mates said?published at 19:27 British Summer Time 10 June

Lyon captain Alexandre Lacazette described Rayan Cherki as "special".

The former Arsenal striker added: "This season, he has managed to raise his level. I would put [Mesut] Ozil in a different category but, with time, Rayan can get close to him."

Speaking to BBC Sport in April about him, Lyon's former Arsenal player Ainsley Maitland-Niles said: "He is the best natural talent I've ever seen. An absolute master, a wizard with the ball.

"He is taking chances, assists and dragging us up the pitch by taking people on and nutmegging them - he is a genius."

Only deals where new players are registered by the 19:00 BST deadline tonight, with the full paperwork submitted by 21:00 BST, can be concluded.

Any other deals agreed between now and 15 June cannot be completed until the next transfer window opens on 16 June.

  11. What type of player is Rayan Cherki?published at 19:21 British Summer Time 10 June

    CherkiImage source, Getty Images

Rayan Cherki can play either on the right wing or in midfield, but he prefers a number 10 role behind the striker.

He is known for his technical ability, particularly his dribbling and two-footedness - France legend Thierry Henry has previously said he has "never seen a player in history who dribbles as quickly as him".

Cherki has just enjoyed a break-out campaign in Ligue 1, providing 11 assists, 22 big chances - the most in the league - 13 through-balls and 48 successful dribbles.

A return of 12 goals in all competitions is by far the best of his short career, while his work off the ball and overall understanding of the game has come on massively in recent seasons.

New Manchester City man Rayan Cherki has posted a heartfelt message to former club Lyon on his social media accounts.

In a shortened version, he said:

"Thousands of emotions, hundreds of memories, and an indelible mark on my heart. No speech could truly convey everything that goes through my mind as I leave this jersey and this crest bearing the lion that I wore with such pride for almost 15 years.

"Thank you to the supporters for their unwavering support and affection, in good times and bad. I also thank everyone who supported me, off the field, in achieving my goals.

"To all, I have tried to live up to what you have given me. Far from the eyes but close to the heart, I hope to continue to make you proud and to worthily represent the 'Lyonnais DNA.'"
