Manchester United in the SAF years would constantly go and take the best player from other Premier League clubs. It became a tried and tested method for them. Rooney, Carrick, Berbatov, Van Persie, Keane, Cole, Yorke, Van der Sar, just to name a few, and there are many more. If United are returning to that transfer strategy (as it appears they are with Cunha and Mbeumo), then that should be a worry for other teams and fans, whether they want to admit it or not.

"He reads the game very well, without being the fastest midfielder - he has the puzzle of the team in his head."

Balague added that while Zubimendi, 26, is "more up to driving with the ball and even getting into the box," his main job is to help with buil up.

"Sometimes going at the level of the centre-backs, make the game fluid, find the man with space, push the team forward, and do the same when it is the matter of applying pressure.

"He is very clever when it comes to decide when to go or when not to go. A team player, a quiet leader. A key clog in the machine."

My (semi) realistic signing would be Jack Grealish, his creativity and running with the ball is something Everton have sorely lacked. My dream signing would be any 20 goal a season striker who stays fit. We've never replaced Lukaku and it's obvious how much we miss that goal threat.

If Mo Salah moved on this summer, I’d have liked us to go for a player who knew the league well and who could step into the Champions League from the get-go. Jared Bowen was my first choice but Mbeumo's got to be a close second. If United get him, then things will definitely change at Old Trafford. Players like Anthony, Garnacho, Sancho and even Rashford in the end just don’t have the character to play for United and say ‘This is my shirt’. Good luck Mbeumo. Get Wissa too, and you’re laughing. But I hope he ends up at Anfield.

Re: Realistic/dream targets. As a Villa fan, bit hard to gauge this summer as the big deals will likely depend on outgoings. But a realistic signing for me would be Jaka Bijol, who did great at the last Euros and had a quality season with Udinese after that. And a dream target, Amad Diallo, for the likely-departing Leon Bailey, would be a great move. Don't see him leaving Manchester United this summer though.

Jaka Bijol, 26, plays as a centre-back for Italian side Udinese in Serie A but can also operate as a defensive midfielder.

He started his career at Rudar Velenje before moving to CSKA Moscow in 2018. A loan move to Hannover 96 followed before returning to CSKA and agreeing on a transfer to Udinese.

This season he has made 34 appearances for the Serie A side.

We teased you with this earlier, before that story broke on Kieran Tierney.

Yesterday Manchester City completed the signing of Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, but they are hoping to wrap up two more deals in time for the Fifa Club World Cup.

Pep Guardiola is hoping to add two midfielders to his squad, with City in talks with AC Milan and Lyon over midfielders Tijani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki respectively.

Earlier today, Fabrizio Romano reported that City and Lyon have agreed a 36m euros (£30.5m) fixed fee, with 6m euros (£5m) add-ons and a 15% sell-on clause.

Reijnders has reportedly signed his contract before completing a £46.3m move from Milan.

  18. Tierney at Arsenalpublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 10 June

    Arsenal

Kieran Tierney joined Arsenal from Celtic in 2019 and went on to make 144 appearances for the club across the back line.

He was a first team fixture across his first few seasons at Emirates Stadium, winning the FA Cup with the Gunners in 2020.

However injuries and the emergence of players like Myles Lewis-Skelly saw Tierney lose his spot in the starting XI, and he spent time on loan at Spanish side Real Sociedad in 2023-24.

Tierney missed the start of the 2024-25 campaign with a hamstring problem, and though he came back into the first team squad under Mikel Arteta he was released when his contract expired this summer.

New Celtic signing Kieran Tierney, speaking to the club website: “I spoke with the manager, and obviously I had worked with him before and I’ve always kept in touch with him. He’s one of the best so I’m so lucky and grateful that he’s given me the chance to come back again.

“When you move away from home, you grow up, you learn different things. I was in Spain for a year, learning a different language and playing in a different league, so I’m definitely a different person.

“My ambition is just for Celtic to be as successful as possible, retain our place at the top and continue to win trophies and do well for Celtic.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers on Tierney: “Kieran has always had Celtic in his blood and he is excited to be coming back to the place he loves.

“He is someone who has given so much to Celtic already and I know he is so motivated and hungry to help the club bring more and more success to our fans.

“We are so pleased to bring such an elite player back to the club and I look forward to working with him again and the rest of the squad, as we face the many challenges ahead at home and in Europe.”
