Nemanja Matic on Andre Onana: 'One of the worst keepers in Man Utd history'

Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic added a bit of spice to the build-up for their Europa League tie at home to his former club Manchester United by labelling Andre Onana as "one of the worst goalkeepers in the club's history".

He had been asked about Onana's comments from earlier this week that United were "way better" than French club Lyon as the two sides prepare to meet in the first leg of their quarter-final in France.

Truth be told, Tottenham Hotspur have had a dismal season.

Their record in Europe however has been ok, especially on home soil.

Spurs have played five games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in this year's Europa League and are unbeaten in all of them.

They have a record of four wins and one draw going into this evening's game with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Compare that with the two victories, two defeats and one draw that they have recorded away from home and it's likely that Ange Postecoglou's side will need to get a positive result this evening to give themselves a chance of progressing beyond this stage of the competition.

If Spurs do manage to pull off a miracle and win the Europa League you wonder if that will change the whole atmosphere around Ange and the players. They have played like there is a weight on their shoulders and Ange’s unwillingness to change the style to suit the players available hasn’t helped. Maybe a flukey cup run and a trophy would change all that and we would see a completely different Tottenham next year.

Ange Postecoglou joked in his press conference in the build-up to Spurs' first leg of their Europa quarter-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt that even if he wins a trophy he is "gone" at the end of the season.

We say joked, but the Australian certainly wasn't laughing.

He is aware that even ending that drought with a European triumph may not be enough to convince some observers he is the right person to manage the club beyond this season due to poor performances in the Premier League.

"I just think you can't win the argument of convincing people", he said. "Even if we win [the Europa League], I am gone anyway. That's just the general sentiment of the people.

"If you try to use that as a motivation, you are not going to win anyway. It's got to be something more in it for us.

"For us, what's most important is that we have been through a tough time but we are still in a position to make an impact."

Winning the Europa League would provide a route into next season's Champions League for the winners.

Right, thanks so much for your messages. We are getting plenty in on the plights of Manchester United, Tottenham and Rangers.

One thing you all seem to share is a complete confusion about what to expect from your team tonight, but the blind hope that it might be your year in the Europa League.

Well, definitely maybe, at least, if we can steal that phrase...

I really have no idea what Gers team will show up tonight. I wouldn’t bet on us beating Athletic Club but also if we get horsed I wouldn’t be surprised.

Rangers interim boss Barry Ferguson will have a juggling job on his hands as the Scottish side look to cope without two of their suspended players for the visit of Athletic Club.

Athletic are no easy opponents having finished second during the league phase, level on points with table toppers Lazio.

And Ferguson will be without centre-back John Souttar and midfielder Mohamed Diomande through suspension, with both missing out due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

"We have worked hard over the last couple of days on how we are going to set up in terms of stopping Athletic, but we are at home, and we have to dictate the game," Ferguson said.

“We are going to give it everything to get a good result to take it over there next Thursday."

Neraysho Kasanwirjo will also be unavailable because of a long-term knee injury.

Can't help but fear for the British teams tonight, well, fear for United, couldn't actually care less about the other two.. Man United have been a bit of a tournament team the last couple of years though so you never know.

Manchester United could be without defender Matthijs de Ligt for their Europa League quarter-final first leg contest against Lyon tonight.

The Netherlands international has a foot problem that he picked up at Nottingham Forest and Ruben Amorim, speaking ahead of the tie, said he was not sure when De Light would return to action.

Toby Collyer is also unavailable for the Red Devils with a leg issue and could remain on the sidelines for a few weeks.

But midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has been out since 7 February, could return to the squad after given the all-clear as he looks to find a place back in the United starting line-up.

Amorim will also be without long-term absentees Lisandro Martinez, Amad Diallo, Ayden Heaven and Jonny Evans for the European tie, which will see Nemanja Matic play against his former club in Lyon colours.

It's been a difficult season for Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

But at least he now has most of his players back to fitness as they look to tackle the business end of their Europa League campaign.

"Everyone is good from the weekend from a physical standpoint," said the Spurs boss ahead of tonight's game.

"That's a good place to be for us, there haven't been that many occasions where that's happened this year, so from that point of view, it's good."

Richarlison returned to the bench against Southampton on Sunday, further widening the pool of players Postecoglou has at his disposal.

Dejan Kulusevski and Kevin Danso are also "a couple of weeks away" from returning while Radu Dragusin is the only long-term absentee.

Massive night for Spurs and especially Ange. A comfortable win and the pressure must lift from his shoulders a bit. I think with the fickle Spurs fans, even if we win Europa and qualify for the Champs League, a number will still want him out. Give him a full season with a full squad and then we can judge him.

  14. What is the route through to the Europa League final?published at 14:10 British Summer Time 10 April

The draw for the Europa League is now set, with a potential route through to the final in Bilbao now clear for all eight sides in the quarter-finals.

Should the Opta supercomputer projections prove wrong, there is the prospect of an all-British final with Tottenham in the top half of the draw and both Rangers and Manchester United - who could meet in the last four - in the bottom half.

    Europa League quarter-finals

    • Tottenham (England) v Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany)
    • Bodo Glimt (Norway) v Lazio (Italy)
    • Rangers (Scotland) v Athletic Club (Spain)
    • Lyon (France) v Manchester United (England)

  15. Who are the favourites to win the Europa League?published at 14:04 British Summer Time 10 April

Tottenham, Manchester United and Rangers are clearly in the Europa League to win it - but Opta's supercomputer does not rate their chances too highly.

It has simulated the remainder of the Europa League knockout stage 10,000 times to analyse each side’s chances as well as projecting a potential winner.

And it's not good reading for the three British sides.

Tottenham are only third favourites to win the trophy at 17.2% - trailing Athletic Club (24%) and Lazio (20.1%).

Ruben Amorim's Manchester United, meanwhile, are fourth with only a 15% chance of lifting the title.

Rangers, meanwhile, finished last in the simulations with them only having a paltry 1.8% chance of going all the way.

  17. What's in store in Europa League?published at 13:49 British Summer Time 10 April

Only one point separates Manchester United and Tottenham as they sit 13th and 14th in the Premier League table.

Though they have nothing left to play for domestically this season, Ruben Amorim and Ange Postecoglou will be hoping to finish disappointing campaigns for their teams on a positive note.

Going all the way in the Europa League will not only secure them a much-needed trophy but also a place in next season's Champions League.

But plenty of hurdles await them on the course starting with the quarter-final first legs tonight as United travel to face Lyon and Spurs host Bundesliga's Eintracht Frankfurt.

Rangers are also in the hunt for European glory as they welcome Spain's Athletic Club to Ibrox.

That's just about the last of the Champions League chatter for one day.

About time we moved on to tonight's games, don't you think?

Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Rangers are in Europa League action while Chelsea travel to Legia Warsaw in the Conference League.

You can keep your chatter on whether or not you want to see British clubs doing well in Europe because the same applies here.

I'm going to hand over to Craig now while I go and dip my head into a bucket of ice cold water. Cheers hayfever.

Anyway, tonight's games, cool, let's go.

As an Arsenal fan, I don't see us winning the champions league. We have a real lack of European pedigree, so I don't see why we can't push for it next year. But I think Gabriel being out for the season, and no recognised striker means we probably won't go all the way.

If the Opta supercomputer predictions are anything to go by, we will be treated to two mouth-watering heavyweight clashes in the semi-finals of this season's Champions League.

Arsenal, if they finish the job in Santiago Bernabeu next week, will meet Paris St-Germain, who currently lead Aston Villa 3-1.

Meanwhile, the other semi-final contest could see Barcelona, who have a four-goal lead to protect in the return leg against Borussia Dortmund, take on Inter Milan, who posted a 2-1 win at Bayern Munich in the first leg.

The semi-final ties are to be played on 29/30 April and 6/7 May.

    Possible Champions League semi-final line-ups:

    • Arsenal v Paris St-Germain
    • Barcelona v Inter Milan
