    PSV Eindhoven 0-0 Liverpool

Jayden Danns - aged 19 years and 13 days - is the youngest player to make his first start for Liverpool in a European Cup/Champions League game. He beats Martin Kelly's record (19 years 176 days) when his first start came again Lyon in October 2009.

  2. Postpublished at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Man City 0-0 Club Brugge

It's now or never for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola said they would really like an early goal here.

But it's often not been goals that have been a problem for his side but protecting a lead.

  3. 'Villa won't want to lose either striker'published at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Aston Villa 0-0 Celtic

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

If you are a Villa fan you don't want either to be sold. Villa are a team who have been moving in a particular direction under Unai Emery.

They won't want to lose Watkins or Duran.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Celtic

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic and Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Aston Villa have had a pretty good campaign so far and in some respects the Scotland v England thing will add an extra side to this fixture too.

Man City v Club Brugge (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium

As usual, the Champions League anthem was booed by a section of the home support, followed by a chant of 'City, City'.

These fans have a long standing grudge against UEFA that goes back much further than the two-year ban, overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, for breaching financial rules in February 2020.

  7. Big build up at Man Citypublished at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Man City 0-0 Club Brugge

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Etihad Stadium

Manchester City are giving it the big build-up for this must-win Champions League game against Club Brugge.

Pyrotechnics. Light show. Dramatic team announcements.

What City and their fans need most is a performance that is several levels above the desperate effort in defeat away to Paris St.Germain seven days ago.

Various light shows, pyrotechnics, team announcements and Tifos complete.

We're moments away from finding out who will be in the top eight, who faces who in the play-offs, and who will be out of Europe altogether.

You'll never get an undersold Celtic away end! Their fans have traveled south in numbers.

Meanwhile, Villa fans are in full voice ahead of kick-off. We've been promised a spectacular Tifo as the teams walk out. Any guesses as to what it will be?

  12. The miracle of Brestpublished at 19:56 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Brest v Real Madrid (20:00 GMT)

On paper, could this be more of a mismatch? Perhaps not as Brest look to secure their passage to their automatic qualification to the knockout rounds for the first time but they have to come up against defending champions Real Madrid.

The French side have two wins and a draw at home in Europe, can they make it four unbeaten?

This was the scene awaiting Cody Gakpo when he stepped off the Liverpool team coach at the Philips Stadium.

Liverpool are through to the last 16 whatever the result tonight but it's a big occasion for Gakpo, 25, who was born in Eindhoven and became a fans' favourite at PSV before moving to Merseyside two years ago.

A big night too for the likes of Jayden Danns and 20-year-old midfielder James McConnell.

Danns, 19, is making his first senior start while Liverpool's bench includes 17-year-old Trey Nyoni.

  15. 'New format has opened up competition'published at 19:54 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

    Joe Hart
Former Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is their [UEFA's] dream what is going on tonight. Everything on the line, someone like Man City are on the edge of being eliminated.

When they set it up the idea was that teams like this would be on the edge of the top eight, but for them to be potentially going out of the competition brings that interest for the next round, the playoff.

In the four-team format, two or three games in you kind of knew where you stood. But this year there have been so many ways of getting further if you are not that team that is necessarily expected to go on and win it or reach the semi-finals. [The new format] has opened it up.

  16. 'Thank you for your concern'published at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Man City v Club Brugge (20:00 GMT)

Pep Guardiola would not be drawn in his press conference on whether or not he would be embarrassed if his side failed to progress to the next phase.

"Ask me the question after," he said. "Thank you for your concern but after the game I will answer you."

He had already said: "I think we will do it."

There are blue seats dotted around the stadium but not many in the away section.

The Club Brugge fans are in early and in good voice.

They have travelled to England in the knowledge their team could lose tonight and still make it to the play-offs.

It has been an excellent campaign, so far, for the Belgian side.

  18. Man City chances of progressionpublished at 19:51 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January

Man City v Club Brugge (20:00 GMT)

Opta have given Manchester City a 63.8% chance of beating Club Brugge and making the play-off round.

However, the chances of reaching the last 16 falls to 41.1%.

Club Brugge have won three of their Champions League games so far this season, including a home win against Aston Villa.

They also held Juventus to a goalless draw in their last European outing but their only away win in the competition was at Sturm Graz on 2 October.

The Belgians are, however, in good form having not lost a game in any competition since 22 October.

They are managed by Nicky Hayen, who just three years ago had a spell as manager of Welsh semi-professional side Haverfordwest County.

As a team in desperate need of a striker I’m curious as to why Arsenal are targeting the man at the top of the list of missed big chances in the league.
