  2. Will Arsenal struggle without Saka?published at 14:59 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2024

The only Premier League game Bukayo Saka has missed this season was the 2-0 loss at Bournemouth in October, again because of a hamstring injury.

It is one of only two league defeats for the Gunners so far this campaign.

Arsenal fans complaining about Saka's minutes are the same ones who criticise Arteta for fielding a weakened side against Palace in midweek. Liverpool don't rest Salah, if you want trophies you play your best players.

    Nottingham Forest

Nuno Espirito Santo was asked about Nottingham Forest's plans in the January transfer window and, although he didn't share too much, he admitted that there are plans to be active:

"Honestly, we have two games to go [before the window opens].

"This is what we're focussed on. Of course there is work to be done but in the right moment we will do it.

"But now the focus is on Spurs and how well we compete again."

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo on his and his players' confidence after moving up to fourth in the Premier League:

"I'm always confident. Since the start of last season I've always been confident that good work, dedication and commitment can achieve good results.

"I'm very proud of the players with the way they're working every day and staying humble - and recognising that we have a lot of things to improve and a long way to go."

Anyone who actually watches/analyses Arteta can see there aren't a great deal of players he trusts more than Saka. That's the issue.... as well as Saka playing virtually every match for England; even needed to cover on the left last summer, remember?!

  9. Saka's increasingly influential for Gunnerspublished at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2024

Bukayo Saka has been an increasingly important goalscorer for Arsenal over the last few seasons, since making his debut in 2019.

He has scored 12, 15 and 20 goals in all competitions for Arsenal in the past three seasons, which represents 16%, 15% and 18% of Arsenal's total goals that campaign.

He has scored nine goals so far this season (more than 16% of Arsenal's total), missing just two of of the Gunners' 26 matches - because of a hamstring injury. They were the Gunners' 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth in the Premier League and their 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

They also score more goals and concede fewer on average when he is in the team, though the win percentage is similar - 57.2% when he plays compared to 56.2% when he doesn't.

Surely Saka's injury is a green light to go for Williams at Bilbao? If not, a lack of ambition from Arteta and Co.

  11. Nuno on Forest team news - 'We are assessing'published at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2024

Nottingham Forest v Tottenham (Thu, 15:00 GMT)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo has held his news conference and, although he didn't reveal who, he says some players have 'knocks' after Saturday's win at Brentford:

"It was a very tough game. We came in today, with players doing recovery with knocks.

"We are still assessing. I think we still have time to make some decisions."

A reminder that Nottingham Forest have longer-term absentees with Ibrahim Sangare and Danilo out until next year.

  12. Hope for Arsenal fans?published at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2024

Arsenal fans will obviously be concerned about the length of Bukayo Saka's injury absence, but they can take heart from another Premier League player who suffered a similar injury.

In January, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said Mohamed Salah had suffered a "proper tear in his hamstring" playing for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

He sustained the injury on 18 January, but was back playing for Liverpool just a month later on 17 February.

Gutted for Saka. He’s been amazing for us past few seasons, but we have the players to cope and also with the youngsters coming through I think we’ll still be pushing for honours.

  14. How many games has Saka played recently?published at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2024

Bukayo Saka had already suffered two minor hamstring injuries this season, yet has only missed two games for Arsenal.

They both came after the winger's first hamstring injury while playing for England in October.

The 23-year-old also went off injured against Chelsea in November, ruling him out for England during the last international break, but was able to start in the Gunners' next game against Nottingham Forest on 23 November.

Since the international break, Saka has started eight of Arsenal's game, playing 90 minutes in five of them.

Apart from his early withdrawal at Palace, he has also been taken off on 74 and 83 minutes, and came on for 20 minutes in the Carabao Cup win at Preston.

Shame for Saka, but I put this down more to Arteta. It was his decision for Saka (and Rice) to play virtually every game for the past 2/3 seasons. He likes to play the same team week in, week out, but he has a squad for a reason. He should be managing the resources and squad better. And if the squad is thin (which he is now complaining about) him and Arsenal should have started to rectify this much earlier.

    Prav, London

No sympathy for Arteta. He talks about amount of games Saka plays but he forces him to stay on and play game after game even when he rotates others. He could have managed Saka's minutes so much better.

  16. Saka was 'gutted' - Artetapublished at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2024

Arsenal v Ipswich (Fri, 20:15 GMT)

    Arsenal

Finally, from Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, on how Saka responded to the news: "He was gutted.

"You can tell he's not been injured [seriously before] because he was really emotional, he was really down. We need to lift him up because he's part of what we do. It's part of his job, and he will be fine, but he's going to need a few days.

"He's going to immediately realise that he's so important in that dressing room. His energy level, his body language, the way he communicates with the rest of the team, because it's the only way at the moment that he can help, so he better do that well."

Mikel Arteta on whether Gabriel Martinelli can fill Saka's void, as he moved over to the right wing after Saka was injured at Crystal Palace: "Yeah, that's the first one we went through, especially because he's played there before.

"He played the last match there against Everton and the last match of the season. He did really well. He did really well the other day, he scored a goal and created an assist and is a good option to have."

On other players who could play on the right wing: "Gabby [Jesus] has played there. Ethan [Nwaneri] has played there, Leo [Trossard] can play there in relation to how that unit moves. Kai [Havertz] can play there, asking him different things.

"We will see, try different things and ask how they feel about it."

  18. How important has Saka been for Arsenal this season?published at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2024

There's no-one more important to Arsenal than Bukayo Saka, right?

He's got 15 goal involvements in the Premier League already - that's from five goals and 10 assists.

Kai Havertz is the closest player to Saka with eight goal involvements from his six goals and two assists. But that's the potential problem for Arsenal, Saka is key in creating goal-scoring chances.

With Saka on 10 assists, Declan Rice is the next player on Arsenal's assist list with three, then Havertz and three other players with two.

Remarkably, 40% of Arsenal's Premier League assists this season have come from Saka.

Mikel Arteta was asked whether Saka has torn his muscle, rather than strained it. Arteta responded with a simple, "yes".

Have to say, it did look worrying when Saka left Selhurst Park using crutches.

  20. 'It's probably an accumulation of a number of seasons'published at 13:38 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2024

Arsenal v Ipswich (Fri, 20:15 GMT)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on whether Saka's injury is a result of playing too much:

"It's probably an accumulation of a number of seasons. Bukayo and Declan [Rice], they've played over 130 games in two seasons so what's going to happen in the second one, the third one, the fourth one? If that continues the same way, it's probably unsustainable.

"And we have to find ways to physically turn them into monsters. That they can cope with anything. The fact that you play and recover is not a good pattern because you don't train. And the body needs to train. You start to lose a lot of factors in the physical aspect that's key to performance.

"That's a challenge which, OK, we're trying to find ways to do it."
