Another busy and manic day of EFL madness comes to an end.

Birmingham and Wycombe have got themselves some daylight at the top of League One while the runaway train that is Walsall just keeps on rolling in League Two.

It's looking grim for Burton in particular at the bottom of the third tier while Carlisle's busy week in the transfer window failed to produce points with their home defeat by Bradford leaving them seven points short of safety in League Two.

You can catch up with all the day's action on our dedicated pages here and we're back tomorrow with Leeds against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship (kick-off 12:00 GMT).

There was no movement for League Two's bottom two sides today with both Carlisle and Morecambe both tasting defeat.

Harrogate Town's win last night and Swindon Town's victory today see them move up to 19th and 18th respectively, while Gillingham's 1-0 defeat to Doncaster means they slip down to 16th.

There was a big victory for Colchester United who won 1-0 away at Bromley to move up to 15th.

  3. Walsall flying high as top six all winpublished at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January

Leaders Walsall continued their fine form with a club record ninth league win in a row to maintain their 12-point lead over second placed Crewe who picked up a victory over Morecambe.

The chasing pack of Doncaster, Notts County, AFC Wimbledon and Port Vale also won to ensure that every side in the current top six picked up three points today.

Defeat for Salford City against Fleetwood saw them drop from third to seventh in the table, and Bradford moved to within one point after a win at Carlisle.

Burton Albion are now 11 points from safety as they could only draw 1-1 at fellow strugglers Crawley while Cambridge United twice led at Bolton but had to settle for a 2-2 draw after conceding a 90th-minute leveller.

Shrewsbury beat Wrexham on Thursday to give themselves hope.

Northampton's 1-0 home loss to Lincoln drops them to 20th place but Bristol Rovers have moved seven points clear of trouble with a 3-1 win over play-off hopefuls Barnsley.

With Wrexham losing on Thursday and Huddersfield held at Blackpool at lunchtime, Birmingham and Wycombe knew wins would give them some breathing space.

Birmingham's 1-0 victory over Exeter sounds closer than it was while Wycombe struck late to win 2-1 at Mansfield.

Barnsley suffered a surprise defeat at Bristol Rovers and Stockport replace Reading in the top six with their 3-1 win in Berkshire.

Leyton Orient's momentum was halted with a goalless draw at Peterborough and Bolton's draw with struggling Cambridge United keeps them in touch.

    • Crawley drew 1-1 against Burton after Tola Showunmi equalised just past the 72 minute mark.

    • Rotherham beat Charlton by 4-2, despite a late goal by the away side.
    • AND we had some late drama as Wigan scored in the 95th minute to win 2-1 away to Stevenage.

    Birmingham 1-0 Exeter

A goal from Ethan Laird in first half injury time wins it for the leaders but they were less than impressive.

Blues struggled to create many clear cut chances against an unambitious Exeter side who rarely threatened but will still be unhappy with the nature and timing of the goal they conceded.

There was lengthy injury time at the end of the game because of a sickening head injury to the visitors' Vincent Harper who had to be stretchered-off.

In that extra time Exeter's Jack McMillan was sent-off for a second yellow card offence just to complete a miserable afternoon.
