Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC One: "It was a tough game for us. Mentally, physically – you could see a few players were on the edge today. We’re delighted to get through.

"I thought it was going to be a difficult night before the game. [The early goal] made it doubly difficult because the atmosphere in the stadium totally changed. We managed to get a foothold and did really well. At half-time it was about staying calm. I thought we did that a lot better in the second half."

On injuries: "In the last couple of weeks we seem to have picked up a couple. It would be the last thing [we need] to derail us. We have such a small squad. Last season we had big numbers of players out and it disrupted us in the middle of the season.

"We were forced to take Dan Burn off. It was something with his groin. Fingers crossed it’s not too bad."

Eddie Howe deserves a lot of credit. He’s taken the cup competitions seriously. He’s made changes today, but they had to be made after midweek [against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup].

He’s got a good team who like to play on the front foot and like to play with energy. They’ve shown today they have a good squad.

Absolute disaster for Verbruggen. It's an awful mistake, such a disappointing start after the previous game. An awful start. Palmer hasn't even made good contact, he's scuffed it into the ground.

Cole Palmer is such a special player, this team thrives when he's in it, it's a huge plus for the team when he's in it. Also the fans want to be seeing the top players playing week in week out, and he's definitely one of them.

Rather predictably, they are all getting booed, even though they all gave their all when in the Seagulls colours.

We were all impressed with Birmingham's performance, especially in the first half.

Then they started to lose their legs a bit and Sandro Tonali started to dictate the game.

It was always going to be a big atmosphere here and the game didn't let us down. Birmingham went toe-to-toe with a good Newcastle side.

It's a big chance for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to show what he can do in a season where he has found game time tough to come by. He gets a snap shot inside the opening two minutes but can only drill a left-footed strike into the side netting.

Great game of football, what we want to see in the FA Cup. Great effort from Birmingham, the way they got at Newcastle, made chances. Unfortunately for them they just fell short.

Birmingham didn’t half give it a good go, but I think Newcastle deserve credit as well.

The number of changes they made. Newcastle have had to stand up and fight, everything you need to do when you come to a ground like this.

They come away with a really good performance and a fantastic result.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler believes his players will come to see last weekend’s 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Nottingham Forest as a “key point” in their careers.

Last Saturday’s defeat at the City Ground was the club’s heaviest in the Premier League and the second worst in their 123-year history, leaving them 10th in the table.

Injuries have contributed to a run of two wins in 12 stretching back to November as early optimism surrounding Hurzeler’s appointment has cooled. Nevertheless the manner of their capitulation against Forest, where they conceded four times in the final 25 minutes was alarming, rendering their hopes of qualifying for Europe increasingly faint.

“The players can look back in years to come on this tough week as a key point in their career,” said Hurzeler, who replaced former boss Roberto de Zerbi in June to become the league’s youngest ever permanent manager.

“In times like this, the players maybe in five or 10 years will look back and say this was the phase, this was the situation that makes me a better player. This was the phase in my career where I maybe changed my approach. We have been honest to each other and a lot of individual talks. It is important to stay calm and go back to basics.”

Brighton need to bounce back from losing 7-0 to Nottingham Forest, while Chelsea have been very up and down in recent weeks.

Seagulls boss Fabian Hurzeler is quite an interesting character to watch on the touchline because of how emotional he is during the game.

He has had five yellow cards and a red already this season. He has got to be careful because that kind of indiscipline can rub off on your players.

This game will be tight - I certainly don't see Brighton capitulating the way they did at Forest, but the key thing for them is Yasin Ayari and Carlos Baleba being fit to return in midfield.

Even if they both return, I still feel like Chelsea will find a way of winning the tie. It may go all the way to penalties, but I am going to say Enzo Maresca's side will win it in extra time.
