Nuno Mendes struck deep into stoppage time to give Paris St-Germain a significant advantage against Aston Villa in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Parc des Princes.

Villa looked like they would only need to overturn a one-goal deficit at Villa Park until Mendes stole in to deliver a devastating blow to Unai Emery's side in the dying seconds.

The visitors had stunned the newly crowned French champions when Morgan Rogers arrived at the far post to turn in Youri Tielemans' cross from the left after 35 minutes.

That breakaway goal to take the lead delighted an away support that included the Prince of Wales.

The lead only lasted four minutes before PSG drew level, however, with Desire Doue leaving Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez helpless with a magnificent curling drive from 20 yards.

PSG's brilliant Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia troubled Villa all night, and he put them ahead four minutes after the break when he turned substitute Axel Disasi before drilling a powerful shot high past Martinez at his near post.

Villa keeper Martinez, who had few friends in France following his antics at the 2022 World Cup final when Argentina beat Les Bleus in Qatar, made several fine saves on this occasion but was powerless as he was wrong-footed by Mendes in the closing moments.

It made it a bitterly disappointing finale for former PSG boss Emery and his Villa side, who were left despondent as the locals celebrated rapturously.

Raphinha equalled Lionel Messi's club record for goal involvements in a single Champions League campaign as Barcelona thrashed Borussia Dortmund to take command of their quarter-final tie.

The Brazilian forward scored and assisted twice to reach 19 goal involvements in the competition this term, the same as Messi achieved in the 2011-12 campaign.

Raphinha's 12th European goal of the season gave Barcelona a deserved first-half lead, before Robert Lewandowski struck twice after the break and Lamine Yamal added a fourth to put the Spanish side on course for the semi-finals.

The hosts ran riot in the early stages and could have scored three times inside the opening seven minutes, with Yamal and Lewandowski forcing Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel into smart saves. Barca's pressure told in the 25th minute, although the goal was a touch fortuitous.

Fermin Lopez's free-kick - awarded when Karim Adeyemi pulled the hair of Jules Kounde - found Inigo Martinez at the far post, who headed the ball across the six-yard box. Pau Cubarsi poked the ball towards the far corner past the dive of Kobel, with Champions League top scorer Raphinha just about staying onside for a sliding finish on the line.

Dortmund grew into the game as the half progressed, with Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy going close as the break approached. Lewandowski, though, doubled Barca's lead three minutes after the restart from a yard out, converting Raphinha's header across the face of goal following Yamal's cross to the far post.

Dortmund began to struggle as mistakes on the ball gifted the La Liga leaders several more chances. Fermin hit the outside of the post with a fizzing low strike from 16 yards out, before blazing over a rebound a minute later.

Lewandowski put the first leg beyond doubt with his 99th goal for the club, finishing off a lightning counter-attack in the 66th minute with a ruthless first-time strike under Kobel. Raphinha matched Messi's record by sliding the ball across for Yamal to finish in the 77th minute following another ruthless break.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa full-back Matty Cash, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "A tough night. We knew coming here it was going to be tough. They dominated Liverpool and they were unlucky to lose [the first leg].

"I thought we defended the box really well, I thought at the end we were unfortunate and unlucky to concede. We have Villa Park next game - I think it will be a different game.

"The manager spoke in there and he said "it is only half-time". At home we are really strong. We are more than capable to score two or three goals at home. We will learn from it and we will move on.

"I love going out there and playing in the big games. We wanted to compete better and we wanted a better result. We have come a long way and it is only half-time - we are more than capable to go on and win the game

"We have got to respect them, they're probably favourite to win the tournament. At Villa Park we feel confident. It will be a different game. I look forward too it."

On Emi Martinez: "He's a big character. I wouldn't want anyone else in goal. He brings that experience and character to the team. Tonight, he pulled off some fantastic saves - it is great to have him behind us."

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to TNT Sports: "It was more or less the expectation I had before the match - 2-1 or 3-1. We will play at home next week and it will be a huge challenge for us, but we will feel strong at home with our supporters at Villa Park.

"Today, we needed to be disciplined in defence and even when we were losing 2-1, we had three approaches in their box. More or less, we are right in our momentum to be close to a result. The last goal we conceded, we have to accept it. Our mind doesn't change a lot - we have to win at home and by more than one goal.

"In the first half, we had three or four chances to get in their box, maybe only one chance to score. We needed to be clinical and we were in the first half, not in the second.

"We believe in our supporters, we believe in Villa Park and that the players can get the best performance next week."

PSG manager Luis Enrique on TNT Sports: "They scored that goal that felt a little difficult to accept but we just had to win that match and to score in the last minute was great for us and our confidence. We have to think about the second leg and it's going to be difficult for sure.

"It's important to believe in ourselves and the three goals were great, a lot of quality. We're very happy with the result. It will be difficult [at Villa Park] but we will try to play the same way - it's our DNA."

On why PSG are fun to watch: "Well, they are all quality players with a lot of ambition. We try to win and fight every single match. Our supporters are great every single match. Today, it's a really nice day for us."

The third goal made it more comfortable.

"Obviously the scoreline is not in our favour but we've got another game and we'll try and turn it around.

"We're here for a reason, we're not here to just compete. We want to keep fighting and normally we have the quality to compete with any team in the world.

"There's loads of belief in the changing room. We have nothing to lose, nobody thought we'd win the tie in the first place. Why not just go for it? We've definitely got the quality to turn things around. It's not done yet."

"We are happy with this result, but we have to keep going as there is the second game and the job is not finished."
