With what has been a poor season for Pep Guardiola and his players, the FA Cup remains Man City's only hope for silverware. And with what has been an injury-hit season so far for his side, he'll have had his fingers and toes crossed for an injury-free break.

    • Who was on duty? Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku, Ederson, Savinho, Omar Marmoush, Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, Phil Foden, Rico Lewis, James McAtee, Stefan Ortega Moreno, Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, and Abdukodir Khusanov.

'I suspect Nuno will rest some'published at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Lyle Stevik on X: Phil, do you think Nottingham Forest might rest a few against Brighton as they did in the last round against Ipswich? They'll never get a better chance of top four than this season surely.

Afternoon, Lyle. There must be a temptation with a game against Manchester United at The City Ground on Tuesday night, but the FA Cup also presents a huge opportunity to win a trophy as the competition has opened up so much.

I suspect Nuno Espirito Santo will rest some, but I would be amazed if he sent out a scratch side.

'Premier League football is meant to be the promised land'published at 15:16 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Dave from Derby: Hi Phil, with it looking very likely that all the three promoted teams are going to get relegated for the second season running and the gap between Premier league and EFL growing wider and wider, do you think it is damaging the entertainment value of the Premier league? Thanks

Hello, Dave. I fear what you are saying is right thanks to the increased financial firepower of those in the Premier League. I really hope this won’t become the norm, but I do agree it does spoil the entertainment value when a team, such as Southampton, is cut adrift and demoralised.

Premier League football is meant to be the promised land, but what pleasure have Southampton fans got out of it this season? And they are not the first to suffer this fate.

  14. Timeline of Silva's careerpublished at 15:12 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

Marco Silva is set to be in charge for the 500th time against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup quarterfinals. The Portuguese manager currently has the club eighth in the Premier League and is one win away from booking to berth to Wembley.

With that said, let's have a look at his career timeline:

    • 2011-2016 - Starting his career in Portugal - Silva establishes himself as a manager in Portugal; working at Estoril before taking charge of Sporting where he wins the Portuguese cup. He's sacked, reportedly for not wearing the club's 'official suit' in a cup match, and signs with Greek giants Olympiakos.
    • 2017-2021 - Making his name in England - Silva joins Hull City for a short spell in 2017, then moves to Watford, then Everton in 2018. At Everton, he records the club's largest victory over Man Utd but is sacked the season after with the club 18th in the Premier League.
    • 2021-now - Four years at Fulham - Silva is named Fulham manager and helps secure Premier League promotion. They finish the following season 10th in the Premier League before leading the club to their first-ever Carabao Cup semi-finals after beating his former side Everton on penalties.

  15. 'You took the stairs while many had the elevator' - Mourinho congrats Silva on 500 gamespublished at 15:06 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

Former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho congratulated Fulham manager Marco Silva as he takes charge of a club side for the 500th time.

Mourinho, speaking to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, external, said: "500? A beautiful number, which with more grey hairs will reach 600... 700...

"Congratulations Marco, for a beautiful career, based on talent, work, seriousness, discretion. You climbed the stairs, where many had the elevator at their disposal. Congratulations for a career made of results and not perceptions. I admire and applaud you."

Silva has managed clubs like Sporting, Everton and others. Currently, as the manager of Fulham, the Portuguese has the London side eighth in the Premier League and in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.

'Everyone loves an underdog'published at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Rob: Is it fair to say all neutrals will be supporting Bournemouth on Sunday? At least that would guarantee a new, or long time, waiting name on the cup.

Hi, Rob. You may have a point because everyone loves an underdog and Bournemouth will be underdogs here. I do agree it is refreshing to see the FA Cup so open this season but it is Manchester City’s single trophy hope and they won’t care about the romanticism a Bournemouth win might bring.

I’m at The Vitality Stadium on Sunday and really looking forward to it.

Gibbs-White 'is such a talented player'published at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Reggie, Croydon: For Phil: do you think the way Nottingham Forest play, when compared to how England dominate possession, makes it harder for Callum Hudson-Odoi or Morgan Gibbs-White to get in the England team?

Hi, Reggie. I’d hope that wouldn’t be the case. Hudson-Odoi is well known to Thomas Tuchel from his time at Chelsea, so he will know what he can do, while he did call Morgan Gibbs-White into his squad after injuries. I think Gibbs-White, in particular, was very unlucky not to be called up at the first time of asking, not just as a late replacement. He is such a talented player having a great season.

While we've got you here, what are your thoughts on semi-automated offside technology?

Personally think it's been a great addition to the Champions League and speeds up the whole process.

  19. Premier League to welcome semi-automated offsides before season end?published at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Semi-automated offside technology could be introduced to the Premier League by the middle of next month.

It had been hoped the system would be in place during the October or November international windows this season but that was delayed due to issues that arose with the system.

A trial was introduced for the fifth round of this season's FA Cup and will continue in the three games hosted by Premier League clubs this weekend.

The results will be assessed early next week and providing there are no issues, the green light will be given to a full roll out in the Premier League.

Sources have said it would not be in place for the midweek round of matches that immediately follow the FA Cup and in all likelihood, it would be too soon for the matches scheduled for the 5/6 April weekend.

But beyond that, the system could be in place.

'This is what “test events” are for'published at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Andy Jones on X: Hi Phil. Do you think the transport links will be improved for the fans to travel to Bramley Moore? I have seen reports that Sandhills Railway Station may be unsuitable for the amount of fans travelling to the stadium especially when there's a capacity of 52k+.

Hi Andy. I’ve been observing this from afar rather than in person but I have many friends who have contacted me to say it has been unsatisfactory. Hopefully this is what “test events” are for. To test – and improvements will be made to the infrastructure before the stadium is open at full capacity.
