De Bruyne and Alexander-Arnold's situations 'completely different'published at 13:11 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Robert McLaren from Glasgow: Good afternoon Phil. Can you explain why that Kevin De Bruyne's contract situation has not been given the same traction as Trent Alexander Arnold’s? It seems like most of the media especially, the BBC, want to try and bring negativity to a brilliant first season by Slot?

Afternoon, Robert. Sorry, but I totally disagree with your perception of the media’s treatment of this story. The two situations are completely different. De Bruyne is a one of the greatest players of the Premier League era whose Manchester City career is coming to a natural conclusion as he gets older and has had injuries in recent times.

Alexander-Arnold is at the peak of his career and someone who Liverpool would happily keep for years if they could get him to agree to stay.

This explains why the two cases are being treated in different ways.

Is there anything worse in football than losing to your closest rival in a final?

    I think not!

It's nice to see some different teams in with a real shout of a trophy. But as a Brighton fan, even if we're able to get past Forest - itself a big ask given what happened at the City Ground recently and their quality - the prospect of potentially facing Palace in a semi or final is too appalling to contemplate.

Liverpool's top three all time right-backspublished at 12:55 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Anon: Hi Phil Where do you think Trent Alexander-Arnold is on Liverpool’s list of all time right-backs. I'd probably put him third behind Phil Neal and Steve Nicol.

In terms of honours he would be third but as a natural footballer he would be right at the top. Of the three you mentioned, I would put Steve Nicol first because he was a magnificent, under-rated player. He could play right-back, left-back and in midfield and was as accomplished in all three. He was a fine defender who could also score goals. I saw so much of Steve Nicol at his peak for Liverpool and I am happy to admit I was a huge admirer of him as a total footballer.

When measured by pure success, then of course Phil Neal would come out on top - but Nicol for me.

Is it fair to say all neutrals will be supporting Bournemouth on Sunday? At least that would guarantee a new or long time waiting name on the cup.

    Rob

Agree with Rob? Are you a neutral, and if so, will you be supporting Bournemouth when they face Man City? Thumbs up for 'yes', thumbs down for 'no'.

'Potter is a builder rather than a quick-fix manager'published at 12:45 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Chris from Tilbury: Hi Phil, bearing in mind Graham Potter has literally been hamstrung by having no forwards available how do you think he's started, our away form is solid but at home it's still very Moyes-like.

Afternoon, Chris. Very early days and Graham Potter is a builder rather than a quick-fix manager. I was not expecting him to make an instant impact when measured by huge changes and results.

I get the feeling this will be a steady process as this is how he works – although I’m sure he wouldn’t mind a run of victories.

I think we will see the real Potter effect at the start of next season when he has had time to work in the summer markets.

  8. When the quarter-finalists last won the FA Cup?published at 12:40 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

We've got a 50% split. We could have a brand new winner with four of the remaining eight teams having never lifted the FA Cup before.

The other four have, but, apart from Manchester City, it would likely be the first that the majority of fans in these fanbases will have witnessed.

    • Preston North End - 1888-1889 & 1937-1938
    • Aston Villa - 1886-87, 1894-95, 1896-97, 1904-05, 1912-12, 1919-20, 1956-57
    • Nottingham Forest - 1897-1898 & 1958-1959
    • Manchester City - 1903–04, 1933–34, 1955–56, 1968–69, 2010–11, 2018–19 & 2022–23
    • Crystal Palace - never (lost two finals)
    • Brighton & Hove Albion - never (lost one final)
    • Fulham - never (lost one final)
    • Bournemouth - never

Nb 12:06: For those that have taken the new a little too literally on this post...

I, Ben / dog man (iykyk) am aware that some of these teams have won the trophy in the past - I just meant a new team for 2025. Because Manchester United won it last year. And they aren't in it anymore.

    Get me?

I'll slap myself on the wrist for causing confusion.

Anyway, let's have a look at when those remaining in the competition last won it, shall we?

(See, it was all in the plan for a follow up post)

Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta suffered a horror challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts in the fifth round FA Cup tie between Palace and Millwall on 1 March. The incident left Mateta bloodied and had to be stretchered off and rushed to the hospital.

The high-foot challenge from Roberts got him sent off as Mateta required 25 stitches around his left ear. Roberts received an extended six-match ban for the incident after further review from The FA.

The forward returned to training only 10 days after the incident but only now has he been cleared to play. The likelihood of him featuring against Fulham in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup is high with the French striker teasing his return with a video on his Instagram page.

    Crystal Palace

French striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta has been pictured training with the rest of the Crystal Palace squad today as they are set to take on Fulham in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Mateta can be seen wearing a special mask that will protect his ear and the fixture this weekend could be the striker's first appearance since the incident occurred on 1 March against Millwall.

While the Palace forward returned to training on 11 March, the forward is yet to feature for his side as he continues to heal from the injury. Mateta took to Instagram to post a video with the caption reading, "It's Time." The video suggests that his return to action is imminent.

Mateta has scored 15 goals and three assists in all competitions for the London club.
