Some on here are not seeing any reason to smile about England going up to the top tier in the NL. I wonder if these are the same fans who groaned and grumbled when England went down. It seems you just can't win being England manager.

  3. 'I think Carsley has thrown a conundrum at Tuchel'published at 09:29 Greenwich Mean Time

    Stephen Kelly
Former Republic of Ireland defender on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast

I think Carsley has thrown a conundrum at him [Thomas Tuchel] with starting Ollie Watkins. He has left the new manager in a position where he has to make a big decision.

England dominated Ireland in the second-half but for the pressing game and for the high energy tempo that the players they have can do, you look at Watkins and think maybe he could be a starter, so it throws up a few questions.

They need to breed success, they need to have success - they have too many good players.

England need to be successful under Tuchel and that’s what it all comes down to.

  4. 'Tuchel has a wonderful opportunity to win a trophy'published at 09:23 Greenwich Mean Time

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on the Football Daily podcast.

The biggest thing he [Lee Carsley] will take for me in terms of the handover is finding the balance in the team and if Thomas Tuchel can find that in his way, in the way that he wants to play - and for me, you have to have isolate or have in your head who that is. There may be the odd change but not frequent lots of changes in and out because it's very difficult then to know what direction you go in.

There are positions where there is talent everywhere and it isn't easy to unpick. When you've got it all there right in front of you, you have to go in a direction.

Getting that balance right with this team and this group of players, he has a wonderful opportunity to win a trophy.

Well done England! Nations League will never have the prestige of the Euros or World Cup, but I much prefer it to friendlies. It offers back door routes to bigger competitions and it gives the smaller nations a chance to play meaningful games they can actually be competitive in, rather than just waiting around to get trounced in qualifiers.

  8. Carsley's decisions 'have smoothed the way' for Tuchelpublished at 08:51 Greenwich Mean Time

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent

He often said, Lee Carsley, how it was part of his responsibility to show the incoming manager what he’s going to have at his disposal. And I think he’s done that. 32 players got onto the pitch for England over these three months, he handed out eight debuts, and made decisions such as leaving out Harry Kane in Athens that have smoothed the way should Tuchel want to do the same thing.

Not cheered an England goal like I did Bowen’s since the Palmer goal in the final! So happy for Jarrod. Such a good player, seems a nice bloke and always gives his absolute all for England, no matter how few minutes he gets!

    The law of unintended consequences?

It was a dream debut for Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who came off the bench to score England's fifth - but his future father-in-law was not happy.

Harwood-Bellis is engaged to Roy Keane's daughter Leah and the former Republic of Ireland midfielder, who was at Wembley as a pundit for ITV, joked the nuptials could be in jeopardy

"It's bittersweet for me this. It is not done and dusted yet," Keane said, in his own inimitable style.

"Things can change very quickly in the Keane household, let me tell you."

    You have been warned, Taylor.

  13. 'Balance was a big thing for Carsley's England'published at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent on 5 Live Breakfast

The timing couldn't be better for them [young players] to be thrown in. I think Carsley was very keen to do that. Of them, I'd certainly pick out Noni Madueke who showed himself to be a really live option to play instead of Bukayo Saka. I think Curtis Jones of Liverpool over the course of these two matches, Angel Gomes and Lewis Hall as well.

I think it's simply the balance, that was a big thing for Carsley's England. The balance was for the most part there and that does help when you have a left-footed left-back in the team and that's what Lewis Hall has provided in these matches.

Lee Carsley did what he set out to do: win promotion and develop England's playing style. He was vilified when England lost one game, by writers the majority of whom have never managed or played at any notable level. He was prepared to try different things to move England away from the turgid side passing and procrastination on the ball at Euro '24. Carsley has also proved that the succession model can work.

Catch this stat from Opta last night?

Four players scored their first England goal in the same game for the first time since October, 1930 v Northern Ireland (Harry Burgess, Jimmy Hampson, Sammy Crooks, Eric Houghton).

For those out of the loop, Taylor Harwood-Bellis is soon to be Roy Keane's son-in-law.

We talked about it in Wednesday's live, if you're interested.

Keane was a pundit on ITV last night and when he was asked about Harwood-Bellis scoring against Republic of Ireland quipped the defender's marriage to his daughter is "not done and dusted yet. Things can change very quickly in the Keane household".

Only just clocked that four of England's five goalscorers last night scored their very first international goal. They are:

    Anthony Gordon (nine caps)

    Conor Gallagher (21 caps)

    Jarrod Bowen (14 caps)

    Taylor Harwood-Bellis (one cap)

Seems incredible Bowen hasn't scored before, to be fair.

  18. 'Carsley has done a brilliant job'published at 08:10 Greenwich Mean Time

    Clinton Morrison
Former Republic of Ireland striker on the Football Daily podcast.

Some of these players that have been given opportunities - they have all taken it and that is down to Lee Carsley.

All these youngsters, I hope one day they remember the job that Carsley has done to get them into this first team because he has done a brilliant job.

It gives Thomas Tuchel food for thought because I guarantee there are some players that Carsley has put in that Tuchel wouldn't have had a look at and now he knows what these players can do.

    Le Tournoi.

It was held in France in 1997 as a warm-up to the 1998 World Cup.

England, France, Italy and Brazil took part in a league format. England beat France and Italy, but lost to Brazil; although six points were enough to bring football home.
