  3. Could group win boost Northern Ireland World Cup hopes?published at 15:21 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2024

Luxembourg v Northern Ireland (19:45 GMT)

Winning their Nations League group could also expand Northern Ireland's possible routes into the World Cup in 2026.

When World Cup qualifying begins next spring, the 12 group winners will automatically qualify for the finals. The 12 runners-up will qualify for a play-off, and will be joined by four group winners from the Nations League.

The four highest-ranked Nations League group winners who did not automatically qualify for the finals or secure a play-off through the traditional qualifying route will therefore be the nations that move into those extra play-off spots.

Now, the easiest and most straight-forward way for Northern Ireland to reach the play-offs or finals is to finish in the top two of their World Cup qualifying group.

Should Northern Ireland top League C3 in the Nations League, but then get a difficult World Cup qualifying draw, O'Neill will want the other Nations League group winners to finish in their top two of their qualifying groups.

While Northern Ireland are in the third tier, they would move their way up the list of rankings of Nations League group winners if the traditional bigger nations qualify or secure a play-off as expected.

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is currently staying at the Lowry Hotel in the city centre as he settles into his new job.

That was the hotel fellow Portuguese Jose Mourinho called home for a mammoth 895 nights, the entirety of his time with the Old Trafford club.

But Amorim's intention is to get somewhere else pretty quickly.

It is anticipated he will find a more family friendly location on the outskirts of the city.

  8. Controversial penalty decides Merseyside derbypublished at 15:06 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2024

It was another busy weekend in the Women's Super League, including Chelsea going top of the table with victory over Manchester City and Arsenal coming out on top at Tottenham in the north London derby.

One of the biggest talking points though was at Goodison Park, where Everton beat Merseyside rivals Liverpool 1-0 thanks to a controversial penalty from Katja Snoeijs shortly before half-time

Referee Abigail Byrne awarded a penalty when Fuka Nagano clipped Honoka Hayashi but replays showed the foul appeared to be outside the area.

"It wasn't a penalty. That's it. It changes the complete complexity of the game," said Liverpool boss Matt Beard.

"You have the referee, the fourth official, the linesman and the assistant referee all with unblocked views. Even I saw the contact was about a yard outside the box.

"I just give up with it to be honest with you because it happens every week - not just with us. It's cost us the game today, 100%."

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland hasn't been putting up the ludicrous numbers we're used to seeing in the Premier League in recent weeks but that hasn't stopped him on the international stage.

The forward scored four times across Norway's two Nations League matches including a hat-trick in a 5-0 win against Kazakhstan on Sunday.

FPL managers everywhere will be hoping to see that form continue when the Premier League resumes this weekend...

  20. Depleted Poland have point to prove against Scotspublished at 14:22 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2024

    Poland v Scotland (19:45 GMT)

    Liam McLeod
    BBC Sport Scotland

A 5-1 Nations League thrashing at the hands of Roberto Martinez's table-topping Portugal while Scotland were battling to victory over Croatia has left Poland without a hope of finishing in the top two as they prepare to welcome Steve Clarke's side to Warsaw.

Staying in League A is now their only target because of an inferior head-to-head record with Croatia, and coach Michal Probierz has the added issue of being without many of his likely starters against Scotland after watching his team dismantled in the second half by Cristiano Ronaldo and co.

"Football life is like a whirlpool," Probierz said as he sifted through the wreckage of their pummelling in Porto. "If you get hit, you have to get up."
