Besart Topalloj struck a second-half winner as Hartlepool registered a first success in seven games by beating north-east rivals Gateshead 1-0 in the National League.

The on-loan Bromley defender drilled home his maiden Pools goal in the 74th minute to settle a tight encounter at Gateshead International Stadium.

Topalloj's finish was Hartlepool's first goal in four games and ensured the home side's winless run stretched to six matches.

The Tynesiders were given six minutes of added time to chase a leveller but created little as Simon Grayson's visitors hung on for all three points.
