Leicester v Wolves (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi calling their situation a "challenging moment for the club" feels like an understatement.

Vitor Pereira is walking into a club needing to quickly repair the fractures which have become more visible this season.

Results cover over a multitude of problems and if teams are winning then any issues can fade into the background but Wolves' position and form this season has exacerbated the divide between ownership and supporters.

Fans are fed up with a club they view as in decline with owners Focus scaling back on the spending, the discontent during Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Ipswich - Gary O'Neil's final game in charge - evident.

On the pitch they could fall eight points behind Leicester with defeat at the King Power Stadium on Sunday and Pereira will need a fast start to heal the unity Molineux.

Wolves paid about £825,000 in compensation to Vitor Pereira's former club, Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab.

The Portuguese manager had been head coach at Al-Shabab since February.

They were four points above the relegation when he took charge but finished the season in eighth place.

Pereira signed an extension to his contract, until June 2025, at the end of the campaign.

He replaces Gary O'Neil, who was sacked on Sunday following Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Ipswich, which left Wolves second bottom of the Premier League.

Pereira's first game is the trip to Leicester on Sunday, with the Foxes 17th and five points clear of Wolves.

  10. 'If you want a challenge, don't you want to put Man Utd back on the map?'published at 14:29 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

Tottenham v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

    Chris Waddle
Former Newcastle & England winger on The Football Daily podcast

Marcus Rashford, we know is a talented footballer. He's 27, he's played a lot of football over the years, at arguably the biggest football club in the world. So if you want a challenge, don't you want to put Manchester United back on the map? I don't get that, there's no bigger club than Man United in my eyes, globally.

What I've got to say also, we've seen players over the years, undoubted talent - Real Madrid want him, Paris St-Germain want him, so and so want him. They are going to look at him and think 'why is he not consistent? Why does he have a great year and then a terrible year, an average year and then a good year?'

  11. 'Change would probably do Rashford the world of good'published at 14:27 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes a change could do Marcus Rashford the "world of good".

"I don't mind what he said, I think it's spot on," Keane said on the Stick to Football podcast. "Sometimes a deal just works for everybody.

"It's been going on for a year or two now, there's obviously a bit of talent in there, he's been at the club since he was a kid.

"A change would probably do him the world of good, for him and his team and his family. Just go and play, maybe go abroad or whatever it might be."

It has been said often that it's unfortunate, frustrating for Manchester United fans, that Marcus Rashford is clearly out of sorts - personally would love to see him happy and scoring. Maybe he could do a "Belingham" and join Atletico to a renewed start just down the road in Madrid. In any case I wish him well.

Marcus Rashford has a contract with Manchester United until 2028 and has been linked with a variety of clubs, although head coach Ruben Amorim has said he is keen for the 27-year-old England forward to stay.

Ex-United midfielder Roy Keane told the Stick to Football podcast: "I always think if you lose that hunger, it is hard to get it back. Forget about the few bob he's earned over the years - and listen, good for him - but we know, the great players, it's nothing to do with that.

"It's about the next challenge, it's about your pride and Marcus just seems to have definitely lost his way. And if he's lost that real hunger - I know we've mentioned watches and all the stuff off the field - if he's a bit distracted by that, I think sometimes it's hard to get it back.

"I think there's a good chance he might get it back with a change of a club and scenery, a new country, a new league, whatever, but I don't think he'll get it back at United."

[Marcus Rashford has] got a challenge in front of him, where he could roll his sleeves up and say 'I'm going to become a Manchester United legend, I'm going to help this club get back to where they should be'.

That is a challenge. To say 'I need a new challenge', that's the easy way out for me.

Agree that League Cup needs retiring at least for top 6 clubs. The rest of PL could still be in it with a better chance of winning. When was last time any team outside big 6 won the League Cup? It needs to exclude those PL teams playing in Europe.

    Alan

The last two teams other than Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea to win the Carabao Cup were Swansea City (2013) and Birmingham City (2011).

I just want to help Marcus - Amorim on Rashford

Speaking on Wednesday, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said the club are "better" with Marcus Rashford after the forward suggested he could leave Old Trafford.

Amorim suggested the club want the striker - who came through United's youth ranks - to stay, saying: "I don't talk about the future, we talk about the present.

"This kind of club needs big talent and he's a big talent, so he just needs to perform at the highest level and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus."

Asked about Marcus Rashford's desire for a "new challenge", Manchester United's head coach Ruben Amorim said: "I think it's right. We have here a new challenge, it's a tough one.

"For me it's the biggest challenge in football because we are in a difficult situation and I already said this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. I really hope all my players are ready for this new challenge."

Amorim added the club will "try different things" to help Rashford find the "best levels he has shown in the past".

"Nothing has changed - we believe in Marcus," said Amorim. "It's hard to explain to you guys what I am going to do. I'm a little bit emotional so in the moment I will decide what to do.

"It's a hard situation to comment [on]. If I give a lot of importance it will have big headlines in the papers and if I say it's not a problem then my standards are getting low."

The League Cup needs to be reformed if it’s to mean anything anymore. Perhaps the teams that qualify for Europe should be excluded. That would help with the players concerns regarding too many fixtures…a win/win surely.
