Most Premier League goal involvements for Arsenal during Arteta's reign

Bukayo Saka has had the most goal involvements for Arsenal while Mikel Arteta has been in charge. He's scored 52 goals and assisted 44 times.

Martin Odegaard is second with 32 goals scored and 25 assists.

But do Arsenal need more difference-makers to turn their revival under Arteta into silverware?

Nothing will change immediately on the pitch. Everton still have a poor squad with little creativity and pace - that won't change dramatically in the January transfer window. We've still got to grit our teeth, survive this season and then look at rebuilding from the summer.

Nothing guaranteed with new owners, but it just feels good to see ‘positive news’ and ‘Everton’ in the same sentence for a change.

Arsenal's Premier League finishes under Arteta

This season, Arsenal are six points off the pace in third in the Premier League, and third in the Champions League group table. They now have a League Cup semi-final to look forward to.

It is some contrast to the Arsenal Arteta took over back on 20 December 2019.

Having finished runners-up in 2015-16, Arsenal then failed to finish above fifth during the lost Wenger years and Unai Emery's 18-month reign - with Arteta coming in with Arsenal 10th in the Premier League.

It is fair to say Arteta, then just 37 and in his first managerial role, inherited a bloated and ageing squad, and he was fortunate his employers were prepared to show real patience.

Arsenal finished eighth in his first two seasons, which were overshadowed by player unrest, fan dissatisfaction, a global pandemic and the termination of several high-profile player contracts.

A transformation has occurred since then, but questions remain as Arsenal continue to search for that illusive Premier League title - the last of Arsene Wenger's three titles coming back in 2004.

I hate to be 'that' guy but anyone who thinks this spells a new dawn for our club hasn't been paying attention to Serie A! Roma finished fifth in the year Friedkin took over and there's been a slow decline in the squad since then. They are currently only 2 points above the relegation zone, having lost 5 of their last 6 league games! I doubt things will get worse than they are, but I fear they're not going to get much better!

  9. Has Friedkin Group brought stability and success to Roma?published at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

So will The Friedkin Group bring the stability - and ultimately success - to Everton that fans crave?

Well, if their track record at Roma is anything to go by - yes and no.

Paulo Fonseca was manager at Roma when the takeover was completed in 2020. He was replaced by Jose Mourinho in 2021 and the former Chelsea boss brought the club a first European trophy in 60 years - the Conference League - in 2022.

They also finished runners-up in the Europa League the following season, beaten by Sevilla on penalties in the final, but were unable to challenge for the Serie A title.

Mourinho was sacked in January and Roma are now on their fourth manager of 2024, with Claudio Ranieri, 73, coming out of retirement for a third stint at the helm.

Previous boss Ivan Juric had lasted just 12 matches after replacing Mourinho's replacement Daniele de Rossi four games into this season.

The club is currently 12th in Serie A and 14th in the Europa League table.

  11. 'Multi-club symbiosis will only help'published at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

There have been a number of questions raised by supporters about how Everton would sit within The Friedkin Group's multi-club model.

The group also own Serie A club Roma, which they took over in 2020.

Everton's appeal has been based on the club's history, fanbase and the new stadium being built on Bramley-Moore Dock.

Dan Friedkin, the group's founder, assured Roma fans in September: "The potential addition of Everton to our portfolio does not alter our focus on AS Roma. If anything, the multi-club symbiosis will only help Roma.

"Each club in our portfolio operates independently and AS Roma remains at the heart of our football ambitions."

He added that there were no concerns regarding the two clubs co-existing under Uefa rules.

I'm just so relieved more than anything that the takeover is finally done. Given that Roma haven't gone bust under this group, I have faith they can at least get us out of continuous relegation battles. Honestly, if all they do is that, plus the odd cup run, that will do for now. We're regularly bringing through great talents and I think that's the only way we'll get close to winning anything.

    Joe

Christmas has come early for us Evertonians and hopefully an end to the chaos and instability we've had for years. No great expectations for me, I'd be more than happy for a mid-table finish this season.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler on his team's identity: "I think sometimes you have to know what are your roots and what makes you strong. Sometimes I think you need to put this back in the minds of the players.

"We won't try to over-complicate it and we will make the easy things right, do the pressure and the right intensity. All these things that make the clubs strong, that makes the players strong, and how they win the games and the Premier League.

"I think the players are very open to that and they are just trying to improve. They are very open to trying to keep moving forward in this journey and process. We have another chance on Saturday to prove it to ourselves."

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler on staying positive: "We also tried to stay positive and remind them of the positives of the game because not everything was bad.

"The second half we created a lot of chances and had a good reaction. So, I think it needs to be a good balance between being negative and seeing the positive."

As we said earlier, Fabian Hurzeler was holding his news conference this morning, and here's what the Brighton boss had to say on his team's reaction to losing 3-1 to Crystal Palace: "The first day [we were] disappointed after such a bad game and bad experience, but I think it was just an honest reflection and honest analysis of the game.

"I think what went wrong was the basic things in football. You need to defend with everything you have, you need to do the basic things right, you need to play intense, you need to play in possession and in good structures."

  20. Takeover deal gives Friedkin Group '99.5% of club shares'published at 10:30 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

    Friedkin Group completes Everton takeover

    Everton

A letter was sent to Everton shareholders on Wednesday detailing the make-up of the proposed deal, which would lead to Roundhouse Capital Holdings Limited - an affiliate of the Friedkin Group - owning 99.5% of the club's total shares.

It included details of a plan to complete a "debt-for-equity conversion" - a process known as capitalisation.

The outcome of this, the letter states, would ensure that "the club does not negatively impact its Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR) position" and would "strengthen the club’s balance sheet and ensure a significant debt is settled immediately prior to completion".
