There will be plenty of interest in the kind of team Ruben Amorim selects at Tottenham.

He left Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford out of the matchday squad for Sunday's Manchester derby and, without them, United went on to claim a late 2-1 victory over City.

Garnacho is with the squad for tonight's Carabao Cup quarter-final at Tottenham, but fellow forward Rashford is not expected to be involved.

On Tuesday, Rashford told football writer Henry Winter: "It's disheartening to be left out of a derby, but it's happened, we won the game so let's move on. It's disappointing but I'm also someone, as I've got older, I can deal with setbacks."

He added: "For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps."

  2. Amorim already has shot at semi-final spotpublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

Ruben Amorim's now had seven games as Manchester United's head coach and enjoyed his best result yet on Sunday, as United scored two late goals to snatch a 2-1 win at derby rivals City.

The Portuguese boss may have been in charge for just over a month but already has the chance to book a semi-final spot.

United won the competition for a fifth time in 2023 in Erik ten Hag's first season in charge, then they won the FA Cup last season, but he was sacked in October.

The club is expected to challenge for bigger honours but winning this season's first piece of silverware in March would certainly be a positive start to Amorim's tenure.

Palace and Fulham are the two established Premier League sides without any silverware and they'd kill for a trophy. And even the big 6 like silverware and a parade, and it gives a European slot. And surely all players want a medal in their careers and the fans want their team to win things. Surely the better question is honestly, who wouldn't like a chance at silverware?

  4. Carabao Cup a 'huge opportunity' for Spurs - Cahillpublished at 13:44 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

Tottenham v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

Speaking on the Planet Premier League podcast, former Chelsea and England defender Gary Cahill said that winning a trophy "has to be a priority" for Tottenham.

"If you're a fan you want to see that, if you're a player you want that," he added.

"I'd say that's the biggest priority [right now]. They've not won a trophy for so long and I think it's a huge opportunity for them [this season]."

Tottenham knocked out Manchester United's neighbours City in the previous round, before winning 4-0 at City in the league.

Spurs then went five games without a win but got back to winning ways in emphatic fashion on Sunday, winning 5-0 at Southampton.

They have also avoided defeat in their past four games with United, winning 3-0 the last time they met in September at Old Trafford.

Chris sent us a message earlier, saying the Carabao Cup "holds little value" for the teams left in this season's competition and that it "should probably just be retired".

Well, Rob is one of the Tottenham fans who disagrees as he replied saying Spurs "are desperate to get our hands on it".

Tottenham won the competition for a fourth time in 2008 but have not won silverware since. Their quest to end their trophy drought continues later at home to Manchester United (20:00 GMT).

There are some big teams already in the semi-finals - league leaders Liverpool, north London rivals Arsenal and Newcastle, who have had an even longer wait for silverware than Spurs.

So how important is it, Spurs fans, for your team to go all the way this season?

  7. People around Moshiri 'let him down'published at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

    Everton

Alan Stubbs told Sky Sports that he believed former Everton owner Farhad Moshiri was "badly advised" but had to "take the blame because he listened to that".

"With Farhad Moshiri, the one thing you can't knock him for is he put his money where his mouth was," said former Everton defender Stubbs.

"The problem was that I think the people around him let him down.

"He was badly advised and has to take a bit of the blame because he listened to that.

"His lasting legacy is that he has provided us with a state-of-the-art new stadium that we are about to move into.

"The Friedkin Group now start off with a blank piece of paper and the chance for them to put their imprint on this football club."

Former Everton defender Alan Stubbs has been speaking with Sky Sports about The Friedkin Group's takeover.

When asked if this was a good day for the club, he said: "Only time will tell, but I think today's news is great news for Everton Football Club.

"It brings the curtain down on a chapter where there has not been too many positives. Hopefully, with The Friedkin Group, now we have got a brighter future in front of us.

"They certainly look like they know what they are doing, which is obviously half the battle. They come with not just a wealth of experience in football but also a financial clout as well."

Thomas Tuchel will start work as England head coach in January, and Bukayo Saka says the prospect of working with the German manager is "exciting".

Tuchel won the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund and two Ligue 1 titles at Paris St-Germain, including a domestic treble in 2019-20. He became Chelsea manager in January 2021, winning the Champions League, Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup.

"He's a coach who has won in the past," said Saka.

"He has top experience, so I think everyone is looking forward to working under him to see if we can continue and to see if we can take the next step there also."

The Three Lions' next matches are in March, when they face Albania and Latvia in World Cup qualifiers.

Bukayo Saka says he and his Arsenal team-mates are "not scared" of saying they want to win the Premier League or Champions League this season.

The Gunners have finished runners-up to Manchester City in each of the past two domestic campaigns, and head into the festive period third in the table - six points off top spot.

It is four years since Arsenal won a major trophy, and Saka is determined to help them end that run this season.

"We're not scared. The last two seasons we've competed for the league and come very close," he told BBC Sport in an exclusive interview.

Arsenal's rise up the Premier League saw them return to the Champions League last season after a six-year absence, reaching the quarter-finals.

Saka added: "We're back in the Champions League - we have some experience there now - so we feel we're ready to compete for every trophy.

"We really want to take that next step and try to win something."

Wilfried Singo's club Monaco showed their support for the Ivory Coast defender after he suffered racist abuse on social media following his challenge on Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The club wrote on X, external: "AS Monaco condemns in the strongest terms the unacceptable racist remarks made against Wilfried Singo on social media after last night's match against Paris Saint-Germain.

"These behaviours have no place in sport, either on or off the field, and are in total contradiction with the values defended by the club. The club gives its full support to Wilfried."

Monaco defender Wilfried Singo has apologised to Gianluigi Donnarumma following his reckless challenge that led to Paris St-Germain's Italy goalkeeper requiring medical treatment on a facial injury.

Singo wrote on Instagram: "My act was obviously not intentional, but I was able to see afterwards that he had a serious injury to his face."

He then addressed the shotstopper directly, saying "I wish you a good recovery".

As an Everton fan delighted with the news of the takeover. The Kenwright and Moshiri years have seen a chronic mismanagement and lack of ambition, chaos without strategy and an acceptance of mediocrity. A good start would be a professionalisation of the club’s operations and an ambition to match the club’s motto.

  16. The numbers on Everton's takeoverpublished at 12:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Sources close to the Friedkin Group have told me they feel buying Everton is a "bargain" deal, considering it is an "amazing" club with "huge potential" and a brand new stadium on the horizon.

The now former owner Farhad Moshiri invested more then £750m of his own money into the club, but his return from selling the club is less than £50m.

During their period of due diligence, the Friedkin Group looked at the eye-watering amounts of debt the club were in and have managed to convert much of the short-term, high interest debt into sensible long-term solutions.

A £225m loan to Rights and Media Funding has been paid off, while around £260m put into the club by the Friedkin Group for operational costs has been converted into equity.

A £200m loan to A-Cap, which it took over from the financially-stricken 777 Partners, has been massively reduced and restructured to more favourable terms.

Clearly those are decisions that make business sense from highly experienced people as they aim for a "strong and sustainable future" for the club.

The draw will take place tonight, after the conclusion that tie, with the semi-finals taking place over two legs, on the weeks commencing 6 January and 3 February.

  18. Moshiri's Everton years: 'Chaos, crisis, dysfunction, mutiny'published at 12:30 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

    Farhad MoshiriImage source, Getty Images

When Farhad Moshiri laid out his grand plan for supremacy after taking control at Everton, the mission statement was that he did not want the club to become "a museum".

As Moshiri finally takes his leave after almost nine years of chaos, dysfunction, discontent and squandering of finances on an industrial scale, the great old stage of Goodison Park has more closely resembled a mausoleum.

Moshiri's imagined path to glory was paved with good intentions when, hailed as "the perfect partner" by then chairman Bill Kenwright, he bought a 49.6% share in Everton in February 2016.

Instead, very occasional shafts of light have been overshadowed by fan fury, managerial churn, relegation battles, boardroom collapse, Premier League points deductions and a financial crisis that pushed Everton to the brink.

In all, Moshiri invested around £750m in his dream but ended with little or no financial return as Everton spiralled downwards.

So, as American billionaire Dan Friedkin takes charge after purchasing Moshiri's now 94.1% stake, how will the British-Iranian businessman's time be recalled and what, if anything, will be his legacy?

  19. Everton takeover 'a relief'published at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2024

    Shamoon Hafez
    BBC Sport football news reporter

After almost two years of following the takeover saga, we have finally reached the end game with the Friedkin Group being handed the keys as the new owners of Everton Football Club.

During that period, I have dealt with club officials, Farhad Moshiri's office, 777 Partners - whose takeover bid ended in failure and people at the Friedkin Group.

Changes will come in the boardroom but much off-field uncertainty can now be put to bed and we can focus on on-field issues, with the main aim of seeing Everton survive as a Premier League club.

One key line that stood out from the press releases today came from incoming executive chairman Marc Watts, who said: "As stewards of Everton, we look forward to showing our commitment to the club through actions, not words."

With the January transfer window about to open, let's see if they bring in an eye-catching signing to get the fans onside early on.

Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had to be replaced after suffering a nasty facial injury during their 4-2 win at Monaco in Ligue 1.

The Italy international was caught in the face by the boot of Monaco defender Wilfried Singo and needed about 10 staples to close the wounds.

He was replaced by Matvey Safonov in the 22nd minute with the score at 0-0. Singo was not punished, with the challenge reckless but without intent.

PSG boss Luis Enrique, said: "The refereeing decisions? I can't do anything, I couldn't see the action, but when you see an action like that it's always difficult.

"The players don't intend to hurt. It's difficult to referee this kind of match, I'm not talking about the refereeing work."

In a statement released after the match, PSG said the goalkeeper will have "medical examinations" on Thursday and will have to "rest for several days".
