Neither! Watkins not good value, Sesko great potential but unknown in Prem. Utd need proven striker given team ability currently. Mateta best option, younger than Watkins, proven over Sesko and more physical style of play to bring Cunha, Mbeumo, Fernandes etc into play rather than overloading channels.

Newcastle United are set to face a K League XI in the South Korean city of Suwon tomorrow, but all the narrative has been around striker Alexander Isak's future at the club.

The Sweden international has told the club he wants to explore his options for a move away this summer and is missing their pre-season tour of Asia.

It is understood some of Europe's top clubs have been aware Isak has been looking to take the next step in his career.

BBC Sport's Alex Howell reported this week that Liverpool are still interested in the 25-year-old, despite signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike for an initial £69m.

Isak, signed from Real Sociedad in August 2022 for around £60m, has a contract until June 2028. He scored 27 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle last season.

Sesko, as we’ve signed 2 players with Premier League experience so I was 50/50 but he just edged it because he’s a powerful runner with the ball and hunger

United should go for Watkins. They need experience and he is a proven prem striker. He won't cost an arm and a leg and he will be a good mentor for the likes of Zirkzee and Hojlund in the team. Will add value both on and off the pitch

Alexander Isak has become integral to Newcastle's recent success since joining the club from Real Sociedad in August 2022, scoring an impressive 62 goals in 109 appearances at an average of a one every 1.76 games.

Isak has netted 44 league goals across the past two seasons – 21 in 2023-24 and 23 last term – and with those numbers he has been rubbing shoulders with Europe's very best marksmen over the same time period (as shown in the below graphic).

The Sweden international also outperformed his xG by 3.3 during this spell, with his 44 strikes coming from an expected goals of 40.7.

Howe - We've recieved no formal offer for Isak

Eddie Howe says Newcastle are yet to receive a formal offer for Alexander Isak.

"We've received no formal offer from any football club for him," Howe said earlier today.

Liverpool, as we looked at a little earlier, could be one of the interested parties and could make a bid for Isak but who else could be in the running?

Arsenal have previously been credited with an interest, but have since signed fellow Swede Viktor Gyokeres.

Manchester City have the funds to go after Isak but are unlikely to pursue a transfer with Erling Haaland under a contract until 2034.

Chelsea have also added strikers Liam Delap and Joao Pedro to their squad this summer.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are prioritising Ollie Watkins and Benjamin Sesko if they are to go for a striker, leaving just Liverpool as a realistic destination inside the Premier League for Isak this summer.

  10. Will Liverpool bid for Isak?published at 09:51 British Summer Time 29 July

Most Premier League clubs cannot match Newcastle's reported £130m valuation of Alexander Isak, but Liverpool are among the few who could actually afford the prolific scorer.

The Premier League champions have already spent more than £250m this summer but their income has been boosted this year thanks to several factors, led by the £175m they received in prize money for winning the league.

Last season was also the club's first full campaign with a higher capacity stadium while a new kit deal with Adidas, which some reports value at £60m per season, will kick in from 1 August.

Combine that with comparatively low transfer spending in previous windows and Liverpool find themselves well within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules that limit clubs to losses of £105m over three years.

"Having massive global stars come and play at Anfield, filling out stadiums in Hong Kong and Japan, those are things we expect and want to do," Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan told the Athletic recently.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted the future of striker Alexander Isak is "not in my full control."

Howe was speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Suwon, where the Magpies face a K League XI in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

"He is still our player. He’s contracted to us," said Howe, when asked about Isak's situation.

"We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us.

"My wish is that he stays, but that’s not in my full control."

  14. Amorim's transfer warningpublished at 09:34 British Summer Time 29 July

Speaking over the weekend, Ruben Amorim made it clear that the club only want to sign players that are committed to playing for Manchester United and have shown a desire to move to Old Trafford.

"That is the key point. They have to want to come here," said Amorim."Sometimes you have a player with a lot of potential, you have to be aware of that, but all the players that are coming, we need to know the player. We need to talk to the player, we have to explain the project.

“If during the market we can find someone that can help the team and have all that boxes with them, we are going to do it. If not, we cannot do it because it's an important time in our club.”

  15. United cool Jackson interestpublished at 09:22 British Summer Time 29 July

Despite tentative interest earlier in the window, any move from Manchester United for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson now looks remote.

The Senegal forward has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge since the arrivals of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.

Given the scarcity of top strikers available, Jackson was a name widely linked with Old Trafford.

But Chelsea's reported £80m asking price for the 24-year-old was seen as excessive, while the club have opted to prioritise interest in Sesko and Watkins.

  18. How many goals did Watkins score last season?published at 08:59 British Summer Time 29 July

    Ollie WatkinsImage source, Getty Images

Last season Ollie Watkins scored 17 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions for Aston Villa and contributed with 14 assists. All but one of those goals came in the Premier League where he featured in every game for Unai Emery’s side.

The 29-year-old has racked up 223 appearances since joining the club from Brentford in 2020 and has a return of 87 goals and 42 assists.

In an England shirt, Watkins has made 18 appearances and has scored five goals - including that crucial winner against the Netherlands last summer to send England to the Euros final.

  19. Villa's financial balancing actpublished at 08:50 British Summer Time 29 July

    Unai EmeryImage source, Getty Images

The second fine looming over Aston Villa may relate to the cost of their squad but there is concern over bringing players in.

Unless they have a positive transfer balance by the end of the summer transfer window then they could be prevented from registering new players for Uefa competitions for the forthcoming season.

There have been just three incomings at Villa Park so far this summer which further suggest a tight management of their budget

    • Yasin Ozcan - from Kasimpasa - £5.9m
    • Zepiqueno Redmond - from Feyenoord - Free
    • Marco Bizot - from Brest - Undisclosed

There have been reports Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sell their women's team in order to comply with PSR - although this was not confirmed.

Now with a lack of Champions League football Unai Emery's side have lost out on a significant boost to their finances - and this is likely to severely impact their summer window.

  20. Do Villa have to sell?published at 08:40 British Summer Time 29 July

Aston Villa bet big on qualifying for the Champions League last season.

Unai Emery's side signed Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio on loan in January but their hopes of finishing in the top five were ended - ironically - by Manchester United on the final day of the season.

Villa have since been fined £9.5m by Uefa for failing to comply with their financial rules.

They face a further £12.9m fine if they fail to comply with Uefa's squad cost rules.

The club's wages-to-turnover ratio is believed to be around the 95% mark.
