I remember playing in the FA Cup Final for Everton against a fabulous Liverpool side many years ago. It was a boiling afternoon at the end of a hard season. As the clock edged toward the 90th minute, Liverpool released the brilliant, world class goal scorer Ian Rush from the bench, replacing that other great scorer John Aldridge. It felt unfair, almost like cheating. Unsurprisingly Rushy scored two in extra-time, winning them the trophy.

It must feel like that playing against Manchester City right now. Phil Foden destroys Aston Villa during the week with a stunning hat-trick and then he is left out against Crystal Palace. They replace him with Kevin de Bruyne however, who goes on to cut the Eagles apart with two brilliant goals and an assist. The depth of the squad is frightening.

I was at City’s last defeat against Aston Villa way back in December, a surprisingly lacklustre performance. They could however easily continue this current unbeaten run until the end of the season, they will probably have to if they are going to win the league. Then again if you can switch between De Bruyne and Foden it will surprise no one if they do it. It isn’t cheating, but it sure feels damned unfair when you are playing against it.

Manchester United have confirmed that footballer director John Murtough is leaving the club.

In a statement, the club said: "John Murtough is to step down from his position as Football Director of Manchester United and leave the club after almost 11 years in a variety of roles at Carrington.

"Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, said: “We want to thank John for his loyal service over many years, and for his support and integrity during this period of transition. He leaves with our best wishes for the future.”

Joel Glazer, co-chairman of Manchester United, said: “After 11 years of tireless work for the club, John has mutually agreed with us that now is the right time to step aside and allow the new football leadership structure to be put in place. He will always be welcome back at Manchester United as a friend of the club.”

The last time Arsenal played a Champions League quarter-final was back in 2010 when they lost to Barcelona.

Kai Havertz has gone from being perceived as the weak link in Arsenal's line-up by many to being the player who could make the difference for them at the critical point of the season.

The German has become Mikel Arteta's central figure in his dynamic attack.

With seven games to spare, Havertz now having his most prolific Premier League season to date and is regularly contributing assists as his relationships with team-mates continue to develop.

But while his goals are now seeing him hit the headlines, he is doing so much more than just put the ball in the net. Against Brighton, he created the most chances (four), won the most attacking aerial duels (two) and was the most fouled player (four).

Havertz will be an essential component if the Gunners are to get past Bayern Munich and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

His physicality, technical link-up play and experience in the competition make him a good spearhead for this team - and do not forget, he is still only 24.

The best is yet to come and, despite early scepticism, this looks like another masterstroke in the market from Edu and Arteta.

Brighton midfielder Jack Hinshelwood has signed a new contract which runs until June 2028.

Hinshelwood, 18, joined the Seagulls as an eight-year-old and has featured 17 times for the senior side this season.

Men's first-team head coach Roberto De Zerbi said, "I am very happy for Jack and for his family, he has shown what a top player he is and he deserves this new contract. We miss him a lot and are look forward to having him back fit and ready to play."

The England under-19 international made his Premier League debut on the last day of 2022-23.

Technical director David Weir said, “Jack is a role model and his journey is an inspiring one for all the players in our academy.

“His attitude on and off the pitch throughout his time at the club has been exemplary, the way he has transitioned into the first-team squad was impressive and we are all very proud of his progress.

“Were it not for injury he would have no doubt played a lot more first-team games this season, but we are looking forward to him being back ready for pre-season this summer."

My dad's all-time favourite Manchester City player was Irishman Peter Doherty, who starred for the Blues in the 1930s and 1940s.

Despite trying, I was never able to convince dad that my favourite, Colin Bell, was better than Doherty. And now my son is trying hard to convince me that Kevin de Bruyne is the greatest.

This is after De Bruyne scored his 100th City goal at the weekend, making him the first midfielder to achieve that feat since Bell 53 years ago.

Who will my grandchildren be proclaiming as the greatest of all time? It could be local lad Phil Foden, whose star continues to rise. He scored a hat-trick in midweek and he is having his best season ever.

Notwithstanding their versatilities and abilities to play various positions, both Foden and De Bruyne play at their best in the number 10 role.

Although it would need a tactical shift, I would love to see Pep Guardiola play them together in the middle at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter final on Tuesday.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri feels the team will have "more composure and serenity on the pitch" as the reigning European champions facing Real Madrid.

The two sides meet at the Bernabeu for the fourth time in four years when they play the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

Despite coming out on top in last season's semi-final, Rodri feels they cannot focus on that experience this time.

"We are going to face a different Real Madrid. Every season is different. We come here in some of the best shape right now for us this season," said the 27-year-old.

"We have proved ourselves every time we played against them. This is the fourth time and in all of them we had great results, and the ones where we didn't go through it was about 10 or 15 minutes [we lost it]. That's not something we have talked about.

"We are are a more mature team. We have experience of winning this competition and we come here with a different mentality and composure. I wish and hope the experience of winning the tournaments helps us do things right."

Rodri will come up against Real Madrid and England prodigy Jude Bellingham in tonight's encounter in a mouth-watering match-up.

Just eight teams remain in the Champions League - three from Spain, two from Germany, two from England and one from France.

Premier League duo Arsenal and Manchester City face Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively tonight.

On Wednesday, it's Atletico Madrid v Borussia Dortmund and Paris St-Germain v Barcelona.

Simon Gleave, head of analysis at Nielsen's Gracenote, using the Euro Club Index, external, has assessed the chances of each of those teams going all the way to lift the trophy at Wembley.

Gleave said: "The Champions League quarter-final draw has produced four closely-matched ties with no team given more than 59% chance of progressing to the semi-finals.

"Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are the favourites to go through according to our Euro Club Index.

"The odds suggest one or two 'surprise' semi-finalists. Manchester City are favourites to win the Champions League with a 31% chance of doing so, despite being drawn against the second best team in the competition for this round.

"Arsenal are fifth favourites because they will have to face the winners of City - Real in the semi-finals and both are ranked above them on our Euro Club Index."

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus says he cannot recall playing "without pain" as he tries to keep his mind "strong" to help his team.

The 27-year-old has struggled with a number of injuries since joining the Gunners in July 2022, but despite the lack of minutes has still scored 19 goals in 61 appearances.

The Brazil international will be hoping he can stay fit for a crucial part of the season as they fight for both the Premier League and Champions League.

Speaking before Tuesday's Champions League quarter final first leg against Bayern Munich, Jesus said: "After the World Cup I had that injury in my knee. My recovery was so good and then I had a setback in the pre-season.

"I came back and played three games in a row - and then again the knee. Then in training I had a kick on my knee - this kind of thing. People don't know this.

"I'm just trying to get fit and help Arsenal as much as I can. Unfortunately, I am having some problems this season. hopefully next season I don't have it.

"I don't remember the last day I played football without pain so I cannot complain. I am just trying to recover in a good way to be ready for next game. I try to keep strong in my mind to help the team and that is it."

With Arsenal facing their first match at this stage of the Champions League for 14 year, the former Manchester City forward feels he has a responsibility to use his previous experience to help the team.

"If they [team-mates] come to me, I tell them. If I see something I can help them with, I do.

"But they are not here kids any more. Everyone plays at the biggest stadiums - World Cup, Europe, Premier League. Everyone is here to help Arsenal - and if I can help, I will."
