Pep Guardiola is unsure whether to start Ederson in goal against Real Madrid in Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The Brazil international has not played since he was injured in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool on 10 March.

Instead, Stefan Ortega has been in goal for the last four games, keeping two clean sheets.

"I have to think about it. He [Ederson] feels good," said Guardiola.

"Now I have to decide if a lack of rhythm for that match, I have to decide, but we are really pleased with the [performance] from Stefan Ortega. He is an exceptional keeper."

Defenders Nathan Ake and Kyle Walker did not travel to Madrid for the game while Josko Gvardiol is a doubt after going off at half-time in the 4-2 win against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

I think playing 14-times CL winners Real should speak volumes about the difference in reputation. City are a force yes, but Real always seem to manage to come out on top in the CL, especially with Vini, Bellingham, Rudi, Valverde, and Camavinga! Tonight should be mega.

  3. Football director Murtough to leave Manchester Unitedpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 9 April

    BBC Sport

Manchester United football director John Murtough is set to leave the club.

United are set to make an official announcement, with Murtough, who came to Old Trafford in 2014, set to depart this week.

Murtough was particularly trusted by former executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Despite being criticised by many supporters for the club’s poor recruitment in recent years, Murtough had a good reputation inside Old Trafford and it is thought new co-owners Ineos were keen for him to stay until the end of the season.

However, it has been decided now is a better time for Murtough to go as new director Sir Dave Brailsford leads an overhaul of the club.

That is set to see the arrival of Jason Wilcox from Southampton as technical director, with Dan Ashworth moving into the sporting director role, although United are yet to agree the release of either man from their current club.

A bit earlier we told you about UEFA's decision to accept Real Madrid’s proposal to close the Bernabéu roof tonight for the 1st leg of the Champions League Quarter Final against Manchester City.

So will it make a difference?

Ramon Calderon, the former President of Real Madrid, has been talking to Sport Today on BBC World Service.

"Maybe. The noise is much higher. I think the players said in La Liga that it can make a difference because they feel much more the pressure of the fans and they see that the opponent is going to suffer from that pressure.

"But this stadium always does something miraculous for the team when playing Champions League. There is a communion between the people and the team, so the atmosphere will be the same as always, I don't think it's too much difference really."

Bayern Munich defender Eric Dier, who followed in Harry Kane's footsteps by leaving Tottenham for the German side in January, has been speaking to The Overlap podcast with strong claims that he should be part of Gareth Southgate's plans for the Euros.

"I want to be a part of the England set-up and I believe that I should be a part of it, that I'm that level of a player," said Dier.

"I'm playing the best football of my career since (Antonio) Conte came (to manage Tottenham in 2021) and I've carried it on since.

"People think that I'm 37 or something, but I'm 30 years old and am nowhere near the end of my prime and imagine that this will be my prime."

Dier has 49 England caps but has not played since their World Cup last-16 win over Senegal in December 2022.

He is part of Bayern's squad for tonight's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal at the Emirates.

  6. Kane having big 'impact' at Bayernpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 9 April

Matt Upson is probably best known for his time at West Ham but he did make 57 appearance for Arsenal between 1997 and 2003.

The former defender retired in 2016 and is can often be found behind the microphone, he'll be part of the 5 Live Sport team covering tonight's Champions League tie between Arsenal at Bayern Munich.

Upson joined 5 Live Breakfast this morning to look ahead to the game and he was inevitably asked about Bayern hitman Harry Kane.

“Somebody that’s just gone over to a different league, different country and you know, what an impact he’s had for Bayern Munich," Upson said.

"Already chasing a record scoring season with goals. I think it’s Robert Lewandowski who’s got 41 and he’s on 32 in the Bundesliga. Which for a team which isn’t performing at its very best, is just incredible and I always think he’s going to be a constant threat. And obviously a player that Arsenal are going to have to keep a close eye on."

Kane has scored 14 goals in 19 previous appearances against Arsenal - all of those strikes coming during his time at Tottenham.

Upson added: "He obviously takes a lot of penalties, but no one can deny that his instinct and finishing ability and what Mikel Arteta said there was true, in terms of he scores all types of goals.

"Amazing goals, outside the box, in the box, headers… every array of goal you can imagine, he scores them, which makes him so all-rounded.”

  7. 'This is the new Arsenal'published at 13:50 British Summer Time 9 April

Former Chelsea and Everton winger Pat Nevin, writing for the BBC Football Extra newsletter: There is an old adage in football, good defences win you titles. With the free scoring of Manchester City and Liverpool in recent years the phrase has fallen slightly out of favour, but should it?

Top of the table Arsenal have scored the most Premier League goals so far, but they have also conceded the fewest. In five of the last six seasons, the team that shipped the fewest goals has won the league. The outlier was when City won it conceding a single goal more than just one other team, that was Liverpool who were second.

Being miserly in defence is as a good a marker as scoring the most goals and Arsenal have clearly learned this, or re-learned it. It used to be their stock in trade during their old ‘Invincibles’ days.

There are a few ‘tells’ that you can see this season. First is their nastiness at corners against. They fight, grab, bully and snarl every time at every opponent. This is the new Arsenal, happy to add ugly defending to their beautiful flowing attacks.

The muscular clean sheet defensive performance at the Etihad was a classic example and another came against Brighton at the weekend.

Three-nil up in the 91st minute, it wasn’t just Gabriel’s goal-saving, body-on-the-line block that was so impressive, it was the way he and his team-mates celebrated it. If you thought soft Arsenal were just about to crumble like last season this was the definitive answer.

Arsenal in past in this competition would be completely open and blast out of traps, and against some teams that intensity was too much, but in later stages the top teams brutally exposed that naivety. This Arsenal team, even without recent CL experience, is far more measured and consistent in approach and expect them to show just how far they have developed tonight. You realise how much more you miss these types of games when been on outside looking in for so long.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola believes Real Madrid will be determined to get revenge after they thrashed the Spanish giants on their way to winning last season's Champions League.

City beat Real 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

However, Guardiola has no doubt the 14-time winners will pose a tough test when they step out at the Bernabeu in Tuesday's quarter-final first leg in Madrid (20:00 BST).

"It is very difficult for the same thing to happen again," Guardiola said.

"Beating Real Madrid twice in a row is impossible. They have learned and will want revenge. They have pride."

I don’t see City winning tonight (not even a draw). With all their defensive problems & injuries as well as playing at the Bernabéu, they don’t stand a chance against Madrid. They have to limit the damage tonight and then find a way to win next week at home.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti wants his side to show more mental strength than they did when the two sides met last season.

After a 1-1 draw in Madrid, Manchester City thrashed Real in the second leg 4-0.

"We played without courage, without personality," said Ancelotti. "Courage and personality are fundamental in this type of game, we lacked them in the second leg.

"The important thing is to be at our best, the mental aspect is very important."

Arsenal v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

Despite Bayern Munich's Bundesliga troubles, England captain Harry Kane still has one of the best records in Europe.

Kane is joint top of the Champions League scorers chart this season with six goals in eight matches, a feat matched by Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann - and he also has a very good record against Arsenal, with 14 goals in 19 games for Spurs.

Nobody across Europe's top five leagues has scored more top-flight goals than his 32 this campaign.

The Gunners' striker Gabriel Jesus said that Kane is "the best finisher in the world" but captain Martin Odegaard added that they will not fear him.

"He's a good player, we know his quality in the box," said Odegaard.

"I think we should respect him but I don't think we should fear anyone and we should focus on ourselves."

Security is to be stepped up at Champions League games after a media outlet supporting Islamic State group published threats against venues.

Uefa said it was aware of the threats but said games in Madrid, Paris and London would go ahead as planned.

Ministers in both France and Spain have confirmed enhanced security measures.

A pro-IS media channel has published multiple posters calling for attacks at stadiums featured in games due to be held this week.

Uefa have accepted Real Madrid's proposal to close the roof at the Bernabeu for tonight's Champions League quarter-final first leg tie against Manchester City.

Real fans are also set to display a 360 degree Tifo prior to kick-off as they look to ramp up the atmosphere and make it a hostile cauldron.

Real Madrid also had the roof shut when they played out a 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig in the second leg of their last 16 tie on 6 March.

  16. 'We haven't had this opportunity in 15 years'published at 13:04 British Summer Time 9 April

Arsenal v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

The last time Arsenal played a Champions League quarter-final was in 2010, where they lost 6-3 on aggregate to Barcelona.

A certain Lionel Messi haunted the Gunners that day with four goals in the second leg at the Nou Camp.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says the long wait adds to the occasion of tonight's encounter at the Emirates.

"I'm expecting full house and a lot of passion and emotion," said Arteta.

"We haven't had this opportunity for 15 years so that tells you how special this night is going to be for us. We are going to have put everything into every ball to make it happen."

Arteta described Bayern Munich as an "exceptional team" and that he is not thinking about the favourites tag that has been placed on Arsenal.

"They are a top team. I am a big admirer of Thomas [Tuchel]. The way his teams set up, the way they play, the way they transmit. I have learned a lot from him.

"We have prepared well and now we have to take our game where we want to. If we do that we have a chance to win."

Manchester City fan Emily Brobyn has made the trip to Spain to be in the Bernabeu for tonight's Champions League quarter-final tie against Real Madrid.

Emily admitted the nerves are already starting to kick in when she spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast this morning.

"Very nervous, I have to admit," Emily said.

"I do feel quite confident coming here but I feel like it’s a meeting of an unstoppable force versus an immovable object. The buzzword seems to be ‘revenge ‘ doesn’t it, from Real Madrid’s corner.

“After they came to the Etihad, they’ve been talking about the atmosphere and unbelievably how intimidating it was given the fact that we get so many pelters for our lack of atmosphere, but they’re talking about making this big wall of white at the Bernabeu tonight. They’re closing the roof.

"I heard all this and I thought to myself: is this how scared they are of City? Is this Real Madrid, 14-time winners, running a little bit scared of City because they know what happened in the Champions League?

"I kind of laughed to myself and thought, I can’t believe we’re in a situation where Real Madrid are gathering all the fans together and thinking ‘we need to do this to try and help us beat City’.

“I’m nervous but I know that if we bring it and we play our game. Pep [Guardiola] said, we have to go there, not just to control the game, we have to score goals, we have to punish them.

"They sound so up for it and so focused. We’ve got to gout there and prove why we are European champions.”
