More from Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on the progress made by his side: "We are still at the beginning of what we are trying to build and there’s been progress made in some areas and there’s more work to do in other areas. We’ve had a lot of challenges like injures that have hindered a consistent line. That happens to every football cub and we need to work our way through it."

On Cristian Romero: "I thought he was good last night, he gave everything. It's good to get him back, it gives us security back there. He is one of the strong figures out there which we will need in this period. There are some tough times ahead, he’ll help steer us through that."

  4. Bad results help you to understand - Peppublished at 13:22 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Luton v Man City (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is trying to find the positives from the current below-par sequence of results.

Only once before during Guardiola's stellar time at the club have City gone four Premier League games without a win.

After winning five titles in six seasons - and an historic Treble last season - the current form has come as a shock.

Guardiola feels there could be some benefit.

"Bad results help you to understand how hard what we have done was and how hard the future will be," he said.

More from Pep Guardiola on Kevin de Bruyne, who has been named as part of the squad travelling to the Club World Cup: "He’s started to run on the pitch but he’s not training with us. It will be too early I think but I don’t know yet.

"He is so important. I don’t want to put pressure on him, he’ll be back when he’s ready but we’ll have open arms when he is.

"I have to find a way when he’s not here to survive."

    Aston Villa

More from Aston Villa manager Unai Emery on recovering from Wednesday's win over Manchester City and preparing to face Arsenal on Saturday: "We had to rest a lot - we played on Sunday and last Thursday as well. The players are at the beginning [of their preparation] so I do not have all the information on some injuries. It is going to be very important, the last day [of preparation] and tomorrow for all players to tell me physically and emotionally how they are for tomorrow."

On the experience his players are building: "We are adding with some players experience - experience of playing in Europe and experience of playing a lot of matches. Come Saturday we will have played four matches in 10 days. This is practice for them as well."

  7. 'We have to be happy and focussed'published at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Aston Villa v Arsenal (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Aston Villa

Shall we add Aston Villa manager Unai Emery into the mix as well? Why not.

Here is a word from the Spaniard on rising above defending champions Manchester City, moving up to third in the Premier League table, following Wednesday's 1-0 victory at Villa Park: "[Qualifying for the Champions League with a top four finish] of course is a big motivation for us. Every place now is important for us [but it does not matter now]. When, if we can wait until game 30 or 32, if we are in the top four then maybe then we can think we are can be contenders to be there.

"For now we have to be happy and focussed. The match on Wednesday is finished, we had a great time in front of our fans, but we now have to focus 100% on tomorrow [against Arsenal].

"It is a big challenge, a great moment, but we are very focussed on the work we have to do for tomorrow."

  8. We 'lack consistency and creativity'published at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Luton Town v Man City (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

On whether the absence of Rodri has affected his midfield, Pep Guardiola said: "Rodri is important definitely, but it’s too simplistic to say it’s just that.

"There are many factors, but there’s lack of consistency in our process which has made a lack of creativity. We haven’t had that feeling of we’re going to break or create chances."

  9. Teams have 'struggled to win' against Lutonpublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Luton Town v Man City (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

On Sunday's opponents Luton Town, Pep Guardiola said: "They're tough to go against and top teams have struggled to win against them.

"It will be a challenge. We have to keep pushing and working. They’re a team made of really good things and we have to try and break them down."

  10. 'Front third has a lot of work to do' - Postecogloupublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Tottenham v Newcastle (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on his side's recent performances: "Like I said in other games, it’s to take advantage of the dominance we have in games and we’re not and that’s keeping oppositions in the game and especially in the second half, we had a couple of defensive lapses, which a team like West Ham will punish you.

"The football, for it to be brilliant, has got to be there in it’s entirety. I still think our front third has a lot of work to do and unfortunately that’s costing us at the moment in terms of results. But that’s the challenge for us, we’ve got to keep pushing on and trying to become better in those areas."

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on the fitness of Kevin de Bruyne, who has been struggling with a thigh injury after limping out of the opening game of the Premier League season: "I think he has started to run on the pitch but he didn't train once with us. The Club World Cup is in what, two weeks? So it is maybe a bit early for Kevin, but I don't know.

"Kevin is so important but unfortunately he had a tough injury at the beginning, three or four months he is still recovering so don't put any pressure on him."

  12. All I am interested in is winning - Postecogloupublished at 12:41 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said after his side's defeat to West Ham on Thursday that he is not interested in just playing well.

“This is about winning games. All I am interested in is winning," the Australian coach told press after the game.

Thursday's home defeat was Spurs' fourth loss in five games. It was also the fifth consecutive game where they have dropped points from a winning position.

"1-0 at half time was not a good performance by us," Postecoglou said, adding, "A good one would have been 4-0 up and put it to bed and when you don’t, you give up goals you shouldn’t. We are going through a spell where we are playing so-called good football but I don’t see that."

We will hear more from the Spurs boss in a moment.

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

On the importance of defender Virgil van Dijk, Jurgen Klopp said: "It always was and it always will be. Virgil is the best defender in the world.

"Did he have lesser good spells? Yes. If you show me someone that never has, I will be really happy to meet him. Nobody is perfect, nobody will ever be. Virgil in shape for us is super super important."

  17. 'We're playing more positive football again'published at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

On the progress Liverpool are making, Jurgen Klopp said: "For that we have to talk about schedule and where we want to be in December.

"I'm just happy with the development up until this point. We had to replace a few of the strongest characters in world football and we did that with a few of the strongest characters in world football. We have experienced world class footballers so that’s helpful with the real understanding of a team dynamic, it all helps.

"That’s why we are where we are, I'm not sure it’s a surprise. I'm happy we can show the right signs. We play much more positive football again, that comes with confidence, confidence comes with results, results comes with good performances, good performances comes with a good pre-season. All teams are probably only two injuries away from a real problem. Lot of football, a lot of opportunities."

  18. 'We just prepare for the next game'published at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

On a potentially thrilling battle for top four, Jurgen Klopp said: "I couldn’t be less interested in that but it looks unusual that [Manchester] City aren’t at the top of the table with 10 points between first and second, but that’s how it is.

"Arsenal are doing extremely well, we are doing not too bad, Aston Villa are super strong with a pretty impressive performance last game, United, I'm not following it really, nobody’s 100% happy but they’re around, Newcastle’s there, Tottenham if they won last night they are there.

"What can I say, you can only can beat anybody in the games we play with consistency and so far that looks alright, maybe we could have had more points but we don’t, so that’s where we are. That’s ok we aren’t celebrating, we just prepare for the next game and try to be ready again."

  19. Hodgson is 'outstanding' - Klopppublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Roy Hodgson: "When Roy was in Switzerland, he implemented 4-4-2, my former manager showed a lot of videos of him. That was the first time he crossed my way, so I'm really pleased I met him in the Premier league.

"He's an outstanding person and a really nice man. When I see him I ask him, what are you still doing here? But he looks happy, he enjoys it, I couldn’t respect it more. He was my inspiration but he doesn’t inspire me to work the job that long. Great guy."

  20. 'I don't feel that kind of pressure' - Klopppublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on his side moving to the top of the table if they win on Saturday: "With playing in the Europa League, you're [normally] on the other side of that. I can say we ignore the results of other teams because we play Thursday and then Sunday, when everybody played on Saturday or whatever, so usually they already won their games.

"I don’t feel that kind of pressure from other teams, we want to win our games and Arsenal doesn’t need extra pressure, they play Aston Villa so that’s enough job to do.

"We have a job to do against Crystal Palace and we’ll be 100% focused on that, that’s what we are and what we will be.

"I have no clue who plays on Sunday, but I will lie on the sofa on Sunday afternoon and watch football games and see what they do, more out of interest if we play them.

"No-one became champion by being at the top of the table on Saturday at 2.15pm or whatever on match day 16. But we need the points, we want to go for them and that’s what we prepare for in the short space of time."
