On Sunday's opponents Tottenham, Eddie Howe said: "Tottenham have done very well this season so it’s going to be a big test for us.

"We need a response and I think that will be very much on our minds. We have to put this game to bed and be ready to go again."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Joel Matip, who has suffered a serious knee injury and is out of contract in the summer: "I’m pretty sure the club will show its class, just how they should do it. I'm pretty sure the club told him that whatever happens. We have to make the decision together with Joel on how it looks after his injury, but it’s a normal thing to do. He deserves all the support from us and he will get it."

On whether Matip will be offered a new contract:"I will say so, but it's not my decision on it. I cannot sign the papers."

On team news: "Allison looks good but I don’t know if he will be good enough for tomorrow, we have to check that with the medical department and Alison himself of course.

"Alexis Mac Allister doesn't look good, so we have to see day by day. We were hopeful after the game that it's not serious, we have to wait to see how he shows up here today, I don’t expect him to be ready tomorrow. It’s stop and go, well have to see.

"Alison is back in training since yesterday."

  3. 'We desperately need those injured players back'published at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Tottenham v Newcastle (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking before Sunday's match at Tottenham, on the club's ongoing injury crisis: "Our squad is stretched and I’ve said that many times.

"The same XI are having to go again and again and they’ve done well for us. Ideally, [during Thursday's 3-0 defeat at Everton] I’d have been looking to the bench to freshen us up, but those options weren’t there. I have to compliment the players who have played but mentally we weren’t at our best.

"We’re used to the rhythm of playing and resting, then playing again but we desperately need help, we desperately need those injured players back.

"The amount of injuries has been concerning for us because the ability to rotate and make changes hasn’t been there. So then you have the risk of fatigued players.

"That’s not an excuse, it’s just reality and we’re having to deal with that."

  4. Defeat by Everton was 'an opportunity missed' - Howepublished at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    Everton 3-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

"In the first half, I thought the game was there for us to take and show our dominance but we lacked authority on the ball," said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, immediately after Thursday night's 3-0 defeat at Everton.

"Everton play a certain way and made it difficult for us. They put us under pressure but we were well in the game."

Howe has been back speaking to the media again as he now looks forward to Sunday's match at Tottenham.

We will hear more from him shortly.

  5. Mac Allister out, Alisson back in trainingpublished at 11:37 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp started with some team news.

He confirmed that Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker was back in training but does not know if he will be fit to play against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Klopp did not have as encouraging news about Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who suffered a gash to his leg in Wednesday's 2-0 win at Sheffield United.

"It doesn't look good. I don't expect him to be ready for tomorrow," said the Liverpool boss. "I don't know about Thursday yet or next Sunday [at home to Manchester United]."

There has been many greats to pick from but for me it’s got to be Ronaldinho Gaucho. Forget trophies and personal achievements, this man is a definition of a player who is passionate and enjoys the game. He spent more time smiling than running during matches... yet when he did something, it was pretty unexpected, more often than not.

My football hero has to be the ice man himself Dennis Bergkamp. Exquisite goal scorer and masterful with a pass. Fitting that his testimonial opened the Emirates Stadium. An absolute legend.

Amid all the chat about the 12:30 GMT kick-off, Liverpool have a match to play away at Crystal Palace early on Saturday.

If they win they could move top of the Premier League, albeit temporarily depending on Arsenal’s result against Aston Villa in the 17:30 GMT game on Saturday.

That would be some sign of progress considering their struggles last season, when they finished fifth in the top flight, and the subsequent changes to the squad in the summer.

However, while the Reds have won 10 of their last 12 games against Palace, the two of those that they didn’t win were last season - when both matches between the two teams finished in draws.

We will soon find out what Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp makes of the challenge they’ll face at Palace.

My footballing hero was Socrates. The way he played, the way he read the game and it was also my first kit as a boy.

I was a very proud owner of a yellow Brazil shirt with light blue trousers and Socrates was my childhood hero.

  10. Don’t joke about the 12:30 kick-off slotpublished at 11:04 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Mandeep Sanghera
    BBC Sport

Jurgen Klopp didn’t take too kindly when, after his side’s 2-0 win at Sheffield United on Wednesday night, a television presenter joked about Liverpool again playing at 12:30 GMT on a Saturday.

The Reds are away at Crystal Palace in the early slot this weekend in what will be the fourth occasion they have played at that time so far this season.

On the three previous occasions, Liverpool have beaten Wolves and Everton as well as drawn at Manchester City.

The game at City on 25 November took place after the international break and Klopp’s annoyance with that kick-off time will not have been helped by keeper Alisson Becker and forward Diogo Jota being absent since getting injured in that match.

We’ll see if he has anything to say about the early kick-off issue when he chats to the media in a moment.

Jurgen Klopp isn’t talking about a title challenge from his side and has said he can revisit the issue depending on where his side are in April.

You can see where he is coming from as we enter such a hectic time in the football calendar and the injuries start to mount up for the Reds boss.

Joel Matip was the latest to be ruled out of action, with the centre-back facing the prospect of missing the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

He joins long-term absentees Andy Robertson, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajectic on the sidelines for the club.

Keeper Alisson Becker and forward Diogo Jota are also out with hamstring issues but, while they are unlikely to be fit to face Crystal Palace on Saturday, the hope is that they should be back soon.

On top of that, Alexis Mac Allister suffered a cut to his knee from a challenge in Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Sheffield United on Wednesday and we should get the latest on him and the others when Klopp chats to the press this morning.

From David Moyes in London we are going to quickly transport you up to Merseyside, where we expect to soon hear from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

BBC Sport's Mandeep Sanghera has been assessing some of the main talking points we expect to be covered in his news conference...

  13. Fabianski was 'excellent'published at 10:52 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Fulham v West Ham (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    West Ham United

A final word from David Moyes on goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who came in for Alphonse Areola due to injury: "Fabianski is a superb goalkeeper and has been for years and years here.

"I wasn’t surprised at how well he played and how comfortable he was coming in. He was excellent, he really was."

  14. West Ham team newspublished at 10:49 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    West Ham United

On the latest team news following last night's match, David Moyes said: "No team news to give out yet.

"We’re reporting in so early, so we’re waiting for them to check in and we’ll find out in the next few hours."

  15. Fulham have 'become a strong Premier League team'published at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Fulham v West Ham (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    West Ham United

West Ham's next opponents Fulham beat Nottingham Forest 5-0 at Craven Cottage on Wednesday after a narrow 4-3 defeat at Liverpool last weekend.

David Moyes said: "I think they are a very good team. They’ve come into a bit of form as well and they have a very good manager.

"Every game in the Premier League is hard. They scored three against Liverpool and five midweek against Forest.

"Whatever they’re doing they’re getting it right and they’ve become a strong Premier League team. Marco Silva has done a great job getting them up and stabilising them.

"They are becoming more of a regular Premier League club and they’ve been competitive."

  16. Bowen 'has always scored goals'published at 10:36 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Fulham v West Ham (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    West Ham United

On the versatility of Jarrod Bowen, who has scored in each of his past seven Premier League away games, David Moyes said: "I think he can play the centre-forward position well, I've thought that for a few years.

"Jarrod has always scored goals, even when he was at Hull before he came here. He’s scored a lot of goals coming off wide areas, but I think he has showed he can play centrally as well.

"There are games we will play him wide and there are games where we will play him as a centre-forward.

"We're really pleased he got another goal away from home. If he keeps these numbers up then hopefully by the end of the season, he'll have a big number of goals."

  17. 'Possession doesn’t necessarily get you the win'published at 10:31 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

Fulham v West Ham (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    West Ham United

Right, as promised, let's hear from David Moyes, starting with more thoughts on last night's 2-1 win over Tottenham, which the Hammers pulled off despite only having 25% of the possession: "It was a huge win for us. Tottenham are one of the top teams and have been playing exceptionally well, so for us to go and get the win was exceptional.

"Possession doesn’t necessarily get you the win. It’s better if you do have it, but we found a way to get the result.

"All credit to the players, they did a really good job."

  18. Impact of missing players has been 'huge' - Kellypublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    Stephen Kelly
Former Tottenham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

A few things have happened [at Spurs] - coinciding injuries to James Maddison, Micky van de Ven. They’ve been in games, they’ve been close, but it’s just giving up silly goals again last night [and also] poor goals against City [in Sunday's 3-3 draw].

Even though we got a decent result at the Etihad, again it’s just giving up poor goals. It’s the mistakes that have crept into the defence that weren’t there before. We looked so solid, so it’s about rectifying them but I do think the impact of players missing on the pitch has been huge.

  19. 'It was self-inflicted' - Postecogloupublished at 10:22 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was understandably frustrated by the defeat to West Ham - after seeing his side drop points for a fifth consecutive game after taking the lead.

"If you dominate a game of football, you have to turn it into something meaningful and we didn't," said Postecoglou.

"We lacked conviction with our chances and conceded two soft goals. It was self inflicted."

  20. Win at Spurs is 'huge' - Moyespublished at 10:16 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2023

    Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

    West Ham United

"We played a hugely talented Tottenham team but the players have done a really good job," said David Moyes after West Ham's win at Tottenham.

"We have really good players who can play on the break and take the ball."
