Summary

  1. What’s the latest on Jakobsson?published at 12:45 British Summer Time 9 September

BBC Sport senior women's football reporter

The biggest move we’re anticipating in the Women’s Championship is London City Lionesses’ pursuit of Sweden’s Sofia Jakobsson.

The second tier club, owned by businesswoman Michele Kang, has already made some huge signings this summer and this would be another one.

They were hoping to sign Jakobsson in time for Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle, which kickstarted their season, but instead prioritised bringing in Sheffield United’s Izzy Goodwin for a league record fee.

It means their squad cap is currently full. They need to de-register some players in order to bring Jakobsson in. Those are the working parts they are getting on with this week.

They are close - everything is agreed between the parties - but London City need movement to happen.

  2. What’s the latest on Keira Walsh?published at 12:40 British Summer Time 9 September

There is nothing new to report from where we have been for about 18 months regarding Keira Walsh - but that could change.

Barcelona midfielder Walsh is one of the best players in the world so it’s natural clubs will monitor her status.

Arsenal have been doing that for some time, while Chelsea have always been poised should the opportunity arise.

That opportunity might come this week.

Walsh has a year remaining on her Barcelona contract and after winning every trophy on offer in Spain, is believed to be open to a move back to the WSL.

Barcelona want to renew her contract but would also be open to talks should the right offer come in.

Everyone is poised for Chelsea or Arsenal to potentially make a move this week. If they did, it would force Barcelona into a late decision.

Until then, it’s business as usual. But one to keep an eye on…

As Emma Sanders mentioned earlier, this is a big week for sides in England's Women's Super League, with the summer transfer window drawing to a close.

Champions Chelsea then kick off the league fixtures with a match at home to Aston Villa on Friday, 20 September.

That, of course, means those clubs involved in Champions League qualifying will play the opening ties of their second-round qualifiers (18/19 September) before the start of the league programme.

  4. British sides start with away ties in WCL qualifierspublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 9 September

So all three British sides in the second round of qualifying for the Women's Champions League will play the opening matches of the two-legged ties away from home.

Arsenal went out at this stage last season, losing over two legs to Paris FC, who will this year be facing Manchester City.

The Gunners, who won the Women's Champions League in 2007 and remain the only British winners of the competition, face Swedish side BK Hacken.

Gothenburg-based BK Hacken were knocked out by Paris St-Germain in the quarter-finals last season after finishing second behind Chelsea in their group.

Celtic, meanwhile, face Ukrainian opposition after beating Lithuanian hosts Gintra 2-0 in the last phase of qualifying.

  5. Second-round qualifying draw for WCLpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 9 September

The draw has been made for the second round of qualifying in the Women's Champions League.

Here are the ties involving English and Scottish sides:

    • Vorskla Poltava v Celtic
    • Paris FC v Manchester City
    • BK Hacken v Arsenal

The first matches of the two-legged ties will be played on Wednesday or Thursday, September 18 or 19, with the return legs the following week, September 25 or 26 September.

Winners will take the final 12 places in the group stage of this season's Champions League, joining reigning champions Barcelona, along with Chelsea, Lyon and Bayern Munich, who qualified as league champions of England, France and Germany, respectively.

  6. 'Liverpool cannot afford to lose any' - McNulty on Salah, Van Dijk or TAApublished at 12:12 British Summer Time 9 September

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Pat, Watford: Quickfire triple question to Phil…firstly, in your opinion, do you think Lee Carsley has got it in his locker to lead England to a World Cup win with this young and talented team? Secondly, do you think that Liverpool tying up Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah contracts will be a more important piece of business than not spending much during transfer window? Thirdly, do you think Cristiano Ronaldo will get to 1,000 goals in his career?

Phil: Hi, Pat. Very early days to say that – or even if Lee Carsley will be the manager at the next World Cup – but he certainly has got lots of fine young talent at his disposal and his first squad suggests he fully intends to use it, so we shall see.

In answer to your Liverpool question, yes I do think it is more important. We are talking three proven world-class players who are central to the club’s success now and in the future. Liverpool simply cannot afford to lose any of them.

And Ronaldo? My own gut feeling is that 1,000 will be just beyond him but this is Cristiano Ronaldo we are talking about. You only had to see his reaction to scoring against Scotland to see the fire still burns fiercely. Never rule anything out with him.

  7. Nations League 'adding an extra layer of competition'published at 12:01 British Summer Time 9 September

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Dave, Tunbridge Wells: Hi Phil. The Nations League has been going on for a few years now. Do you think it has been good for the international game? Do all countries and players take it seriously?

Phil: Hello, Dave. I certainly think it’s getting there. I went to the first finals in Porto and while it grabbed the imagination in Portugal, and it did help that they won, it still felt a bit like glorified friendlies.

I think there is still an element of that but I genuinely think it is adding an extra layer of competition, which was the initial intention.

  8. 'Carsley is clearly determined to do things his way'published at 11:54 British Summer Time 9 September

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Nick: Eyup Phil, do you see any similarities between Carsley and Southgate in terms of their respective starts as England manager? I'm also curious to hear your thoughts on whether Carsley will avoid the issues which plagued his predecessor.

Phil: Hi, Nick. Apologies for fence-sitting but I just think it is too early to make these sort of judgements. I do like what I have seen from Lee Carsley so far, though. He is clearly determined to do things his way, from the injection of young players he knows well into his first squad to a positive, decisive team selection which brought good performances from players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jack Grealish and Anthony Gordon.

  9. Postpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 9 September

Robin questioned earlier whether Lee Carsley would be "brave enough to drop Harry Kane" should his form and goal tally tail off.

One of Gareth Southgate's early challenges, when he made the step up from Under-21s boss to senior men's head coach, was managing the end of Wayne Rooney's international career.

He did that with aplomb, handling a player, who at that time was England's all-time leading goalscorer, with great sensitivity...

  10. 'I still feel England’s future will be built around Bellingham'published at 11:40 British Summer Time 9 September

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Jude Bellingham and Jack GrealishImage source, Getty Images

@sussexbythesea4 on 'X': What is the best position for Jack Grealish in the England team?

Phil: It was really interesting to see Lee Carsley play him as a number “10” and we can certainly say it was a success, albeit against a struggling Republic Of Ireland side.

It was also a game where Carsley did not have Jude Bellingham at his disposal, so the picture will become clearer when he is fit again.

I still feel England’s future will be built around Bellingham as the “10” so maybe Jack will be out on the left flank, although Anthony Gordon staked his claim on Saturday as well and of course we must factor in great talents such as Phil Foden and Cole Palmer.

What is good to see is Grealish looking rejuvenated and motivated after (or perhaps by) his exclusion from England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Talking about England's key players, coming up is Phil McNulty's take on Jack Grealish returning as a "10" and whether he can challenge for the position on a more regular basis...

  12. England men's centurionspublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 9 September

    England

That's it for the live stream now.

Good to see Harry Kane out there with his golden boots on.

The England captain has returned to the international fold following the Euros with renewed vigour, seemingly free of the niggles that affected his performances in Germany.

He is set to become the 10th men's player to reach 100 caps.

Here's a list of those who have achieved that feat:

    Peter Shilton – 125

    Wayne Rooney – 120

    David Beckham – 115

    Steven Gerrard – 114

    Bobby Moore – 108

    Ashley Cole – 107

    Sir Bobby Charlton – 106

    Frank Lampard – 106

    Billy Wright – 105

  13. Cole takes his place in the 'rondo'published at 11:22 British Summer Time 9 September

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at England training

As usual before most training sessions, the England team got into the ‘rondo’ - the passing drill where two players in the middle try to get the ball from those on the outside of the circle.

Ashley Cole, the interim assistant coach and former England full-back, was joining in with this part. He lost the ball and was in the middle, trying to get it back, which the players were enjoying.

There's a photographer present who was just snapping a few pictures of Morgan Gibbs-White. He looks like he has settled in nicely.

The players went on to a bit of ball-work. Carsley was pacing around, clipboard clutched under his arm.

If Lee Carsley is given the chance to stay as England manager, will he be brave enough to drop Harry Kane? Last performance he wasn't leading the team, more like the rest of the team are carrying him.

    Robin

Well that's one opinion Robin, which you are entitled to. Others might point to Harry Kane's position as England's all-time leading goalscorer, with 66 goals from 99 appearances, as proof of his worth to the team.

  19. Kane to earn 100th cap against Finland - FApublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 9 September

    England

Harry Kane is set to earn his 100th England cap on Tuesday night against Finland.

In a statement, the FA said he will captain the Three Lions. They will pay tribute to Kane before the Nations League clash and present him with a gold cap.

He is the 10th player to reach this milestone, the last England player to do so was Wayne Rooney in 2014.
