Northern Ireland's strong run of form came to an end with a frustrating 1-0 Nations League defeat by Bulgaria in Plovdiv.

Kiril Despodov was gifted the opening goal in the 40th minute when Aleksandar Kolev latched on to a loose pass by goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell and he squared the ball for the Bulgarian captain to touch home.

Northern Ireland travelled to Bulgaria off the back of a solid win over Luxembourg in their Nations League opener on Thursday, which was their fourth victory in six matches.

But Michael O'Neill's side struggled to get to grips with the game on a difficult pitch and stifling heat in Plovdiv as the the hosts also hit the post twice in the first half.

Northern Ireland improved after the restart but could not find an equaliser against a stern Bulgarian defence.

The result, along with Belarus' 1-0 win in Luxembourg, leaves Northern Ireland third in Group C3 after two matches.

  3. Portugal beat Scotland with Ronaldo's 901st career goalpublished at 07:11 British Summer Time 9 September

Cristiano Ronaldo’s late Nations League winner broke Scotland hearts in Portugal and ensured Steve Clarke's side's dreadful run of form continued.

The visitors took a shock seventh-minute lead thanks to a Scott McTominay header and performed admirably in repelling Portugal’s 16 shots before the break.

Another individual error robbed them of the lead though, when Angus Gunn allowed Bruno Fernandes’ long-range strike to creep into the net after the break.

Ronaldo was introduced at half-time and twice hit a post before finally breaking the barricades, forcing in a delicious Nuno Mendes cross for his 901st career goal.

The defeat - after losing to Poland on Thursday - means Scotland are now without a win in their last eight competitive games, the worst run in their history, and have won just one of the last 14 games.

    Hope you enjoyed your weekend.

Lee Carsley certainly did. After guiding England to victory over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, the Three Lions' interim manager now says he feels more confident in his ability to take on the job permanently.

We will bring you all the latest on that story, as well as news from England training later this morning, before finishing this afternoon with Carsley's news conference ahead of his Wembley bow against Finland on Tuesday.

Phil McNulty - BBC Sport's chief football writer - will also be dropping in from around 09:30 BST to take your questions on the latest round of international matches, which include Craig Bellamy's second match in charge of Wales in Montenegro tonight.

Before that, we will have news and reaction from Sunday night's games, as both Scotland and Northern Ireland fell to narrow defeats away from home - against Portugal and Bulgaria, respectively.
