Scotland manager Steve Clarke on taking the positives from defeat to Portugal: "Obviously disappointed to lose, but it looked for a long period of time like we would get something from the game.

"Really disappointed for my players - after the effort and quality they put into the game, they deserved to get something from it.

"We reiterated to the players that they have to understand what part of the cycle we are in, what we are trying to do. We are trying to readjust a little bit after the summer. We can use these matches to try to build and the end goal is always qualification for a tournament."

  2. Scotland fall to consecutive narrow defeatspublished at 08:47 British Summer Time 9 September

Scotland, of course, are competing in Group A of the Nations League - the top tier of the competition.

They produced a great comeback at home to Poland in their opening game, pulling back from two goals down to draw level before conceding from a penalty deep in stoppage time to fall to a 3-2 defeat.

Steve Clarke's side then took the lead in Portugal on Sunday through a seventh-minute header from Scott McTominay, but despite a brave rear-guard action were unable to hold out, conceding two second-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Before Phil McNulty takes the reins, for the next hour we will be looking at reaction to the weekend's games, including Sunday's night's narrow defeats for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin has been on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast this morning.

He was asked about his country's poor run of form under Steve Clarke - with Sunday's 2-1 defeat in Portugal making it eight competitive matches without a win, the worst run in Scotland's history.

Qualified for 12 of 54 major international tournaments at senior level, finished rock bottom in 6 of those and never made the Knock Out stages.... maybe it's time to change the "heroic" failure narrative and start holding managers and players to account for their poor performances. Something needs to change.

All the praise for England's first 45 minutes of attacking fluid football against Ireland also feels like a bit of a sideswipe at Gareth Southgate. Southgate did wonders for the national team but the playing style was, let's face it, by the end, a little turgid, with too much reliance on players far past their best. Lee Carsley should be given the job. Winning the European U21s Championship without conceding a goal is the stuff most coaches dream of. Carsley's got the t-shirt.

Good morning on what kicks off transfer deadline week in the WSL and Women’s Championship.

Clubs have until 23:00 BST on Friday to add to their squads and there has already been some huge moves this summer.

We’re expecting more in at Tottenham - perhaps two additions if they can get them over the line, with one hoping to be a goalkeeper.

Bristol City are said to be bringing in another young midfielder, while Manchester United are seeking a goalkeeper to fill a spot left by Mary Earps.

There is likely to be outgoings from Chelsea, mostly loans for their younger players in a large squad.

West Ham and Crystal Palace could still be active too.

England interim boss Lee Carsley says their win over the Republic of Ireland has boosted his confidence - admitting he had doubts about his ability to do the job.

Declan Rice and Jack Grealish scored the goals in a2-0 win in the Nations Leaguein Dublin on Saturday, in England's first game since Gareth Southgate resigned.

Carsley, usually the England Under-21 manager, was put in interim charge for the games against the Irish and Finland at Wembley on Tuesday.

His senior managerial career was limited to short caretaker spells in charge of Coventry, Brentford and Birmingham between 2012 and 2017.

"In the back of your mind you always think... you know, it's easy to be the England manager, isn't it, when you're sat in the house," the former Republic of Ireland midfielder said.

"There have been times where I've thought I'm not sure if I could do it.

"But it [the Dublin win] has done my confidence good, and the rest of the staff as well, that actually we're OK, we'll be all right.

"I think it's natural to have doubts."
