  1. Is solution to ban the sale of alcohol?published at 13:46 25 June

There is a serious point to this - you would imagine Uefa will be busily working behind the scenes to find a way of stopping fans from throwing objects at players taking corners.

One suggestion mooted in commentary during Monday night's Croatia v Italy game was to ban the sale of alcohol in stadiums.

What do you think? Thumbs up if you agree, thumbs down if you don't...

  2. 'Beer and bedlam'published at 13:42 25 June

    John Southall
BBC Radio 5 Live in Germany

We’ve all seen the beer-throwing frenzy in fan zones and pub gardens across the country.

It’s now migrated to stadiums, no-one is safe from a soaking including the media.

The Croatia fans in Leipzig last night were extraordinary, the loudest I’ve heard and seen in the tournament so far.

It comes with a price. The Croatian FA can expect another hefty fine for the numerous flares that went off through the game and the constant cup throwing at corners, aimed at the Italian players.

But when Luka Modric scored in front of them in the 55th minute it was bedlam.

Myself, commentator Vicki Sparks and co-commentator Chris Sutton took cover as the beer rained down from the Croatian fans in the tier above.

A full pint exploded next to me, notes, laptops, computers soaked.

Chris said in commentary I was trying to catch it in a cup for later, not quite the case... but what’s going on when you spend €7/10 on a beer and you’re chucking it on us?!

It was a memorable night for many reasons and if Croatia do leave us on Wednesday their fans will be missed, beers and all.

  3. Is Ollie Watkins due a start?published at 13:35 25 June

Phil McNulty Q&A: #bbcfootball, WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Patrick and James: Surely the media response has been too hysterical for 4/6 points and qualification at a major tournament? And would you think about Watkins over Kane tonight?

Phil: Hello, chaps. I actually don’t think the media response has been hysterical, although I agree four points from six is the perfect platform to top the group with the chance to complete that job against Slovenia.

The scrutiny on the performances is justified because England were, at best, patchy in the win against Serbia then very, very poor against Denmark.

The good news is there is still plenty of time to put that right, which is what manager Gareth Southgate will be hoping.

I actually thought Ollie Watkins was a bright spark when he came on against Denmark, running in behind and seeing a shot saved by Kasper Schmeichel, but I would not pick him ahead of Harry Kane.

  4. Lampard v Rooney on 'England foot massage' anecdotepublished at 13:29 25 June

    Sorry, what?

This little tale might have passed you by in the Euros hysteria, but one of the benefits of having access to so many pundits on the BBC this summer is their anecdotes of England experiences.

On a recent episode of The Overlap podcast, Wayne Rooney claimed that when he was on England duty, team-mates Frank Lampard and John Terry would have their "feet massaged in bed until they fell asleep" by Chelsea and England masseuse 'Billy' and "then he tucked them in".

Over to Lampard, speaking to a BBC Sounds Football Daily special: "I need to have a word with him [Rooney]. Selective memory I'll call it."

"I would have been uncomfortable with that. It absolutely didn't happen! Wayne won't care, it's said now isn't it."

With both Lampard and Rooney on the BBC's Euro 2024 coverage, we look forward to round three of this one.

  5. 'I'd go for Pochettino as next England boss'published at 13:22 25 June

Phil McNulty Q&A: #bbcfootball, WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Mark Hampton, Isle of Man: Regardless of what happens I believe this will be Southgate’s last tournament. Prediction please for next England manager. Who you think we will get? Who would you like us to get?

Phil: Hi Mark. I think it’s still up in the air on Gareth Southgate but I do suspect this may well be his last tournament as England manager. If I was taking a guess I would suspect it might be Graham Potter unless Eddie Howe suddenly decides he fancies the job.

I’d widen the net out and go for Mauricio Pochettino. I think he would be an excellent choice – although I know it would be a controversial one because so many want the England manager to be English. This is a sentiment I understand but I always feel you should go for the best available person.

  6. Luiz deal edges closer with medicals bookedpublished at 13:17 25 June

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea are due to have their medicals with Aston Villa as the deal to take Douglas Luiz to Juventus edges closer.

The pair are part of the players-plus-cash deal which will take Luiz to Italy, with Juventus also reportedly paying €25m.

England Under-21 international Iling-Junior was due for his medical on Tuesday with midfielder Barrenechea pencilled in for his checks on Wednesday.

Luiz, currently in the USA with Brazil for the Copa America, is also due to have a medical in the States this week.

The USA's Weston McKennie was initially part of the deal but his wages became a problem and Villa were not able to find a resolution so turned to Barrenechea.

Forward Matias Soule was also discussed as part of the swap but Juventus' €40million pricetag for the Argentine youngster made that impossible.

  7. 'Players all seem to be on message'published at 13:13 25 June

Phil McNulty Q&A: #bbcfootball, WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Richard, Perpignan: Wayne Rooney referred to something not being right in relation to messages coming out of the England camp.

The football matches have been there for all to see with all of us able to form our own opinions on performances. Less apparent is what’s going on behind the scenes.

Analysing what you have seen and heard, what, if anything, is different about the England camp for this tournament compared to the recent ones under Gareth?

Phil: Hello, Richard. I don’t think there is anything different about the camp and the players all seem to be on message. There was a real show of unity (with a touch of defiance) from Gareth Southgate and Declan Rice when they spoke to us yesterday.

The bottom line is England have been poor. They are not playing well. This is what always shapes the mood and, worryingly for me, the team has looked jaded and more sluggish than many others.

England have made starts like this before and pulled it around but I think it is not just about getting a win against Slovenia tonight, it is also about producing the sort of performance to restore faith because the fans certainly let Southgate and the players know how they were feeling after that desperately poor display against Denmark.

Potentially Gareth's last tournament, qualified for knockouts, under pressure, he lets England off the leash in a 3-4-3 - Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi; Saka, Bellingham, Rice, Gordon; Foden, Kane, Watkins. Bosh!

    Jez, Gloucestershire

I think it’s no secret there will only be one change with Alexander-Arnold moving to the bench but for me I’d go 3-4-3. Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi. TAA at right wing-back, Saka at left wing-back. Rice and Bellingham in the middle. Palmer off the right and Gordon off the left, with Kane down the middle. TAA with two willing runners to hit in behind on the left in Saka and Gordon. One can receive and cross (Saka) one can cut in (Gordon). Take the game to the opposition! Foden to fight for his place off the bench. Tempted to put Toney in but I might be a biased Bees fan.

    Luke

Serious changes needed tonight but I am worried it will be one swap with Gallagher in for Trent. Need more pace and to play higher up so would like Gordon in for Foden and Gomez in for Trippier.

Former England striker on BBC iPlayer

The vast majority of the time Kieran Trippier is going in-field. If you are the opposition you are more than happy for him to do that.

You don’t want teams opening you up and pulling you wide, making the pitch as big as possible and then running in behind. You want them going into the traffic.

Creativity wise you are seeing hardly anything from the left-hand side.

That's the last of our pundits' starting XIs.

Micah Richards, Wayne Rooney and Phil McNulty all plumped for the same side, dropping Jude Bellingham deeper into midfield to partner Declan Rice and free up space for Phil Foden to move inside into the number 10 role.

That means the only change to the starting XI Gareth Southgate fielded in the opening two games would be Anthony Gordon coming in on the left, with Trent Alexander-Arnold missing out.

Judging by the thumbs on each post, as well as your messages, it seems to be a universally supported opinion.

But if reports are correct, Southgate looks set to bring in Conor Gallagher for Alexander-Arnold in midfield, with Gordon expected to remain on the bench, leaving Foden to once more start on the left.

I’m walking around Munich’s Olimpiapark, where the official fan zone will open in a few hours’ time. Bands are currently rehearsing on the main stage with a brilliant backdrop, next to the Olympic tower and on the waterfront (pictured above).

There were fans here early, wandering around outside, taking photographs by the Olympic rings and in front of the “Munich loves Europe” sign. These kids (pictured below) had their Denmark shirts and viking hats on.

At the entrance were some games. I met four friends from Copenhagen and challenged them to a game.

I still think there is a way for Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham to play together and maybe having a natural link player like Kobbie Mainoo could free them up to thrive in the team.

Anthony Gordon is unlucky to miss out in this team and maybe I have picked it closer to what Gareth Southgate will go for but before he tries Gordon, I would go for one more try with Phil Foden from the left.

  16. Alexander-Arnold or Gallagher - what do the stats say?published at 12:14 25 June

    England v Slovenia (20:00 BST)

Reports suggest that Conor Gallagher will replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in England's midfield against Slovenia on Tuesday.

According to Opta, no player created more chances (three) or played more line-breaking passes in the final third (five) for England against Denmark than Liverpool's Alexander-Arnold, despite him being substituted in the 54th minute.

However, at the end of 2023 (as per Opta) Chelsea's Gallagher was the only player in Europe's big five leagues with 20+ shots, 20+ chances created, 20+ dribbles completed, 20+ touches in the opposition box, 20+ duels won, 20+ tackles and 20+ interceptions.

Will England benefit from the switch?

  18. Jenas' England XIpublished at 12:04 25 June

Who makes BBC pundits' England XIs?

    Jermaine Jenas
    Former England midfielder

I'd bring in Joe Gomez for Kieran Tripper. I thought when asked to play left-back for Liverpool this year he did it very well, plus he gives us more of a solid base and would allow Kyle Walker to get forward more.

I’d like to see Kobbie Mainoo in as I think, on the ball, he has the quality we need to maintain possession and he also naturally wants to play on a different line to Declan Rice, which will give Rice more space to do what he does best.

I've watched Jude Bellingham all year play as a 'false 9' or just behind a frontman and he has a freedom to create - I think right now we're asking him to do too much defensive work, so he just looks tired at times in the game.

Anthony Gordon needs to come in. He's not a better player than Phil Foden, but he naturally holds the width on the left and runs forward off the ball, which is what we're missing.

People calling for Trent to be dropped are naive, he’s one of the best players we have! We just need to play him a system that works for him - let him play wing-back and have two attackers who can score goals from his crossing.

  20. Real Madrid announce captain Nacho departurepublished at 11:54 25 June

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid have announced, external that club captain Nacho will leave the club.

The 34-year-old made his Madrid debut in 2011 and played 364 times for the Spanish giants, winning the Champions League six times - the centre-back is one of only five players in football history to achieve this.

His final game for the club was the victory at Wembley over Borussia Dortmund this month where he lifted his side's 15th European Cup.

Nacho, who won 26 trophies at Real Madrid, was picked by Spain for Euro 2024 and played the full 90 minutes in their opening victory over Croatia.
