  1. 'I am my own biggest critic'published at 11:51 25 June

    England v Slovenia (20:00 BST)

England manager Gareth Southgate spoke extensively on Monday about how he deals with criticism from the media:

"I have got to guide this group of players confidently through the terrain that is the tournament.

"We are a high-profile team with high expectations and we fully understand that everything we do is going to be scrutinised.

"I am very comfortable living that life, but I don't need to get involved with external [pressures] because I am my own biggest critic and I think our players are as well.

"So there is nothing to be gained from us, that is going to help improve us, by listening to external criticism.

"We know what we have done well - we have been honest about that.

"We know where we need to be better - we have been brutally honest about that - and that's how you work as a team, that's how you coach a team and how you improve performance."

I do feel a bit for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

I feel like he has been hung out to dry a little bit. Gareth Southgate said it was an experiment and now it looks like it is an experiment that doesn't work.

It is very hard to play in a new position even when a team is playing. When a team is disjointed and not together, not getting up the pitch it becomes difficult.

Since we've already guaranteed qualification, let's try Trent Alexander-Arnold at left-back, stepping into midfield when in possession: Pickford; TAA, Guehi, Stones, Walker; Bellingham, Rice; Gordon, Foden, Saka; Kane. Palmer definitely needs to come on in the second half! Hopefully we'll be ahead and able to rest/try a few others, and give Shaw some minutes if he's ready.

    I love Trent Alexander-Arnold as a player, mainly a right-back coming in.

But to play him in the middle of the pitch in international football, it is so different to playing as a full-back. I would never have played him there.

Gareth Southgate's got Adam Wharton and Kobbie Mainoo, but I would play Jude Bellingham in the middle next to Declan Rice and get Anthony Gordon giving you the width with Phil Foden in the middle.

  5. Young signs extension & Everton press for Ndiayepublished at 11:38 25 June

    Everton

Everton winger Ashley Young says it was a "no-brainer" to stay with the club after signing a one-year contract extension.

The 38-year-old joined the Toffees last summer and played 34 times, scoring one goal. He became the club's oldest debutant.

The Toffees are also progressing in talks to sign forward Iliman Ndiaye from French side Marseille on a permanent deal.

It’s quite simple. Palmer. Palmer again. Palmer again. Palmer again ole ole. Quick, strong, embarrassingly skilled, he holds the ball and creates chance after chance. I can’t think of many starting XIs he doesn’t breeze into.

I think freshen it up, press really high and play on the front foot.

Give Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden a breather ready for the knockouts.

Conor Gallagher is the best we have at pressing to play ahead of Declan Rice and Adam Wharton. Luke Shaw is worth the risk to see if he can do 60 minutes as we need balance on the left-hand side so badly. If he isn't ready, we can change him.

The opposition is poor, so it's not a risk to me making so many changes and will also give those who think they are guaranteed a place a little kick up the bum.

Think we have to be aggressive, this sit deep defensive stuff is clearly not working. Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi, Gomez; Rice, Bellingham; Saka, Foden, Gordon; Kane. But we must press from the off. We have the subs. Palmer has to get game time. Mainoo, Wharton and replace Kane if needed with Watkins. He'll run all day. Please Gareth, sense the room.

    Neil, Cornwall.

Southgate needs to play to the system, not the individual. It has always been England's problem - I don't need to remind anyone of the 'golden generation'. Even as a Liverpool fan, if Southgate wants to play a 4-2-3-1, then he should start Gallagher over Trent and Anthony Gordon over Foden. It's coming home.

    Zachary Hutchinson

If Bellingham isn't moved alongside Rice to allow Foden to operate as a natural 10, with Gordon coming in on the left, then Foden has to be left out, with Mainoo coming in alongside Rice. Trying to shoehorn in our best players out of position has never worked. Big call today from Gareth.

The messages coming out of the camp is very different to what it has been over the last two tournaments. There is certainly something not right.

The positive I see from the last two games is that it can only improve. You are only going to come up against better opposition so it has to improve.

And we are already through to the last 16.

Phil McNulty's starting line-up is probably what most England fans and pundits are thinking too, therefore this is exactly the side that Southgate will not pick.

    Paul, Stourbridge

Completely agree with Phil's starting XI. It's an absolute no brainer. I knew Southgate was going to mess up the formation and put Trent in midfield the moment he dropped Grealish from the squad.

  14. Rooney's England XIpublished at 11:01 25 June

Who makes BBC pundits' England XIs?

    Wayne Rooney
    Former England striker

I'd like to see Anthony Gordon come into the team. I'd play Jordan Pickford in goal, then Kyle Walker, Marc Guehi, John Stones and Kieran Trippier. I’d play Gordon off the left, Bukayo Saka on the right, with Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in the middle. Phil Foden is number 10 and Harry Kane up top.

What's happening at the minute is that Phil and Jude are almost occupying that same position, so it is difficult for them to find space.

So dropping Jude back a little bit and giving Phil that space to roam, with Gordon and Saka keeping the width, will make a big difference to the team.

They've had a lot of possession in the opposition half but the space is a bit congested at the minute.

  17. McNulty's England XIpublished at 10:46 25 June

Who makes BBC pundits' England XIs?

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

England’s left side has looked unbalanced so I would go with Anthony Gordon in front of his Newcastle team-mate Kieran Trippier. I would bank on their understanding from club level to work and on Gordon to give England more natural width, pace and a goal threat.

I would drop Jude Bellingham back from number 10 to play with Declan Rice, not as a partner but someone who would have licence to roam given the Arsenal midfield man's game intelligence and ability to sniff out danger. I think this would still give both the opportunity to go forward.

I'd put Phil Foden, England's most dangerous player against Denmark, as the number 10 in this team behind the front three, because I believe the team would get much more out of him there and would become a more potent threat.

It has been five days since England's underwhelming draw against Denmark and debate continues over who Gareth Southgate should name in his starting XI for the final Group C match against Slovenia.

Should he stick with Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield? Start Anthony Gordon on the left wing? Drop Jude Bellingham deeper?

  19. 'There is always noise with England'published at 10:34 25 June

    England

Declan Rice finished his interview with BBC Radio 5 Live's John Murray - for the latest edition of Football Daily - by discussing whether there was a siege mentality in the England camp and highlighting his team-mates' desire to prove doubters wrong:

“It’s my third tournament now and I think every tournament has been the same. For the last two, there is always noise with England.

“You have got to learn to take it on the chin. At the end of the day we are the ones that have to go out and perform.

“Like we said, the performance in the first game was good, [the] second game not as good. [Slovenia] is a chance to rectify both of those performances.

“We are going to be really positive and it’s a chance to put all our negative stuff behind us and move positively forward.”

  20. 'He has surprised some with his ability'published at 10:29 25 June

    England v Slovenia (20:00 BST)

    England

More from Declan Rice, speaking on Football Daily, about fellow midfielder Conor Gallagher, who reports suggest will start alongside the Arsenal man against Slovenia:

“I have played against him [and] with him at academy level, [plus] against him when he was at Palace and Chelsea.

“He is a team-mate I would love to have on my team. He works his socks off, you feel so secure and safe in there with him.

“I think he has surprised so many people this year with his ability on the ball. How well he breaks forward with it, how he gets into the box, scores goals.

“I feel as though he is a really positive player and he has come on so much over the last few years. You can really see that within himself, how confident he is.

“Every time I have played with Conor, which hasn’t been much, I have really enjoyed it. I know him really well as a guy, I know his family really well, he is a lovely boy, it’s another great chance to stamp our mark.”
