Ebbsfleet's relegation from the National League was confirmed despite a spirited draw with Aldershot.

The Kent side have won only two of their 39 games this season and this defeat left them 22 points from safety with only seven matches left.

The writing has been on the wall for a long time for the bottom side but this was one of their better performances, with the Fleet leading 3-2 after only half an hour.

The Shots led twice through Ryan Jones in the 14th minute and Josh Barrett five minutes later but Franklin Domi levelled in between, while George Moncur made it 2-2 in the 27th minute.

Three minutes later Aaron Cosgrave put the visitors ahead but Tyler Frost clinched a point for 16th-placed Shots with a 67th-minute penalty.

A relegation long in the making

The Fleet have so far lost 25 of their league games this term, with their meagre total of 18 points seeing them cut adrift at the bottom of the table and they will return to play in National League South next season.

Saturday's result has brought an inevitable end to a story long in the making.

Ebbsfleet began the season with a 5-1 thrashing at Gateshead that sent them straight to the bottom of the table.

By the time they claimed their first point in a 0-0 draw away at Braintree Town, in their fifth game of the season, they were already three points adrift at the foot of the table.

Danny Searle was sacked as manager in September with that single point on the board and there was a brief new manager bounce as the club picked up their first win of the season in successor Harry Watling's first game in charge, a 1-0 victory over Hartlepool United at Kuflink Stadium.

But the club then went on a terrible run of 34 matches in all competitions without a win in 90 minutes (they beat West Bromwich Albion U21s and Nottingham Forest U21s on penalties in the National League Cup).

With relegation inevitable, they finally ended the winless streak after more than six months with a 1-0 victory over Fylde on 15 March.
