Southgate deserves more respect, especially if you compare pre-Southgate England with now. Hope he stays with the FA in a development role.

Ahead of Euro 2024 BBC Sport looked back at Gareth Southgate's history with the England national team, in the Three Lions manager's own words.

Success is "not getting knocked out in the quarter-finals" was what Southgate set as the new expectations.

Only against France at the 2022 World Cup did England get knocked out at the quarter-final stage under him.

It is empirical we get a proper tactician at the helm. If we can get someone who can keep the feel good factor of playing for England, as well as really get them playing attacking progressive football, then a trophy is a given with this crop of players.

Sad to see Gareth go, but what we need now is a proven winner that plays attacking football. The likes of Eddie Howe have promise, but they don’t have that big game experience. Klopp or Tuchel for me (and yes I know they’re both German!)

  5. Southgate goal statpublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 16 July

There will be numerous statistics emerging throughout the day surrounding Gareth Southgate's 102-game reign as England manager.

One of the most impressive may be that 27% of goals England men have scored at international tournaments came under Southgate, according to Athletic journalist Duncan Alexander.

No immediate successor was named when Gareth Southgate resigned but Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham has said the search is underway.

Reports suggest the names who could be on the shortlist include Newcastle's Eddie Howe, former Chelsea manager Graham Potter and ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

But that remains just speculation at the moment. We'll bring you more on those potential contenders shortly.

Former Crystal Palace captain Geoff Thomas has revealed how Gareth Southgate quietly helped secure a £2m partnership for Cure Leukaemia.

Ex-England midfielder Thomas played with Southgate at Palace and the pair have remained friends.

Thomas beat leukaemia after being diagnosed in 2003 and has helped raise millions to fight the disease as patron for Solihull-based charity Cure Leukaemia. On Sunday 15 riders completed the Tour de France route to raise £1m.

Southgate has helped the charity when Thomas has asked and his former Selhurst Park team-mate believes it shows exactly the person he is.

He said: "He stepped up when we were fighting to get a partnership with Deutsche Bank – which was worth around £2m – and helped us by just turning up and having dinner with some of their key players. It all makes a difference and it’s been a massive help for Cure Leukaemia.

"Gareth has done messages for people for many years when I’ve asked him and he’s supported the guys doing the Tour when they are feeling down. Having the England manager sending them his best wishes means an awful lot.

"He’s just a nice guy. He’s not your typical footballer, he’s not got an edge. He’s just a solid guy and wants to nurture the young players.

"He takes a lot of joy from watching (Jude) Bellingham and (Phil) Foden coming through the system and maturing into the players they are now.

"He has opened the England camp up to seeing the personalities of the players."

Mark Palios, former FA CEO, speaking on BBC 5 Live: "It comes down to the best manager for the job. That is what you have to do. There is a difference between a successful club manager and doing it at international level.

"If you look at the job description it is massive. The diplomatic element to the job is important, it is not the overriding feature and they do get massive amounts of support behind the scenes.

"Choosing a manager straight from club football as they have been successful is not necessarily the thing that would make it work."

  14. Southgate helped transform English football - Cooperpublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 16 July
    Breaking

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Leicester manager Steve Cooper has praised Gareth Southgate’s impact and believes he helped shape English football.

The ex-England Under-17 boss saw Southgate’s influence at the Football Association first hand and benefited from the changes the outgoing Three Lions manager was part of implementing.

Southgate joined the Football Association as head of elite development in 2011 and helped spearhead a £200m grassroots review that year.

Six years later the Under-20s won the World Cup in South Korea, beating Venezuela 1-0 thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal, before Cooper guided the Under-17s to World Cup glory with a 5-2 win over Spain a few months later.

“He was the most integral part in what was a huge change at the FA and how the national team operated," said Cooper, speaking to BBC Sport ahead of Sunday’s defeat to Spain in Berlin.

"There was a feeling of a need for change and Gareth, along with Dan Ashworth (former technical director), were the real drivers. I wouldn’t say we started from scratch but we looked at everything, the pathway from Under-15s to the seniors and the objectives we set.

"We changed the games programme, how we run the camps, who we wanted the teams to play and the culture. We knew it was an important time and it’s proved to be that.

"If we weren’t careful at that time, we were going to get left behind.

"We needed to make sure we stayed ahead of the curve. It was an important time - the DNA was implemented and it covered everything from top to bottom."

Dear FA. Please offer Jurgen Klopp whatever it takes to replace Gareth. He knows the players, it isn't the same intensity as a league manager, and his style will play to the players' strengths. Oh please, make it happen for the good of the nation!
