  2. 'I've loved it'published at 13:02 British Summer Time 16 July

    England

England opening batter Zak Crawley has paid tribute to Gareth Southgate ahead of Thursday's second Test against West Indies.

"It was awesome to see how united the country has been, every tournament we've done well," said Crawley.

"The pubs have been full, the atmosphere has been awesome around the country. I've loved it. When I was growing up we weren't really getting that far, so to see us get to a couple of finals and a semi is awesome, he's got to deserve a bit of credit for that."

Thank you, Gareth. You have restored the pride of being an England's supporter. Now it's time to restore the excitement, the joy and a striking mindset. Howe? Yes. Klopp? Yes. But also, consider Abel Ferreira - not a big name on this side of the world, but an absolute winner, with the ethos we need.

  4. Next England manager: Mauricio Pochettino?published at 12:58 British Summer Time 16 July

Another high-profile, popular, foreign manager out of work this summer.

The former Tottenham, PSG and Chelsea boss was heavily linked with Manchester United - before Erik ten Hag's contract was extended - and would relish returning to work in England.

He is keen to become Southgate's successor and his passion for football in this country makes him a serious contender.

  5. 'Southgate was always patriotic'published at 12:57 British Summer Time 16 July

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former Crystal Palace player John Budden, who played with Gareth Southgate, was speaking to BBC 5 Live: "The Gareth you see that is Gareth. We played at Palace together from 12/13 until about 23 and we came from similar places really. We are probably slightly more middle-class than the boys and had to adapt together.

"He was always patriotic and keen on England. He will be hurting at the moment but enormously proud of what he has done and what he has done for the nation.

"He is much tougher than the perception would be but not nastiness. There is logic and that is the difference."

As a Boro fan, Gareth was already one of my hero's. This is a sad day. He was the key player in ending 128 years of hurt for the Boro and so nearly ended 58 years of mediocrity for England. As England fans we should be careful what we wish for. Thank you for four amazing summers Gareth.

I think Henry Winter is spot on. Gareth changed the culture and transformed us into genuine contenders. But he lacked the killer edge to make proactive decisions in live game situations to get us over the line. He always seemed to be waiting for things to happen and then react.

Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire, who missed out on England's Euro 2024 squad through injury, has thanked Southgate on Instagram.

"You made us all believe again - memories that will last forever. Thank you boss."

  9. Next England manager: Jurgen Klopp?published at 12:49 British Summer Time 16 July

Another big-name manager out of work.

If the FA was minded to go down the route of attracting a name from abroad, Klopp would surely be on its list of contenders.

The former Liverpool manager is unlikely to be available right now, having stepped down at Anfield and wanting a break. But - should the FA be willing to wait - Klopp could come into the reckoning.

The 57-year-old is already being touted both for the vacant United States job and as a possible successor for Julian Nagelsmann, should he leave Germany.

Klopp for me. Proven attacking game which we have the players to be doing and SHOULD be doing. Proven track record of developing young players at his last two clubs. Would also possibly allow him to get back into management whilst not having the hectic full time schedule that comes with being a club manager, if that's his aim.

  11. Next England manager: Could Howe or Tuchel replace Southgate?published at 12:45 British Summer Time 16 July

Just as Mauricio Pochettino is privately understood to be open to managing England, sources close to out of work former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel have told me that he remains interested in the role.

However, he is not expecting to be contacted by the Football Association (FA) and is considered an outsider given the position of the other candidates.

Those close to Newcastle manager Eddie Howe believe he is on the FA's shortlist, amid widespread reports of his candidacy.

Another English manager well fancied by the bookmakers.

The Newcastle boss has long-been talked about as a potential England manager since impressing in charge of Bournemouth.

He has further enhanced his reputation at Newcastle - leading them in the Champions League in 2023-24, although they will not play in Europe next season.

The 46-year-old is tied to a long-term contract, understood to be until 2027, but it might be hard for Howe to turn down the opportunity if England came calling.

  13. Next England manager: Pep Guardiola?published at 12:42 British Summer Time 16 July

The Manchester City boss has long been mooted as a future international manager and a role with England would certainly excite many Three Lions fans.

Having won everything there is to win at club level with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, a new challenge next summer could prove very attractive.

Guardiola is under contract at City until the summer of 2025, but after that? You couldn't rule it out, although his wages could be another stumbling block.

  14. BBC pundits discuss Southgate's futurepublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 16 July

BBC presenter Gary Lineker and pundits Rio Ferdinand and Micah Richards discussed Gareth Southgate's future immediately after the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.

Watch the best of that analysis below.

Lineker: "I suspect Gareth might have had enough, it is a cruel, tough job."

  15. Next England manager: Lee Carsley?published at 12:38 British Summer Time 16 July

Perhaps a left field candidate but England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley is well thought of at the Football Association.

He has been with the FA a long time and won the European Under-21 Championship last summer. He could potentially buy the FA time until a big name was free next summer.

It must also be remembered Southgate managed the under-21s between 2013 and 2016 before becoming the senior boss.

Carsley, 50, held talks about becoming Republic of Ireland manager last year but opted to stay with the under-21s for another cycle.

    Where it all began....

Watch Gareth Southgate's first ever news conference from 2016.

A the time he said: "I'd like an England team that excite the public and that supporters look forward to watching, and are proud of.

"I don't think any job is impossible. Some are more difficult and complex, this is one of those."

"It comes with great responsibility. I'm ready to embrace that."

Tbh Eddie Howe is probably our best bet. He's a current PL league manager who knows how most of the England boys play seeing as they all ply their trade in the PL. This will be key if you want England to play that direct attacking footie we know they are capable of. He also has proven experience of blooding in the youth. And (I'm sorry GS) he has more tactical nous than GS ever will.

Like football, Gareth was the assist and now the new manager will get the win! Gareth should still be praised if we win in future tournaments as he’s now future proofed our talented squad!

  20. 'Southgate should have gone after the Qatar World Cup'published at 12:28 British Summer Time 16 July

    Henry Winter
Football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gareth Southgate is a good man and the fact is he cares. I was at all his press conferences in Germany and that care, pride and patriotism for his country are qualities people feel are ebbing from society.

He is a very decent man in what can be a very brutal profession at times.

However, I think he should have gone after the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

England weren't able to make those key proactive changes and this is actually a better squad than he had in Qatar.

He did reset the culture and restore the pride.
