  4. 'FA unlikely to restrict new manager search just to English candidatespublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 16 July

FA sources suggest they are very unlikely to restrict the selection process to just English managers.

They indicate they want the best person for the job.

They hoped Gareth Southgate would stay, but realised there was a high chance he wouldn’t extend his contract after the Euros, so they say that they have had a long-standing succession plan that they’re now deploying.

A candidate for an interim solution could be U21 boss Lee Carsley.

Senior football writer Oliver Kay at the Athletic spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about Gareth Southgate.

He said: "I think it’s pretty clear he’s been England’s most successful manager since Sir Alf Ramsey, two European Championship finals, a World Cup semi-final, a World Cup quarter final, to my mind the World Cup in 2022 was the best they’ve played under Southgate, and it just shows that sometimes you don’t get the breaks and sometimes you do.

"The final tournament, this European Championship that just finished, I felt going into it, maybe will this prove to be a tournament too far for Southgate, often it felt like that, I didn’t feel like they played well, I felt a lot of it looked dysfunctional, but they still reached the final which is something that England never used to do."

To fall short so close twice is heartbreaking, however, consider the standard of English football prior to Southgate taking over. He has moved mountains to reach back to back European finals. This is what he should be recognised for.

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England fan Simon from Essex: "I can kind of see it coming and I don’t blame him. I’ve never been one to follow other people, calling for him to leave because I can see the bigger picture. something that I thought of yesterday and even in the aftermath of the match - we’re trying to set an example for children, we’re trying to inspire them to get into the game. Yet children are gong to see a man get abuse for reaching back to back Euro’s final.

"There’s only a certain amount that anyone can take. We would have won on Sunday and people would have still been having the same conversation on Monday… ‘oh he was lucky’ I don’t know what else he could have possibly done to avoid the abuse he received - it’s just a really sad situation."

After the game there was a great deal of emotion on Gareth Southgate's face when he came to speak to us.

Tears had been shed or he at least he seemed close to tears. Just seeing him there, it just felt like the final act.

It is a tall order for his successor to try and better his record. There was clearly a split over Southgate.

History will prove to be very kind to Southgate.

This is a big moment in English football. Bigger than when Southgate took over. The players and the expectation he has wonderfully created means the bar is really high for the person. We need someone who can build on Southgate’s tournament knowledge, building a culture, making playing for England the pinnacle again, reinventing the team periodically etc. Difficult but exciting task for someone.

I speak now as a French person that has grown up in England. I don’t really support England but I did on Sunday. And I saw a team that England should be proud of. A team that in 2 years time will have youngsters that have more experience and ability. So it is a shame Southgate won’t be there to guide them. I won’t speak for England fans but from a Bleu I say thanks to England and to Gareth for a great game of football. I hope the English appreciate just how much Gareth left out there. And I hope they understand that this is him saying he can’t take the heartbreak again. Well done, Gareth. You did your nation proud. You gave your everything. Even when facing extraordinary amounts of criticism. Europe salutes you and will remember your name.

As for the next England manager, I hope Sarina Wiegman is at least considered for the men's job. She's won major trophies with two countries, is a known quantity to the FA and is calm and pragmatic in her approach. Outside of Klopp, I don't see many better available candidates.

Thanks for giving it your best, Gareth. You came closer to winning than anyone else and gave us reason to dream. The 2018 World Cup was probably the most fun I've had at a tournament in years. I hope the next manager cares as strongly as you did.
