  1. 'Do I not like that: Graham Taylor's World Cup failure'published at 14:01 British Summer Time 11 July

"If you say 'Holland' to me, to this day I see David Platt running through on goal. I can't help it. When things don't go well as an England manager, it sticks with you for the rest of your life."

Wednesday, 13 October, 1993 is a date lodged firmly in the mind of former England manager Graham Taylor.

Three years into the job, three years after Bobby Robson, Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker had captured the nation's hearts by reaching the semi-finals of Italia 90, the unthinkable happened.

A controversial defeat by the Netherlands in Rotterdam, with Ronald Koeman scoring the opener minutes after he should have been dismissed for a professional foul, effectively ended England's chances of qualifying for the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

Taylor was left feeling "cheated" and resigned the following month.

Thanks to a warts-and-all documentary broadcast on Channel 4 a year later, images of Taylor's touchline fury and exasperation remain etched in England fans' collective memory.

  2. Why was Graham Taylor trending last night?published at 13:58 British Summer Time 11 July

If you only the late Graham Taylor was still around to see last night's game. And if only VAR was available back in 1993.

The former Aston Villa and Watford manager, who passed away at the age of 72 in 2017, was in charge of England for their qualifying campaign for the 1994 World Cup.

And Ronald Koeman had a big part to play in a game which defined Taylor's England tenure.

  3. 'VAR is breaking football' - Koeman laments penalty decision against Englandpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 11 July

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman says that teams "cannot play properly" due to the influence VAR is having on matches.

England were awarded a penalty in the first half of Wednesday's Euro 2024 semi-final after a coming together between Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries and Harry Kane, following a VAR review, and the England captain scored to level the score at 1-1.

"In my opinion it should not have been a penalty," said Koeman after the match, which was won by a last-gasp Ollie Watkins goal.

"He kicked the ball and the boots touched. I think that we cannot play properly and this is due to VAR. It really breaks football."

  4. 'I didn’t want penalty situation to dictate result'published at 13:51 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

    Mario Melchiot
Former Netherlands defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Growing up as a footballer in Holland, it was always like ‘try to be in control of the whole game’. That's how I was brought up. I didn’t want that penalty situation to dictate it.

We didn’t want that result by letting [the penalty] dictate whatever we wanted to achieve. Of course, it was a sensitive moment.

Away from that, they still had enough time to fix the game and I still felt like England had the upper hand.

  5. Last-gasp winner 'difficult to accept'published at 13:48 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

    Netherlands

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said: "I'm disappointed about the final result, in a match that started really good for us. After that we had some difficulties in the midfield. We made some changes and the feeling was, in the last 20 minutes, that we were the better team, attacking more.

"Then it was the knockout on 90 minutes, which was a great goal. But then it's over, and that's difficult to accept."

  6. 'We were never favourites'published at 13:46 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

    Arthur Renard
Dutch football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

We’re really disappointed. But I think, realistically, people are accepting semi-final is a good result for the Dutch team. If you look at the squad, we were not mentioned as one of the favourites [to win the tournament].

  7. Gossip - Simons to Bayern?published at 13:44 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

Bayern Munich want to sign Netherlands forward Xavi Simons from Paris St-Germain.

The 21-year-old opened the scoring in Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to England in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.

  8. 'It was a little too much for us to take'published at 13:41 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

    Mario Melchiot
Former Netherlands defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

We started well, [Xavi] Simons got his goal, but then we dropped off.

I think England also pushed us back, then [Memphis] Depay got injured, so we had to make the substitution and we just dropped off even more.

We packed the midfield because that’s where the difficulty was, but then I still feel it was a little too much for us to take. The goals were great. The penalty, I mean it could have gone both ways. In football, you always want to be in control of things yourself and not by a situation.

  11. 'I didn't think it was a howler to be turned over'published at 13:30 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

Former England defender and ITV pundit Gary Neville felt the Netherlands had every right to feel aggrieved about the penalty awarded to England.

"As a defender, I think it's an absolutely disgraceful decision," he said. "There's no way that was a penalty. He just goes in naturally to block the shot. It's not a penalty for me."

Ex-England striker Alan Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "There is no doubt that there is contact, but the defender [Dumfries] is trying to block the ball.

"The follow-through from Harry Kane makes the connection and I didn't think it was a howler to be turned over."

My son was born at 1.21am yesterday morning. So I had a dreary eyed silent celebration while he was asleep on me and everyone in the house was getting some well deserved shut eye.

    Mark, Stockport

My son had his vaccinations yesterday and had a fever for most of the night, that meant very muted but crazy celebrations while the baby was in the next room sleeping off his fever. He's been my good luck charm so far and gets a kiss on the forehead every kick off of an England game, I'll be sure to do it again on Sunday

England captain Harry Kane: "It feels pretty special, [an] unbelievable achievement. It is going to be a massive game on Sunday and we have to be ready for it.

"I like to step up in those occasions (penalties). They can be the difference between winning and losing."

On his late withdrawal: "I will be fine. It was just getting a bit sore near the end. Ollie [Watkins] came on and produced an unbelievable finish. We have talked about being ready to make an impact and I am proud of him. He has got us to a final."

On criticism of Gareth Southgate: "The whole tournament speaks for itself. We do what we do. We go far in tournaments and get the job done. The boss is not afraid to make changes and do what's best for the team. People have come on and made important impacts. We are looking forward to Sunday."

  14. 'England have learned how to play tournament football - it's not always pretty'published at 13:19 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

    Paul Robinson
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's an incredible situation, what [Gareth] Southgate has done.

They have learned how to play tournament football and it is not always pretty. It is about putting yourselves in a situation where you can win the competition. England can beat anyone in a one-off game.

England fan Lucy spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live earlier: "It's England's time. I can't believe how buzzing I feel this morning.

"What a different feeling. Watched it on my own in the lounge and couldn't move because I thought something was going to happen.

"The feeling was different yesterday, that we played better. Listening to everyone and how positive we are, it's great. I have backed Southgate all the time.

"How did Ollie Watkins stay composed? His heart would have been in his mouth, but that's what he gets paid for, I suppose."

The Killers paused last night's gig at the O2 to stream the closing stages of England's win over the Netherlands.

The show will NOT go on for English comedian John Bishop though. He has announced he will rearrange his show in Wolverhampton on Sunday so it doesn't clash with Sunday's Euro 2024 final.

"I'm not doing the show at eight o'clock. The show's going to get moved to the afternoon," he said in a video on social media, with England players celebrating on TV in the background.

The former semi-professional footballer added: "I know it won't suit everybody, so anyone who can't make it, we'll give you a refund.

"But we're definitely going to move the time to Sunday afternoon, because there's no chance I'm going to be doing it at eight o'clock because I'm going to be busy watching these boys."

    Netherlands 1-2 England

The UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) has issued this statement from Germany: "Around 25,000 England fans were at the England v Netherlands match in Dortmund last night. The vast majority were well behaved with 15 England fans arrested in total.

"Before the match there were numerous pockets of disorder whereby Dutch fans targeted England fans in the town centre. This was dealt with effectively by the German police with the support of UK officers. After the match there were no serious incidents reported."

  20. Government will 'mark the occasion' if England win Euro 2024published at 13:03 British Summer Time 11 July

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said "we should certainly mark the occasion" if England win Euro 2024.

But he stopped short of confirming there would be a bank holiday if the Three Lions were victorious, saying he did not want to "jinx it".

Speaking at the Nato summit in Washington, he said: "We should certainly mark the occasion.

"I went to the last Euros finals. I don't want to go through that again so I don't want to jinx anything.

"We must mark it in someway but the most important thing is getting it over the line on Sunday."

England will play Spain in the final of Euro 2024 on Sunday in Berlin.

Sir Keir said he always knew the team were going to go "all the way."
