My wife and I watched from our hotel in Portugal with an older Dutch couple who we'd just met earlier in the evening. They enjoyed our banter so much they started filming us, and then sending the videos to their close friends... the Van Gaal family of Louis fame! 🤣 At the end of the night I went to pay the bill and they'd already settled it, class act.

It has not been a great Netherlands set-up. I think they are a bit more open and England can move it a bit better. [Coach Ronald] Koeman was having to change his tactics.

It was a really good game and it was good to see, as a Mancunian, the likes of [Phil] Foden and [Kobbie] Mainoo doing well. Gone are the days when we are doing well but getting nothing for it.

Kobbie Mainoo has had quite the year.

Since being injured on Manchester United's pre-season tour almost a year ago, causing him to miss much of 2023-24, the youngster has broken into the United first team, become a regular, scored in the Premier League, found the net in a triumphant FA Cup final, gained his first England call-up and featured at a major international tournament for the very first time.

At 19 years and 82 days, the Stockport-born midfielder became the youngest player to play for England in the semi-final of a major tournament.

Mainoo is now vying to add another landmark to his tally, an appearance and/or start in a European Championship final.

Kobbie Mainoo spoke to John Murray on the Football Daily podcast: "It's an indescribable feeling. We are all buzzing because it’s been such a journey to get here. It feels like we’ve built on all the performances we’ve had leading to this point. I feel like the only way is up and it’s time to put ourselves into history."

On England’s first-half performance: "I feel like in the first half it was clicking for the whole team. Everyone was getting on the ball and we felt like we had the game under control in the middle of the park, and I feel like in the second half, we had to grind it out.

"It was tough but the whole squad helped. The impact from the bench with Ollie [Watkins] - I mean, what a finish, what a way to end it."

On Ollie Watkins: "We’ve seen what Ollie has done throughout the league season. The time was coming for him to score that. I knew it, I could feel it."

On facing Spain in the final: "They are a good side and they’ve taken down some big teams but we will be ready for that. I feel like the only way is up and we are going to give it everything."

Phil Foden combined well with Kobbie Mainoo, who many pundits felt was last night's star man. His stats were also pretty impressive:

    • 1 chance created
    • 100% long balls completed

We were watching the game in Sorrento, Italy at an English bar. Crazy scenes at the end with everyone singing 'It's coming home' and fireworks.

    Rob

I watched the game in a local bar filled with Germans supporting the Dutch. Only one other person was for the English - I think, or maybe they didn’t like the Dutch? Either way I had to remain relatively calm up until the Watkins wonder goal! The vocal eruption from myself was enough to empty out the entire bar! Didn’t feel bad about that though! It’s coming home!

England's Phil Foden: "It's unbelievable. I don't think it has fully sank in. What a performance. We gave everything today and it's nice to see the subs making the difference as well.

"We want redemption for sure, we came so close last time [reaching the Euro 2020 final] and we want to win it this year for sure."

On Kobbie Mainoo: "He looks so experienced and like he has been playing the game for years. It is nice to play with him and I am enjoying it."

On Gareth Southgate: "I would say what a guy. Everyone loves him and is behind him. We want to do it for him."

On facing Spain in the final: "They play unbelievable football and keep the ball very well. It will be a challenging game but we know our strengths and what we can do."

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate when asked about substitutes Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins: "We were happy with how Phil [Foden] and Harry [Kane] were playing. Harry [Kane] definitely had the knock in the first half but we’ve got a good bench.

"We know that Ollie [Watkins] can make those kind of runs down the side, which at the beginning of a game can be a problem but definitely at the end can be an even bigger problem, and Cole [Palmer] has been showing those moments as well.

"In many respects, there’s no way Phil [Foden] deserved to come off but we just thought [we needed] a bit of freshness and it was worth going for it before extra time."

Our two year old daughter who has been at toddler football for 10 months has learnt 'Come On England' during this tournament and believe it or not has watched the 5pm England games with us, whilst eating in her high chair. After her football session last Sunday morning we watched a junior match with one girl playing among the boys. Our daughter was shouting 'C'mon girl'. Euro '24 is having a hugely positive effect on grass roots football. Massive credit to the England team.

  20. 'It was important I shared that moment with the subs'published at 09:30 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

    England

Ollie Watkins said he told Cole Palmer at half-time that they would come on in the second half and that the Chelsea forward would "set him up" to score against the Netherlands. They did just that literally one second from the end of normal time.

Both players are among several who have been substitutes for England throughout the tournament, and Watkins has admitted his frustration at having to bide his time.

"I said to all the subs that I was going to run over and celebrate with them if I ever score, because we're all part of it," he said.

"We've been working hard to get on the pitch and it's not easy. Everyone wants to play, so I thought it was important I share that moment with all the boys."
