Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott says Mikel Arteta has changed the ambitions of the club from finishing in the top four to winning the title.

The Gunners finished two points short of Manchester City last season, but are determined to once again to become champions for the first time since 2004.

"There is an expectation now for Arsenal to win the league. When I was playing there was the expectation to finish top four," Walcott said. "Now, there is a feeling which Mikel has set with his whole demeanour, of being alert constantly, of always being so positive.

"And that is not just with the players, but with the the whole staff, at the training ground and the whole environment of an all-in-one mind of a positive outlook.

"It is hard trying to get everyone going in the right direction and I think Mikel has done that, from the fans particularly, he has brought them all in one and he has gelled it."

On his expectations for this season, following a non-perfect start: "I have said Arsenal will win the league - and they are going to have to be exceptional to win the league.

"The way Manchester City have started, they have just wiped people to the floor. They have that fear factor now that when they walk on the field, the [opposition] players and their fans are terrified.

"We don't want it to be a one-horse race. We have got to be wary of Liverpool as well because they have started exceptionally well."

  5. Key players missing ahead of north London derbypublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    Tottenham v Arsenal (Sun, 14:00)

Arsenal will likely be without captain Martin Odegaard for the north London derby after picking up an ankle injury on international duty with Norway.

The Gunners will also be without Declan Rice after he was shown two yellow cards in the draw with Brighton. Mikel Marino is out with fractured shoulder.

Summer signing Riccardo Calafiori is doubtful after the Italy defender was forced off during Friday's Nations League match against France with a calf problem, but striker Gabriel Jesus could soon be back in contention following a groin problem.

Tottenham, currently midtable, lost in their last Premier League game against Newcastle but will be looking to win against their rivals after a 2-2 draw and a 3-2 loss last season.

Liverpool v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 15:00 BST)

Going into the international break, just Manchester City and Liverpool hold a 100% record in the Premier League.

Arne Slot faced the toughest of tests after being chosen as the man to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield but he has taken to it like a duck to water so far.

The Reds faced a tricky tie away at newly-promoted Ipswich on the opening day before taking on Brentford at home. Liverpool came out as 2-0 winners in both.

Last time out, Slot faced the tough test of taking on Manchester United at Old Trafford but Liverpool made light work of their rivals with a 3-0 win.

  8. Haaland is ‘high maintenance’ – Walkerpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

Manchester City captain Kyle Walker has named striker Erling Haaland as the team’s most “high maintenance” player.

Speaking to the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast, the defender said of his Norwegian teammate, “he does like his treatment. He does like his massages, ice bath, you know, his juices have to be right.”

The 34-year-old added that he thought this was a mark of Haaland’s professionalism, saying, “I think he's just looking after his body.”

The 24-year-old has been a sensation since joining Pep Guardiola’s City team in 2022, scoring 70 goals so far in 69 Premier League appearances.

Walker revealed that the star forward has even influenced what the team eat, citing “Norwegian salmon” and “raw milk” as things that Haaland has introduced to the group.

Get Involved - Is the England job Carsley's to lose?published at 15:22 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

Carsley's done a solid job in his first 2 games. But we can't jump the gun and give him the job based on two okay performances against lesser teams. Southgate did the same when he was first given the job, steadied the ship and got the players playing again (if we excuse the last euros). I saw much better football under Southgate in 2018-2020 than in these last two games. We're yet to see a plan B from Carsley which was Gareth's downfall, and yet to see him face a proper opponent. There's simply not enough evidence to give him the job. I still think we should be looking for world class managers, or we'll be in the same situation in a few years time.

  11. Aguero was the ‘worst trainer’ at City - Walkerpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

Manchester City defender Kyle Walker says that the club’s all-time leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero was “a really bad trainer.”

The Argentine striker scored 260 goals over 10 years with City and has the best minutes-to-goal ratio in Premier League history, but Walker says his former teammate was “horrific” in training.

Speaking to the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast, the 34-year-old said, “he's the only player that I'd say was a really bad trainer, but could turn it on on a Saturday,” adding, “As soon as that Saturday came, you knew that you were getting a goal or he's providing some sort of magic and some players are just like that.”

Aguero won five Premier League trophies with City between 2011-21, as well as six League Cup trophies and one FA Cup. He also famously scored the 94th-minute winner against QPR on the final day of the 2011-12 season that secured City’s first ever Premier League title.

  12. Chelsea ownership rift exposed and explainedpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

Chelsea Owner Todd Boehly & Director Behdad EghbaliImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea have two owners wanting to buy each other out. Neither wants to sell, amid a rift at the heart of the club.

In one corner is Todd Boehly, often mischaracterised as the main man and decision-maker of the ownership, mainly because he had a very public-facing role when Chelsea was taken over and made outlandish public comments, including the proposal of a Premier League all-star game.

Boehly, who also owns the LA Dodgers baseball team, was first revealed in a Bloomberg report last week to want to buy out his rivals at Clearlake Capital.

Despite his frontman profile, Boehly is a minority investor and has only a 12.8% stake - the same as allies and fellow billionaires Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss, which limits his power to force the issue.

In the other corner is Behdad Eghbali, who is really the most active and powerful figure at Stamford Bridge, as co-founder of private equity firm Clearlake, the company which owns a majority 61.5% stake in the club.

He is aligned with fellow Clearlake co-founder Jose E Feliciano as powerful figures who are adamant that they do not want to sell and are only looking to increase their stake.

Speaking on the latest episode of You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker, the 34-year-old said of midfielder Silva, “he'll have a little kick out at you when the ref's not looking.”

He also told the podcast that Grealish was “a wind-up merchant,” adding, “we love him for it.”

Speaking about former City players, he said Fernandinho, “knew all the dark arts,” and would “ruffle feathers,” every time he played at Anfield against rivals Liverpool.

  15. David Silva ‘just pips’ De Bruyne - Walkerpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

Manchester City defender Kyle Walker says that David Silva “just pips” Kevin de Bruyne as the best player he has ever played alongside.

The 34-year-old right back told the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast that his former City teammate could handle any pass given to him and make a bad ball “look like a good ball.”

“He wasn't the quickest,” said Walker, “but it's how he could turn, his manipulation of his body.”

The Spanish midfielder spent 10 years at the Etihad, between 2010-20, winning four Premier League trophies in that time, as well as five League Cup trophies and two FA Cups.

Walker, who joined City in 2017, also praised the way that Silva linked up with winger Leroy Sane during his time at the club.

“They just complimented each of us so, so well,” he said, adding, “he just knew where Leroy wanted the ball, when he did want the ball, how he wanted the ball.”

  16. Newcastle Q&A: 'A huge risk' - is Europe under threat after transfer window?published at 15:05 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    Matthew Raisbeck
    BBC Newcastle Sport

You have been putting your Magpies questions to BBC Radio Newcastle's Matthew Raisbeck and he will be answering a selection through the day.

Josh asked: Do you think the club's failure to strengthen the team in the recent transfer window will result in not qualifying for European football next season, and increase the chance of Bruno Guimareas, Alexander Isak or Anthony Gordon leaving?

Matthew replied: Newcastle have a brilliant manager and some outstanding players, so I still think this should be a strong and exciting season. However, I understand your longer-term concerns.

While most of their rivals strengthened this summer, Newcastle did not do enough. It is a huge risk. The club are under big pressure to deliver in the January window - either to keep the season on track, or to build from a position of strength.

Making quality signings is also a demonstration of ambition - because it proves to both the fans and the top players they already have they are serious about challenging for honours.

Guimaraes, Isak and Gordon may leave Newcastle at some point, but they are more likely to stay for longer if the club and team do not go backwards.

Matthew provides commentary on every Newcastle United match on BBC Radio Newcastle alongside former Magpies defender John Anderson.

The 34-year-old said on the latest episode of the You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker that midfielder Rodri “can play football but he can't dress.”

He described the Spaniard’s style as “horrific.” Fellow Portuguese internationals Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias’ dress-sense also came in for criticism.

Walker told the podcast that Silva wears sandals and “socks that don't even match,” whilst defender Dias apparently turned up to training recently wearing “cowboy boots” and, “a leather-like gilet.”

“Even the physios were giving him stick,” said Walker.

    Netherlands 2-2 Germany

Matthijs de LigtImage source, Getty Images

Koeman spoke publicly on De Ligt's performance in their win on Saturday, where he was unable to mark 38-year-old striker Edin Dzeko as he scored Bosnia's second goal in Amsterdam.

"We have discussed it," Koeman said in his press conference on Monday before the draw against Germany.

"He did not get his footwork right. It was a bad individual moment for a defender. You have to learn from that, it is clear that these kinds of moments need to be improved.

"But we should not be dramatic about it and put too much emphasis on it."

De Ligt, who has 45 international caps, only joined United last month from Bayern Munich in a deal worth over £42m (including add-ons).

Competing with De Ligt in Koeman's squad for minutes are fellow Premier League defenders Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, Micky van der Ven, Jurrien Timber, Van Hecke and Sven Botman, who is currently injured.

During the 2-2 draw, Manchester City's Ake was stretchered off in the first half with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.
