It's a hard choice as I'd like Eddie Howe because of what he's done with limited resources at Bournemouth and restrictions at Newcastle. Given the choice of players available for England he should, on paper, do well. However, Lee Carsley has had success with England Under-21s and the current squad, albeit against limited opposition. Furthermore, I feel he has a good rapport with his players. The FA can't win if either decision proves unsuccessful, as they'll be blamed for making the wrong choice.

You can see Lee Carsley is a coaching man, he adores the game inside-out. He was kneeling down on the touchline. He's so deeply obsessed with being able to see everything that's going on on the pitch.

I think it kind of makes sense for him to take the role if the FA do offer it to him permanently because it gives that sense of continuity throughout the Football Association.

Now that Lee Carsley is handing out England caps to everyone he knows, I wonder if Harvey Elliott might get a phone call one day. Think he deserves at least one run out, he’s been there at u-21 levels too..

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about Lee Carsley: "It's new, it has been a short camp. The manager, a lot of the young lads won the Under-21s Euros with the manager and they know the ideas but it was refreshing as well for some of the senior lads, who've not worked with the gaffer before, just learning. I always want to improve. It has been a good week for me."

  5. 'Carsley has put his stamp on England'published at 12:41 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

[Lee] Carsley has put his stamp on England, from the new young faces such as Angel Gomes, who had a fine debut at Wembley, to giving Trent Alexander-Arnold the backing and the platform to finally deliver for his country what he regularly produces for Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold did not appear to have Southgate's full trust, especially in the defensive aspect of the game, while the "experiment" of using him in midfield in Germany in the summer was ill-thought-out and doomed to failure.

Carsley has talked up what Alexander-Arnold can do rather than what he cannot and has been rewarded in both games, starting with an outstanding pass that showed remarkable vision to Declan Rice's first goal in Dublin.

Great to finally see an England team with a CM capable of receiving the ball deep, under pressure and playing on the turn (Angel Gomes). A hint to the future and a sign of the "pathway" developing a type of player that we haven't had before.

  7. Man Utd, Mourinho & France - Gomes' route to England debutpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

Lee Carsley's first squad as interim England manager included a few surprise inclusions - none more so than 23-year-old midfielder Angel Gomes.

The London-born former Manchester United Academy product only has 46 minutes of Premier League experience to his name, but has forged a successful career at French Ligue 1 side Lille, helping them qualify for this season's Champions League.

He has represented England at every age group from under-16s to under-21s and on Tuesday earned a senior full debut for the Three Lions in England's Nations League win over Finland, having appeared off the bench in Saturday's win against the Republic of Ireland.

Gomes, the godson of former Man Utd and Portugal winger Nani, impressed alongside Declan Rice, having more touches (130) and making more passes (116) than any other player.

Manager Lee Carsley, said: "He’s a great person. He absolutely loves football. He’s interested in tactics. He knows all the players in any league.

  8. 'Carsley's next squad? England job all about big decisions'published at 12:25 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    England 2-0 Finland

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live's chief football correspondent

Carsley’s next match is at Wembley next month against Greece; the other team in the group with six points.

He says he was thinking about his squad for that one not long after coming off the pitch following the Finland match.

For his first two fixtures in charge Carsley picked the same front four players, five if you include the very advanced Declan Rice. If Bellingham, Palmer and Foden are all available in October how he manages his options for those matches will be a big decision and I suspect, quite revealing.

But managing England is all about big decisions and the decision makers at the FA will be watching that one closely.

  9. What next for England?published at 12:20 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

The first international break of the season and the first in Lee Carsley's reign is done and dusted.

In just a months time, England are back for more Uefa Nations League action where they will take on Greece at Wembley and Finland in Helsinki.

Like England, Greece dispatched of Republic of Ireland 2-0 in Dublin after putting three past Finland at Karaiskakis Stadium.

    England's remaining Nations League ties:

Thu, 10 Oct: England v Greece (19:45 BST)

Sun, 13 Oct: Finland v England (17:00 BST)

Thu, 14 Nov: Greece v England (19:45 GMT)

Sun, 17 Nov: England v Republic of Ireland (17:00 GMT)

  10. Will Grealish keep his England spot?published at 12:10 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

Three of England's most talented players in Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden may be in line to return to the squad during the October camp.

However, the return of that talented trio gives Lee Carsley important decisions to make after Jack Grealish starred in an attacking midfield role that Bellingham, Palmer and Foden could also lay claim to.

Grealish, who missed out on a place in England's Euro 2024 squad, looked close to his best in the wins over Republic of Ireland and Finland, but will face huge competition once the next camp comes around.

The Manchester City midfielder could also switch back to his more usual role on the left, where Anthony Gordon excelled over the past two matches and both Eberechi Eze and Foden have also played in the past.

I don't think any candidate in any job can be judged after what is, in effect, two days into it. Lee Carsley has made a good start and has had success at under-21 level, having worked with many of the young players now breaking into the England men's senior team. On paper, he is a great choice and I feel he should be at least given a chance at the next major tournament, if the qualifiers go well.

  12. 'Probably no fracture in the ankle' - Norway doctor on Odegaardpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard came off injured in the match against Austria on Monday and speaking to the Norwegian newspaper, VG, doctor Ola Sand said he has "probably" not suffered an ankle fracture.

Odegaard is likely to be out injured for three weeks, according to the Norwegian team doctor.

The injury comes at a bad time for Arsenal, who play rivals Tottenham at the weekend before games against Atalanta in the Champions League and then title rivals Manchester City.

It is understood that Odegaard underwent a scan yesterday afternoon and he is being assessed daily by the Arsenal medical team.

"Such ankle injuries often take at least three weeks. Anything other than that is just a bonus and then it can take longer," Sand said.

"What we have so far obtained from the MRI examination in London is that there is probably no fracture in the ankle.

"It is always a bit difficult to interpret an MRI scan when you have had an old injury, but Arsenal are almost certain there is no breach, but this may still take some time.

"In the event of a fracture, we are talking about being out of action for six weeks plus."

Arsenal will also be without midfielder Declan Rice who is suspended and new signing Mikel Merino injured.

  13. Walker has made it clear he wants to be involvedpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

This was only the second time that Trent Alexander-Arnold - and his first for five years - had started consecutive games at right-back for his country. Certainly stepping into midfield suited the Liverpool player with his distribution, but he’s never started three-in-a-row in that position for England.

Kyle Walker said it was the “right call” for his omission but he’s made it clear he wants to be involved: "I need to make sure that I am proving him [Carsley] wrong in the near future," Walker told his BBC podcast last week.

  14. Big decisions to come for Carsleypublished at 11:48 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

One thing Gareth Southgate was unable to do during his time as the England boss was to get the best out of Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Manchester City's Kyle Walker and Newcastle's Kieran Trippier were the preferred right-backs under Southgate, but has that all changed now with Lee Carsley in charge?

Trippier announced his international retirement at the end of August and 34-year-old Walker was not involved in the latest camp after playing just three minutes for City this season.

Walker may expect to be selected for the October camp, but will Alexander-Arnold keep his starting spot after two man-of-the-match performances?

  15. 'We are very lucky to have Kane'published at 11:38 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    England 2-0 Finland

The England manager's job may be one of the most pressurised in international football, with intense scrutiny from fans and media and a fierce expectation that - one day, hopefully soon - the Three Lions can end their decades-long wait for a major trophy.

However, while Lee Carsley may have admitted to spending the majority his first week in charge out of his comfort zone, but says the role is made easier by the fact he has such a talented group of players at his disposal, led by one of England's all-time greats in Harry Kane.

"We are very lucky to have him," said Carsley on Kane. "He has definitely performed on this camp the way I have seen him perform for Bayern this season. He looks very motivated to keep doing it as well, which can only be good for us."

On the responsibility he feels as England manager, Carsley added: "I still had that feeling with the Under-21s, to be honest with you. The responsibility that I feel, I just want the players to do so well. That pushes you because you want to put them in a position where they are performing really well. Playing to the best of their ability.

"I feel that pressure - to make sure that we can create opportunities for them to be really effective in effective areas."

I’m liking what I’m seeing so far, new blood, positive approach, but we do have to see how we shape up against the stronger teams. Love Gomez, Grealish, Foden when he’s back. Refreshing. Did well last night against 8-9 defenders, which only goes to show that you don’t win anything by defending.

  17. 'See you next month, Lee?'published at 11:26 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    England 2-0 Finland

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live's chief football correspondent

The last thing I said to Lee Carsley in the post match interview was, "See you next month?" Which very much had a question mark at the end.

And his smiling reply was: "Hopefully". Against limited opponents like Ireland and Finland, frankly anything less and questions would have been asked.

But having interviewed Carsley five times over the past couple of weeks, I sense he is warming to the role. And he was keen to stress that when he says he is out of his comfort zone, that is a good thing.

  18. Carsley lays down marker in first camppublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

It was said Lee Carsley would be given three camps to lay down his stamp on the England job and he couldn't have made a better start with two 2-0 wins over Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Carsley's side will face their toughest test yet, at home to Nations League table-toppers Greece, in their next match on Thursday, 10 October.

Greece are above England on goal difference in Group B2, having also won their opening two matches without conceding.

A reminder that finishing in top spot in your Nations League group secures a place in the play-off round for World Cup qualification - if qualification is not secured through the groupings.

  19. Villa complete move for Nunespublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

We understand Aston Villa have finalised a deal for Brazil international Gabi Nunes and she will become the club's record signing.

Her arrival is expected to be announced before Friday's WSL transfer deadline.

There was a release clause in her contract with Levante of 300,000 euros (£250,000).

As it stands, I'm not expecting any other imminent arrivals at Villa aside from Nunes, though they are looking at potential loan options for some of their young players this season.

Club management and international management are different jobs, and right now Lee Carsley has at least as good a record as any of the other names likely to replace him. Might as well give him a proper chance as bring in someone like Newcastle's Eddie Howe, who has built a career on doing long-term, day-in, day-out development work with players.
