Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman said he substituted Manchester United centre-back Matthijs de Ligt during their 2-2 draw with Germany on Tuesday night to "protect" him.

De Ligt, 25, was replaced at half-time in the Uefa Nations League clash in Amsterdam by Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke after the defender had a hand in both of Germany's first-half goals.

A misplaced pass in the first half led to Deniz Undav equalising before his failed clearance led to Joshua Kimmich giving Germany the lead, just three days after De Ligt made mistakes in the Dutch's 5-2 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Of course I would rather have kept [Matthijs de Ligt] on the pitch," Koeman told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

“It just looks like he is now in a period where all his mistakes are being punished.

"I gave him a new chance today but eventually I protected him by taking him off."

Manchester United have reported a net loss of £113.2m in the year to 30 June, their latest accounts show.

It follows losses of £28.7m in 2022-23 and £115.5m in 2021-22, and their latest figures take total losses over the past five years to over £370m.

Despite the results, United are not expected to breach the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules because not all spending goes against their calculations and clubs can claim allowances known as 'add backs'.

Under Premier League rules clubs cannot lose more than £105m over a three-year period and Everton and Nottingham Forest received points deductions for being in breach.

"The club remains committed to, and in compliance with, both the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules and Uefa's financial fair play regulations," said United chief executive Omar Berrada.

  9. Youth coach Allen backs Kane to reach 100 goalspublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Bradley Allen, who coaches Tottenham Under-18s, worked with Harry Kane as a youth player at Spurs and believes if anyone can reach 100 goals for England, Kane can.

"If he can continue to stay fit and extend his career, he will certainly aim towards breaking Peter Shilton’s record of 125 caps for England, if not get the 100-goal record," Allen told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"He has three years [to reach 100 goals].

"He’s relentless in his work. When he puts his mind to anything, he’s always been fiercely determined to prove to himself that there’s no ceiling to the achievements he wants to go for."

  10. Could Kane reach 100 goals?published at 13:49 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    Harry KaneImage source, Getty Images

Harry Kane will be pushing for his next milestone after collecting 100 caps for his country. Could that be a century of goals?

The England skipper needs 32 more to reach that landmark.

Over the last three seasons, the 31-year-old has scored a combined 28 goals in an England shirt.

Based on these numbers he could reach 100 in 2027.

With the World Cup taking place in North America in 2026 and the Euros in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2028, could Kane eke out his international career long enough to take in both those competitions and potentially join Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi by reaching 100 international goals?

Click thumbs up if you believe he can, thumbs down if you think he won't.

Re: Kane needing to stay higher. He tends to play higher up the pitch when he has a quality passing playmaker playing behind him, e.g. Eriksen at Tottenham. That's one of the reasons playing Trent Alexander-Arnold is so important for England. His passing makes Kane get right into goal-scoring positions.

  13. 'I try to never set any limits'published at 13:33 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    England 2-0 Finland

Talking of Harry Kane, that brings the England discussion full circle.

We started the day looking at reaction to his 100th appearance for the Three Lions, when the Bayern Munich striker produced a typical captain's performance, scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory over Finland.

He spoke afterwards about his desire to carry on playing, putting "no limits" on his England career. Those words followed his pre-match pledge to target 100 international goals.

After moving to 68 with a brace on Tuesday night, could that century of goals be within reach?

Joe: RE Guy @09:11 - what's even more promising is that Lee Carsley has got the team to actually service Harry Kane up front and not leave him stranded. Give Kane enough chances and he will score plenty. Carsley seems to have connected the dots and got the quality wingers and midfielders to get the ball to a quality striker. Plenty still to do, but early signs are good!

  15. 'Always that opportunity' to move through pathwaypublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    England 2-0 Finland

    England

More from Jordan Pickford, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, on whether he'd like to see Lee Carsley get the job on a permanent basis: "I think with England there's the pathway from the young age groups, with the amount of people who play for the under-16s and get the opportunity to play for the seniors.

"It has been there on the manager side as well. My first manager for England Under-21s was Gareth [Southgate] and he had eight years at the senior level, so there's always that opportunity, for player and coach."

Why shouldn’t Lee Carsley get the job full-time? All the big-name English and foreign managers have come and gone and we’ve won precisely nothing in nearly 60 years. Carsley has though and at international level, no mean feet either. I don’t see that we’ve got anything to lose, he plays exciting, attacking football that we all want to see. Give the guy a chance.

  17. Carsley part of the so-called 'England DNA' - McNultypublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    England 2-0 Finland

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Lee Carsley has graduated via England’s Under-21s, as did Gareth Southgate, winning the European Championship in 2023 while offering a guiding hand to so many of the youngsters he brought into his first squad.

He is part of the so-called "England DNA" coming out of St George’s Park and the manner in which Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, who inflicted misery on Southgate’s side in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, took the same path in his country may also play into the FA's thinking.

We need to all settle down a minute and look at England's objectives. To win the World Cup in 2026 and to win the Euros in 2028 (don't forget England host it). Lee Carsley's doing a great job as the interim manager... but is he really the one to deliver those goals? I'm sorry, but I don't think so. We need a proven tournament winner - ideally at international level. If those are really England's objectives, and they surely are, then we really do need a proven winner managing the team.

  19. FA's technical director 'comfortable with Carsley being in charge'published at 13:09 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter on Football Daily

The biggest endorsement I can give to Lee Carsley is that John McDermott, the technical director of the FA, said that the first half in Dublin was the best training ground exercise that he'd seen, in terms of the way they played against Ireland.

John McDermott, the FA's technical director - he'll be one of the kingmakers - he's certainly very comfortable with Lee Carsley being in charge.

  20. Stockport coach Mangan's Real Madrid move blockedpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 11 September 2024

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Stockport assistant coach Andy Mangan has been denied a move to Real Madrid after his work permit was rejected.

The former Tranmere and Shrewsbury striker was on the verge of joining the La Liga champions to work under boss Carlo Ancelotti, with the switch subject to a work permit.

But the 38-year-old's application, which could have taken up to nine months to process, is understood to have been rejected by the Spanish government and the move is currently off.

Mangan had worked with Ancelotti's son, Davide, who is part of the staff at Madrid, while doing his Uefa coaching badges.

He joined Stockport in the summer after they won League Two under manager Dave Challinor. The Hatters are currently unbeaten and second in League One after four games.
