The benefit of the depth Arsenal have built is every player who doesn't start will want to make an impression when they come on. There will be no drop off bringing on subs this year. We have so many top class 'finishers' to bring on when other teams tire.

Into a minimum of six additional minutes.

Would Arsenal have won games like this a couple of seasons ago - or even last season?

They've hit Athletic Club where it hurts and the home fans, who have been noisy all game, are heading home disappointed.

    PSV 1-3 Union Saint-Gilloise

The hosts managed to get a goal back but it won't take away from an excellent Champions League debut for Union Saint-Gilloise.

They went two ahead before the break in their first league phase game before Kevin Mac Allister added a third after the break.

The Belgians were better throughout, produced the best chances, could have scored more and absorbed pressure well at the back.

A commanding win to kick off their campaign.

  8. 'Substitutions have worked out perfectly for Arteta'published at 19:37 BST

    Athletic Club 0-2 Arsenal

    Ally McCoist

That's all about Martinelli. Rice gives him the ball really early and he uses raw, aggressive pace to get by Gorosabel and once he does, he picks out Trossard.

You think Trossard is going to hit it earlier but he buys himself a bit of time and it comes off Vivian as it goes past the keeper. The substitutions have worked out perfectly for Arteta.

    Leandro Trossard

    It's the super-subs show!

After Gabriel Martinelli came off the bench to put the Gunners ahead, now Leandro Trossard has found the net to double the lead.

Trossard's attempt takes a heavy deflection and the home side claim there was a foul in the build-up but the goal stands and Arsenal are well on their way to three points.

This is not the time for potential for Arsenal. It's about taking that expectation and potential into delivering something and the experience will stand these players in great stead.

It's coming to places like this, it might not be pretty but you're looking at the scoresheet and it says one nil, and at the moment they've got three points.
