Southend United's winning start to the National League season ended after they were held to a goalless draw by York City at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers were chasing a third straight victory and saw wing-back Gus Scott-Morriss shoot just wide early on.

York – who picked up a first victory at Truro City in their last match – went close midway through the first half when midfielder Ollie Banks sent a free-kick crashing against the crossbar.

Southend struck the woodwork themselves late on through a looping header from substitute Sam Austin, but York held out to take a point.
