  2. 'Job is Carsley's to lose'published at 15:30 British Summer Time 6 September

Earlier, I spoke to England fan Billy Grant who was at Euro 2024 for Gareth Southgate's final tournament and will be in Dublin for Lee Carsley's first game as interim boss.

"Is this the start of a new era for England? Only if you believe Carsley is going to get the job full time," Billy, a Brentford fan - where Carsley was briefly manager in 2015 - told me.

"When you compare Carsley’s footballing presence to someone like Pep Guardiola who many fans say they would ‘love’ to have leading our national team, it doesn’t even compare.

"But I like that. Personally, I think the job is there for Carsley to lose.

"First stop - Dublin. I’m expecting a slightly more, dare I say it, ‘adventurous’ approach from our players. But we won’t be going full Kevin Keegan. Well not during his probation period anyway.

"These are exciting times for England and I wish Lee Carsley all the best."

    .

It's one of Dublin's most recognised streets.

Lansdowne Lane nestled against the backdrop of the Aviva Stadium featured prominently in the Irish gangland-drama Kin which landed on BBC One and gripped millions of viewers over two seasons.

There was no sign of the Kinsella's when I popped by earlier. Fans of the hit crime drama are still waiting to discover if there will be a third season.

And England fans will be wondering if there will there be a third game for Lee Carsley.

The interim boss has got the England gig for the next two matches at least. But the FA said Carsley could be in charge "throughout autumn while the FA's recruitment process for a new permanent head coach continues."

After the Republic of Ireland on Saturday (17:00 BST) and then Finland at Wembley next Tuesday (19:45), England host Greece on 10 October (19:45) before travelling to Finland three days later in the Nations League (17:00).

  5. 'It's going to be a different Wales'published at 15:17 British Summer Time 6 September

    Wales v Turkey (19:45 BST)

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Former Wales forward Robert Earnshaw on Wales playing Turkey: "It's a tough one. It's the toughest one. Turkey came off a really successful Euros, one of the last eight teams, unluckily got knocked out in the Euros but they were entertaining. They are much much better than they were in the last game, Wales drew 1-1 [November 2023]. But this is going to be a really tough one.

"But I think Wales can get a draw. I think we're going to see a new Wales, very different, very much tactically different. With the home crowd as well, I think it's going to probably be a draw but I can also see Wales win this one. My heart says its a Wales 2-1 win, but they will give a draw, minimum. I think it's going to be a different Wales."

  6. 'He looks comfortable as a head coach'published at 15:12 British Summer Time 6 September

    Wales v Turkey (19:45 BST)

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Former Wales forward Robert Earnshaw spoke about Wales manager Craig Bellamy's passion on BBC 5 Live Breakfast: "He looks comfortable in that role, as a head coach now. He just loves working with players.

"He's much more composed, very different actually, as a player to a coach. It's going to be very different, it's going to be a super emotional night.

"I think he knows it. I think out of his playing career, I don't think anything is going to feel like the way it is going to feel tonight when he walks out and he's the head coach of the national team.

"That is going to be some proud moment for him."

When you make your way to Cardiff City Stadium from the direction of the city centre, you are met with a mural of Gary Speed.

An image of the late Wales captain and manager adorns the side of a building overlooking a busy Canton crossroads; a black and white portrait on a bold red backdrop, accompanied by the words ‘Only one Gary Speed’, as sung by the country’s supporters at every home game.

Speed may only have managed Wales for 11 months but he left a profound legacy, the man many believe to have laid the foundation for the team’s rise from international football’s lowest reaches to the sparkling highs of its greatest generation.

Mention Speed's name to any of his former team-mates, colleagues or players he coached and you will likely see them visibly moved, touched by their memories of a man they loved, who took his own life in 2011.

Craig Bellamy is one. Having played with and under Speed for Wales and shared a dressing room with him at club level, Bellamy has a deeper understanding than most about what made him special.

Now, as Wales head coach, Bellamy helps carry Speed’s memory as well as the hopes of a nation.

    Wales v Turkey (19:45 BST)

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Former Wales forward Robert Earnshaw spoke about Wales manager Craig Bellamy on BBC 5 Live Breakfast: "It's a fresh new era for Wales football. It's been great, we've managed to do some big things over the last 10 years but it's now a fresh man and somebody I know well.

"I played up front with him for years. I've been in and around what he thinks, how he is but it's going to be great.

"Big game against Turkey so it's a huge start.

"This is me knowing Craig, it's going to be an emotional night for him because I know just how proud he is and how proud he's going to be in that game tonight."

  9. Bellamy reign beginspublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 6 September

    Wales v Turkey (19:45 BST)

    Dafydd Pritchard
    BBC Sport Wales

Craig Bellamy will begin his much-anticipated reign as Wales head coach on Friday with a Nations League match against Turkey in Cardiff.

Former Wales captain Bellamy, 45, succeeded Rob Page in July and has used this first week of training to start implementing a progressive new style of play.

The first examination of those methods will come at Cardiff City Stadium against a Turkey side that reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 this summer.

“It's going to be a very proud moment. I've worked hard for this and I'm going to recognise that,” said Bellamy.

“But that moment when the game gets going, I'm not paid to be emotional. I'm paid to make the best decisions possible on the side.

“That's the business I'm in straight away. Of course I'm proud and I'm fully aware that the moment is going to catch me. But it has to leave very quickly because there's a big responsibility and the players need me as well in that moment.

“When I look back on my career I wished I'd enjoyed it more. I'm fully aware of what it means representing your country. But I want to enjoy it by being calm and clear on every situation that can occur in the game.”

While Manchester City have signed another goalkeeper, Manchester United are still looking to add to their options with just two currently in the senior squad after Mary Earps’ departure to Paris St-Germain.

United were targeting Leicester City’s Lize Kop but they were told she was not for sale under any circumstances.

It means United are now exploring options elsewhere before next Friday’s deadline but have so far made no progress.

  12. Bergwijn 'doesn't even want to play under Koeman'published at 14:45 British Summer Time 6 September

    Netherlands

Steven Bergwijn says he does not want to play under Ronald Koeman after being criticised by the Netherlands coach.

Koeman said he will not select Bergwijn after the 26-year-old forward made a £17.7m move from Ajax to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad on Monday.

The former Everton and Southampton boss believes the move shows Bergwijn's main ambition is financial, not sporting, and added "the book is basically closed to him.

"He knows what I think about this."

However, the ex-Tottenham forward says he has not spoken to Koeman about his move to Saudi Arabia.

"I don't even want to play under Koeman anymore," Bergwijn told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

"I won’t play for someone who portrays me like he has done in the media. He could have called me, heard my side of the story. How can he say such things without talking to me?

"If he had been a committed national coach, he would have called me first. Now I had to hear about it on TV. I've had many beautiful moments with him, so this is far too easy and I'm disappointed with him."

  13. Promoted sides search for first winpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 6 September

We end our Premier League report with the three promoted sides.

Last season Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United all made an instant return to the Championship - what odds Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester doing the same this year?

All three are still looking for their first win, with the Tractor Boys and the Foxes both managing a point from their first three games, while Saints remain without a point and off the bottom only on goal difference.

It will no doubt be a tough season for each promoted side, with a finish of 17th place or above the initial goal.

Leicester's successful appeal against a charge for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules, which might have brought a points deduction, provided a boost in their quest.

  14. European qualifiers in the bottom halfpublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 6 September

Chelsea and Manchester United both ended disappointing campaigns on a high last season after squeezing into Europe, the Blues courtesy of a late upturn in form to qualify via their league position, while Erik ten Hag saved both his job and the club's blushes by lifting the FA Cup - at City's expense.

But that sense of unease has already returned at Old Trafford following Sunday's torrid display in defeat at home to Liverpool, while Enzo Maresca's promising start to life as Chelsea manager has been undermined somewhat by off-field concerns, largely down to the club's frenzied recruitment policy.

A total of 10 players arrived at Stamford Bridge over the summer for a combined £203m, although the club recouped £150m as 12 departed - the end result is an inconsistent, young team which is liable to miss chances and make defensive mistakes.

Injuries and mistakes by United players, epitomised by Casemiro's poor showing against Liverpool, means that both European qualifiers lie in the bottom half of the table and will be seeking more stability and improved results after the international break.

  15. A torrid start for Dychepublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 6 September

Since we mentioned Everton, where to start with Sean Dyche's struggling side?

They hit rock bottom in every sense after letting slip a two-goal lead at home to the Cherries to fall to a third consecutive league defeat.

Having battled against relegation in recent seasons, Everton fans will understandably have been hoping this year would be different.

However, the Toffees could hardly have made a worse start as they sit bottom of the table on zero points, having conceded 10 goals.

There is no doubt that ownership wrangles have made managing Everton a thankless task, but the Premier League is ruthless and the pressure will be mounting on Dyche.

  16. A* for the Premier League's three Bspublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 6 September

Outside of the usual runners and riders, the Premier League's three Bs - Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth - would all surely be getting an 'A*' for effort and attainment, if the top flight was to have an early parents' evening.

Brighton look to have found another top manager in Fabian Hurzeler, following in the footsteps of Roberto de Zerbi and Graham Potter.

At 31 years of age he is the youngest manager in the Premier League, but has overseen wins against Everton and Manchester United, along with a draw at title contenders Arsenal.

Brentford, meanwhile, have proved there is life after Ivan Toney, winning two of their three league matches so far, with Bryan Mbuemo scoring three times and Yoane Wissa twice.

And Bournemouth have kicked on after the departure of star striker Dominic Solanke, helped by the mother of all comebacks at Everton before the international break to maintain their early momentum under much-admired manager Andoni Iraola.

  17. Impending contract issues for Liverpool?published at 14:13 British Summer Time 6 September

Liverpool players congratulate each otherImage source, Getty Images

However, Mohamed Salah's comments after Sunday's starring role at Old Trafford - about the lack of talks over renewing his Anfield contract - highlighted a potential problem for Liverpool.

Arne Slot may have enjoyed the dream start as Jurgen Klopp's successor, but with three of his team's key players - Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold - all going into the final year of their contracts, the question is when will this issue start to have an impact on performances and results?

There is plenty of rumour about this in the latest edition of BBC Sport's gossip column:

  18. Haaland & Salah off to a flyerpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 6 September

There are no secrets behind the flying starts made by Manchester City and Liverpool - both teams have a talismanic player who has hit the ground running.

Erling Haaland has seven goals in three games for City, including back-to-back hat-tricks, while Mohamed Salah has scored in every game for Liverpool and also weighed in with three assists.

Neither player was involved in an international tournament during the summer and players' union chief Maheta Molango believes their early season form illustrates why footballers must get proper rest periods.

"There is a big difference between players who have holidays or not," Molango said. "One difference is from England in Haaland. He is back to the machine he was when he first joined us in England, similar to Mo Salah, he is the best version of Mo."
