  2. Biggest defeat 13-0; biggest win 1-0published at 07:16 British Summer Time 6 September

    San Marino 1-0 Liechtenstein

The stats on San Marino's Wikipedia page, external make for interesting reading:

    • Biggest defeat - 13-0 to Germany in 2006
    • Biggest win - 1-0 against Lichtenstein in 2024.

One of the startling facts of the story is that San Marino's goal hero, 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli, was not born when they last won a game.

The minnows have lost 196 of the 206 fixtures they have contested and were thrashed 10-0 by England in a World Cup qualifier back in November 2021.

But they have shown signs of improvement since then. In October last year they scored their first competitive goal in two years but were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Denmark in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

And in March they drew 0-0 with Caribbean side Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Surrounded by Italy and overlooked by the spectacular Mount Titano, San Marino has a population of just 33,000 and covers a mere 61 square kilometres - roughly half the size of Manchester.

  3. San Marino end 20-year wait for a victorypublished at 07:08 British Summer Time 6 September

    San Marino 1-0 Liechtenstein

San Marino made history by winning a competitive match for the first time with victory against Liechtenstein in the Nations League.

With the victory, the world's lowest ranked team by Fifa also ended the longest winless run in football, stretching back two decades and 140 games to when they won a friendly back in 2004 - also against Liechtenstein and by the same scoreline.

It is only their second ever victory.

The decisive goal on Thursday was scored by 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli, who plays in the Italian fourth tier.

The teenager struck in the 53rd minute, lobbing goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel to spark wild celebrations among the players.

San Marino then defended resolutely to secure the historic result after many years of heavy losses.

  5. Good morningpublished at 07:01 British Summer Time 6 September

I say good morning, but if you are a Scotland supporter it may not feel that way.

Steve Clarke's side battled back from two goals down to level against Poland at Hampden on Thursday night before giving away a penalty late in stoppage time.

Defeat in their Nations League opener continued a miserable run for Scotland in 2024 of just one win and five losses in 13 matches, and follows their tame exit from Euro 2024 after the group stages.

So plenty to ponder for Clarke, but it was a much better evening for Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill, whose side enjoyed a 2-0 win at home to Luxembourg.

And Cristiano Ronaldo marked another milestone, scoring his 900th career goal in Portugal's 2-1 win at home to Croatia.

Ronaldo and co await the Scots in their next Nations League match on Sunday.

Stick with us as we reflect on Thursday's matches and look ahead to this weekend's internationals - with Wales next up tonight and England playing on Saturday - as well as all the latest football news and transfer gossip.
