More from former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking about England interim manager Lee Carsley on The Football News Show: "The situation with Lee Carsley, he'll know a lot of these players, he's been in the FA set-up for a long time now, in the same way Gareth Southgate was when he took the job, and you'll look at the new players he's brought into the squad, they're players that he knows from the under-21s. He's put his own little stamp on it.

"He's very aware of the players, players will know him. It's not a manager coming in that nobody is aware of or nobody has a relationship with. There will be some kind of relationship with all the players, which will obviously help."

The international break has given Seamus Coleman the opportunity to escape Everton's troubles at the bottom of the Premier League and concentrate on representing Republic of Ireland in front of a sell-out 50,000 Aviva Stadium crowd against England.

"There is no God-given right to play for your country," adds the captain who is set to win his 73rd senior cap for the Republic.

"We’re fully prepared and looking forward to it."

On new manager Heimir Hallgrímsson: "He has come into a good group of lads who are desperate to do well for Ireland. We wish him all the best on the journey ahead."

Republic of Ireland v England (Sat, 17:00 BST)

    The Football News Show

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has been on The Football News Show, speaking about England's upcoming match against Ireland. Here's what he had to say.

"It's similar [to having a new manager at a club], but it's obviously not the same because club managers spend every day with their players, international management is very different.

"As we know, you get very little time with the players, you get three or four days.

"Players play at the weekend, get a couple days of cool down and then you have match prep ready for the weekend.

"There's not a lot that you can coach or put into a team other than set them up tactically and be aware of how to beat your opponent at the weekend."

Paul Lambert warned Scotland boss Steve Clarke about blooding too many young players at the same time.

Well, that is the big question for England's new interim manager Lee Carsley, who named four uncapped players in his first squad.

Will today's training session give any clues about how many of those players - Tino Livramento, Angel Gomes, Noni Madueke and Morgan Gibbs-White - will get on the pitch against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday?

Probably not, but it will be fun looking for clues.

That training session will be streamed live at the top of this page and is due to start at 11:00 BST.

Scotland have five more matches in the Nations League group stages and they don't get any easier, with a trip to face Portugal on Sunday.

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

A final word from former Scotland captain Paul Lambert, who has backed Steve Clarke's side to recover from their recent poor run of results: "We've come a long way since Steve's taken over. We were in a real bad place, I thought, before Steve took over the national team.

"He's galvanised it, he's galvanised the fans. But now there's the hangover from the Euros, which everybody understands, with the optimism we were walking in with.

"That's happened over the years, it's happened in my time."

However, Lambert warned about refreshing the core group with too many younger players: "There's a big calamity bringing the younger ones in. For me, you can't blend them all in one time. He's got a really good core. You can't make wholesale changes, we just don't have the players to do it.

"The core group should drive it on and they will, but they've got the spirit and that will take them a long way. They've got that and if they can keep that, then that is half the battle for them."

Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman is asked about the reception Lee Carsley, Declan Rice and Jack Grealish - who have all represented Ireland at different levels - will receive from fans in Dublin.

England interim boss Carsley played 40 times for the Republic of Ireland. Rice played three friendly games before switching allegiance and Grealish represented them at youth level.

"They chose who they wanted to represent," said Everton defender Coleman, who is set to win his 73rd cap this weekend.

"I can only speak of Declan. He's a good guy, top player. I just want the lads to represent Ireland and we have got that.

"It's been a few years [since they played for the Republic], its not something that concerns me."

While Scotland are without a win at home in five matches, their form on the road has not been much better this year.

In fact, the team have only won one game in 2024, a 2-0 friendly victory over Gibraltar.

The year began with two friendly losses against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland. Next was the Gibraltar win but they couldn't maintain momentum and drew to Finland next time out.

Then came the Euros, where Scotland finished as the worst-performing side in the tournament - thrashed 5-1 by hosts Germany in the opening game before drawing with Switzerland and losing to Hungary.

Thursday's defeat to Poland was their first outing since the Euros.

Republic of Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson is asked about his memories of that night when Iceland beat England at Euro 2016.

"I hope we can have same result tomorrow," says Hallgrímsson, who was joint head coach of Iceland eight years ago.

"We were just speaking about it in the car [on the way here]. That night was special. Nothing that England tried that night succeeded. It was one of those days.

"It is a totally different England team [we are facing on Saturday]. The technical skills and speed is much higher. They are coming off a good tournament. They come here on a high and have players who play in the Champions League day in and day out."

Scotland have not won a game at home in the past five matches which is their longest run since November 2008.

The last time the team won at home was in June 2023, when they recorded a 2-0 victory over Georgia.

    Since then they have:

    • Lost 3-1 to England
    • Drawn 3-3 with Norway
    • Lost 1-0 to Northern Ireland
    • Drawn 2-2 against Finland
    • And lost 3-2 to Poland.

Scotland forward Lyndon Dykes echoed Paul Lambert's analysis in his post-match comments.

He said: "We thought we were the better team, but it's frustrating the way it went. You can’t be conceding that many goals.

"There’s been a few changes on the training pitch. We’ve been working on a lot of things.

"I think you could see we were trying to press high and be the dominant team on the ball and make chances. We did all that, it just wasn’t our night.

"We need to go back to basics. We know what we are capable of and we need to stick together because we are a family, and I’m sure the results will come again."

  14. Two penalties were 'preventable'published at 10:22 British Summer Time 6 September

    Scotland 2-3 Poland

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Former Scotland captain Paul Lambert spoke about Scotland's 3-2 loss to Poland on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast: "I thought we played pretty decent last night - coming back from 2-0 down is good going, especially against a team like Poland, who I thought weren't too bad.

"The lads did really well to come back but I think Steve [Clarke] said last night, the two errors, even the first goal, I'm not sure you'd be hitting from that distance to score.

"The two penalties were definitely preventable. I think Grant [Hanley] went with the wrong leg anyways [in giving away the late penalty]. The lad wasn't going anywhere, he knew right away. But I thought Scotland weren't too bad, even when they lost the game."

Scotland's Billy Gilmour had a bumpy evening as he lost possession in midfield which led to one of Poland's goals but he also scored himself.

Here are his comments after the game: "We showed in good spells what we’ve been building on, but tonight we’re disappointed going down to a defeat.

"We know what we’re capable of and we need to believe a bit more.

"Over the years we’ve been getting better and better.

"Tonight’s disappointing but I think for spells we controlled the game, we got ourselves back into it, but we’ll look at it as a team and see where we can better.’’

  16. 'I'm just sorry fans are going home sad again'published at 10:15 British Summer Time 6 September

    Scotland 2-3 Poland

Thursday night's defeat for Scotland against Poland, which came after they battled back from 2-0 down only to concede a decisive third goal from a stoppage-time penalty, has heaped pressure on the shoulders of manager Steve Clarke.

The Scotland boss, who has led the side to just one win from 13 matches in 2024, said post-match: "Disappointed to lose a game like that, a game we shouldn't lose but if you make errors at this level you get punished.

"Lots of good things but it's still a defeat. Everyone is disappointed. It's not about picking out individuals, I never do that and I'm not going to start now. We win as a team, we lose as a team. We'll analyse the game and speak in camp.

"It's a small comfort for a head coach in that we didn't have a lot of time to work on the training pitch, we knew Poland would cause us one or two different issues but I thought we handled it well.

"A fantastic atmosphere, I'm just sorry they're going home sad again."
