Jean-Philippe Mateta struck twice to help Crystal Palace into the EFL Cup third round
Crystal Palace overcame Norwich City at Selhurst Park to claim their first win of the season and reach the Carabao Cup third round.
Daichi Kamada opened the scoring in just the second minute with his first Palace goal, running on to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s pass before rounding goalkeeper George Long and poking into the empty net.
Norwich nearly equalised when Gabriel Forsyth struck the outside of the post and Eberechi Eze had a goal disallowed, before the home side doubled their advantage through Mateta’s acrobatic finish 11 minutes into the second half.
Mateta made it 3-0 with a thumping finish from Eze's delivery midway through the second half, before Eze got his name on the scoresheet at the end of a marauding run.
The result was harsh on Norwich, who also went close through Ante Crnac and Marcelino Nunez in the first half and reached the interval in the ascendancy.
Mateta’s overhead kick from Kamada’s cross doubled Palace's lead, but the Canaries continued to trouble Oliver Glasner’s side and were denied by a fantastic double save by Dean Henderson not long after the home side’s second.
The 27-year-old blocked Crnac’s shot with his right foot before stopping substitute Oscar Schwartau from the follow-up.
However, Mateta’s confident finish all but ended their hopes of forging a route back into the contest, and Eze compounded their misery with a fine solo goal late on.
Both teams suffered injury blows in the early stages of the contest, with Chadi Riad hurting his knee while attempting to block Forsyth's effort and Amankwah Forson appearing to dislocate his shoulder as he tried to dispossess Will Hughes.
Palace are next in action at Chelsea on Sunday, but there could be plenty of movement on the transfer front before the weekend, with the Eagles closing in on the signing of striker Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal.
Newcastle also remain keen on signing centre-back Marc Guehi before the window closes on Friday.
