A first chance for Atletico Madrid as a pull-back is hit by a side-footed effort from Fiamma. The shot, from 12 yards out, may have tested Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the United goal, but her skipper Maya le Tissier gets the block in anyway. Good defending.

Atletico's Synne Jensen thinks she is through on goal, but only because she shoved United captain Maya le Tissier to the ground and is rightly penalised.

At the other end, Jayde Riviere's long throw is flicked on at the near post by Elisabeth Terland and Fridolina Rolfo, shooting on the turn, can't keep her effort down with it zipping harmlessly over the bar.

Atletico try to thread a ball into the danger zone, but Dominique Janssen is across well covering and is able to launch a clearance away for a throw-in.

The players of Atletico Madrid can be very good going forward, as we've seen with their league form, and I'm sure Man Utd will be very aware of that.

Another chance for Manchester United. Elisabeth Terland gets the ball on the edge of the Atletico penalty area and finds Fridolina Rolfo to her left. She cuts inside and looks to curl the ball into the top corner but gets her angles just wrong with the effort going wide. United getting closer.

United are looking a threat every time they go forwards. Ella Toone's pass is just ahead of Elisabeth Terland, who is denied by Lola Gallardo in the home goal.

But the visitors quickly regain the ball, although Jayde Riviere's cross from the right side of the penalty area can't find a team-mate. A bright start from the English side.

It's a very quick start by Man Utd showing they mean business.

This will be an interesting one. I think the start of the game will be each team trying to figure each other out.

Almost a dream start for Marc Skinner's side as they have a shot at goal after only 18 seconds. Melvine Malard does well to hold up the ball and it drops for Ella Toone, but the Lionesses star doesn't get a clean contact and her 20-yard effort loops wide of goal.

And away we go. Manchester United, in their all black kit, get us under way.

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner, speaking on Disney+: "I think we need to be ruthless. The team we’re playing, I thought Valerenga were good, but this is a different level of opponent at their home venue with very good players.

"I think we need to make it easier for ourselves by taking those chances. I think we can create them tonight, but we have to start by stopping Atleti's quality that they clearly have. We’re good defensively, that’s clearly a strength of ours.

"We respect the frontline they have, high quality and dangers throughout, so we need to make sure we’re in a good, focused mood, and if we are, then I’m sure we can create damage."

We know Manchester United at home are very strong. I think what they can pride themselves on is that they're difficult to beat themselves, very strong defensively, and they can build on that.

They know they're coming into a game, away from home against a Spanish team that really likes to dominate possession, so they'll have a lot of work to do and they'll have to be patient.

Manchester United's maiden Champions League campaign continues with a tough trip to Atletico Madrid.

Manager Marc Skinner, who oversaw a 1-0 home victory over Norwegian side Valerenga in last week’s opener, said: “We’re excited, we’re looking forward to playing Atleti.

“They’re a fantastic team, a fantastic club. We know how good we are, we believe in ourselves, but we also know we’re facing a really tough challenge.”

Just like how the men's Champions League was last season and this season, the Women's Champions League has all the teams in one league table.

Each side plays six opponents, three at home and three away. The top four advance straight to the quarter-finals and those finishing fifth to 12th play in the knockout play-off round to discover the other four quarter-finalists.

Anyone coming 13th or worse is eliminated.

Three of the powerhouses in women's football have played two and won two - with Barcelona, Wolfsburg and Lyon (who have 13 European titles between them) all on six points.

Atletico Madrid boss Victor Martin names the same side that secured a huge 6-0 away win against St Polten on matchday one, meaning midfielder Vilde Boe Risa starts against her former side.

Leah Galton is named on the bench once again after getting her first minutes of the season at the weekend, yet Jess Park, who played the entirety of the matchday one win over Valerenga misses out with concussion.

Barcelona continued their impressive start to the season with a convincing 4-0 win at Roma in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday.

The Catalan outfit, with a 100 per cent record after seven games in Liga F went ahead early on through Esmee Brugts with further goals coming from Kika Nazareth, Alexia Putellas – who scored a penalty after earlier missing from the spot – and Caroline Graham Hansen.

Eight-time winners Lyon maintained their winning start with an impressive 3-0 win over Austrian side St Polten at the Groupama Stadium. Eighteen-year-old United States international Lily Yohannes completed victory with a spectacular long-range lob from just beyond the centre circle.

That came after Ada Hegerberg, the Champions League’s most prolific goalscorer, had extended her own competition record with a 67th goal in her 77th appearance. Jule Brand was also on target for the French side with a first-half header.

Janina Minge scored a 98th-minute winning penalty as Wolfsburg snatched a 2-1 victory at Valerenga. Lineth Beerensteyn had put Wolfsburg ahead, before Sara Horte headed in an equaliser three minutes later, although the Germans then won it in dramatic fashion.

Leuven produced a late fightback to beat Twente 2-1. Jaimy Ravensbergen put the Dutch side 1-0 up at half-time but Linde Veefkind levelled from the spot after 82 minutes and Sara Pusztai won it in stoppage time.

Club record signing Alyssa Thompson scored her first goal as a dominant Chelsea emphatically beat Paris FC in the Women's Champions League.

The Blues begun their European campaign with a 1-1 draw at FC Twente last week. Sonia Bompastor's side were gifted the opener against Paris FC when Sjoeke Nusken was judged to have been fouled in the area after a video assistant referee (VAR) check and Sandy Baltimore rifled home from the spot.

Erin Cuthbert snatched possession in midfield and fed Thompson out wide, who found Johanna Rytting Kaneryd in the area to head past Mylene Chavas for the second.

It took less than 90 seconds into the second half for 20-year-old United States forward Thompson to inflict further damage on Paris, prodding home a drilled Keira Walsh pass at the back post.

Paris never looked like finding a path back into the game and Chelsea extended their lead when the visitors failed to clear after substitute Sam Kerr headed a Baltimore corner towards goal, allowing Cuthbert to tap in on the line.

Victory means Chelsea have four points from their opening two matches in Europe and are unbeaten in all competitions after eight games this season.
