Northampton and Cambridge played out a blustery League One goalless draw as Storm Bert swept through Sixfields on a wretched afternoon.

In a poor contest that lacked quality, superb defending denied Tyler Roberts an early tap-in before home goalkeeper Lee Burge saved with his legs from Brandon Njoku.

Cambridge had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half and they dominated territorially but both teams struggled in the horrible conditions.

Sam Hoskins curled a shot just wide and Elias Kachunga wastefully blazed over at the other end but the weather continued to get the better of both sides and goalmouth action remained at a premium throughout.

If anyone, Cambridge were the side who took the initiative and sensed an opportunity and a good chance did fall to Shayne Lavery but he snatched at the ball and missed the target.

The closest either side went to winning the match came with 11 minutes to play when Cambridge broke forward and Burge kept out Lavery’s shot before Nesta Guinness-Walker brilliantly blocked Kachunga’s follow-up effort.
