My bold and maybe deluded prediction is Arsenal to win the Premier League this season.

    Ben

Liverpool to win the league and Forest to sustain a title challenge but finish second. Would love to appear on the BBC site and have my name up in lights!

Prediction for 2025 - Pompey make a late run and snatch sixth place and beat Burnley at Wembley to win the play-offs to the Premier League, and then sit top of the Premier League going into 2026 as Colby Bishop and Callum Lang score for fun in the top flight before scoring the goals to lead England to World Cup glory!

  4. NI show real progress under O'Neillpublished at 15:24 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

Northern Ireland will head into the unknown in 2025 as manager Michael O'Neill plots a hopeful course for the 2026 World Cup.

O'Neill's youthful side has been drawn in a qualifying group alongside Slovakia and Luxembourg, with the top seeds yet to be decided.

The winners of Germany and Italy's Nations League quarter-final in March will head the group.

A big positive for Northern Ireland is the fact they will have a number of chances to progress to the World Cup finals in North America, either by traditional route or via a play-off place secured courtesy of topping their Nations League group in 2024.

"We've already given ourselves a chance of that with our Nations League group, so there's a lot for us to go in with a lot of positivity," said O'Neill after finishing the year on a positive note.

"We know we'll be competitive in this group. There's no doubt about that. We just have to make sure we continue with the progression of the team."

Man City to make a remarkable recovery to finish second as Arsenal, Chelsea and Forest all fade. Maybe win the FA Cup as well to rescue a disappointing season. Liverpool look like champions all day long.

    Paul, Coychurch, South Wales

Villa to win the Champions League.

  6. January transfer window opens tomorrowpublished at 15:19 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

In the midst of the drama that is New Year's Eve, we've got to remind you that the January transfer window opens tomorrow!

Clubs can start making moves for players in a matter of hours.

It's the best time of the year for some and the worst for others. There is the excitement of new signings being announced for one group of fans and the anxiety of your star player getting plucked away by another.

Will any of the title challengers pull off a marquee signing in this window to strengthen their bid? Will those looming down the bottom make moves in an effort to retain their Premier League status?

    Time will tell...

  7. January transfer window - who could be on the move?published at 15:16 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

Barcelona midfielder Dani OlmoImage source, Getty Images

    Marcus Rashford (Man Utd)

It currently feels like a case of when Marcus Rashford will leave Manchester United, rather than if he will. The 27-year-old forward said in an interview in mid-December that he is "ready for a new challenge" amid uncertainty over his Old Trafford future.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

With Liverpool favourites to win the Premier League, looking good in the Champions League and in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, the overtures of Real Madrid might be resisted for the scouser, but for how long?

    Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad)

Zubimendi, who helped Spain win Euro 2024, reportedly has a £51.7m release clause in his contract. "I'm happy with the way I'm handling it," Zubimendi said of the ongoing speculation over his future before the transfer window. With Sociedad in mid-table he is not likely to be short of offers.

    Ben Chilwell (Chelsea)

Maresca said Chilwell was among the players "thinking to leave" and the club will "try to find a solution" depending on what offers materialise for the left-back, who has won 21 caps for England. His wages seem to make a loan move most likely.

    Dani Olmo (Barcelona)

Barcelona lost another appeal to register Spain forward Dani Olmo for the rest of the season - one day before the deadline.

They now face a race against time to find an alternative plan to register Olmo or he could become a free agent, with Premier League clubs reportedly interested.

My predictions as an Arsenal fan, we will score more goals from set pieces than from open play. We still won't sign a proper striker. We will finish top four but not win a trophy. Bayern will knock us out of the Champions League.

    Guy, Nottingham.

Ipswich will survive and Forest will win the league.

  9. Big stories to come in 2025published at 15:10 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

There have been plenty of big stories over the course of this year and it's already looking likely that 2025 will follow suit.

Manchester City will finally hear the verdict to their 115 charges. We have got new VAR rulings being trialled in the EFL Cup with other new developments likely to follow. There will be a resolution one way or another to the contract situation of a certain Liverpool trio. We'll get our first look at the new Champions League format in the knockout stages. Liverpool may win the league. Nottingham Forest could win the league! And that's just scratching the surface.

It's the drama Mick, I just love it!

  11. Bright new dawn for Wales under Bellamypublished at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

Craig Bellamy holds a team talkImage source, Getty Images

Wales missed out on the Euros finals and manager Rob Page paid the price, losing his job in June after three-and-a-half years in charge.

He was replaced by former Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy, who signed a four-year deal in July, and kicked off his tenure with a six-match unbeaten run in the Nations League.

Three draws and three wins, closing with a 4-1 victory over Iceland, secured an improbable return to the Nations League's top tier.

The new dawn continues in 2025 with a World Cup qualifying campaign. Wales have been drawn against Belgium, North Macedonia, Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein in Group J.

Striker Kieffer Moore sounded a confident note about their chances, saying if they continue to play Bellamy's brand of football then they can compete with Belgium for top spot and automatic qualification.

  16. Scotland's Euros party and a bitter after-tastepublished at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

Scotland fans celebrate in GermanyImage source, Getty Images

The Euros started in a blaze of colour and bonhomie for Scotland as what felt like the entire population descended on Germany prior to the tournament opener.

The glorious scenes of celebration in Munich before the Scots' match against the hosts really set the tone for what was largely a peaceful, good-natured few weeks.

Yet Germany's 5-1 win provided a bitter after-taste for the Tartan Army that they were never entirely able to shift.

Steve Clarke's men gave themselves a chance of progressing past the group stage of a major tournament for the first time with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland but hopes were dashed by a 1-0 defeat by Hungary.

A haul of seven points from their final three Nations League games set up a play-off with Greece in March - win that and Scotland will stave off relegation from Group A and offer renewed hope for the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign to follow.

  18. Hammers confirm Bowen fractured footpublished at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

    West Ham United

West Ham have confirmed captain Jarrod Bowen sustained a fractured foot injury in Sunday's 5-0 Premier League defeat by Liverpool.

The injury to his left foot, picked up in the first half at London Stadium, will sideline the 28-year-old heading into the New Year.

  19. Antonio discharged from hospital after car accidentpublished at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

    West Ham United

West Ham striker Michail Antonio has been discharged from hospital more than three weeks after sustaining a broken leg in a car accident.

Antonio, 34, had surgery on a lower limb fracture following the crash on 7 December.

The Jamaica international needed to be released from his car after becoming trapped during the incident in Epping, Essex, and was taken to a central London hospital.

Antonio is West Ham's all-time leading scorer in the Premier League, with 68 goals in 268 league appearances.
