We are not focused on title race - Enzo Maresca

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca told BBC Sport that his side "could have done many things better" after falling to a second successive defeat: "Strange game in terms of creating many chances and we could've scored many but they saved goals on the line or great saves from the keeper. We could do many things better, defend better in some moments."

On Ipswich's 12th-minute penalty, awarded after a VAR ruling that goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen had made sufficient contact to bring down Liam Delap as he dribbled past him: "They said it's a bit soft but we have to accept it's a penalty."

On the progress Chelsea have made after finishing sixth last season: "Now we've finished the first part of the season, no-one expected us to be where we are. We are in a good position but we can do many things better. It's a long race. We focus game by game. We are not focused on title race or those things."

  2. Liverpool lead the waypublished at 09:41 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

Just a reminder that Liverpool go into the new year with an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea had been mooted as a potential title challenger before dropping eight points in their last three matches.

Manager Enzo Maresca had warned that his young side - who are fourth, 10 points behind Liverpool - could lack the consistency needed to mount a sustained challenge...

I've seen a couple of posts last night and this morning suggesting that Liverpool's lead - and potential triumph in May - is somehow diminished by other so-called 'big six' clubs doing so poorly. I don't get that. The ebb and flow of football over the decades tells us that no-one stays at the top forever. Every team starts the season on zero points, you have to earn the right to be called a big team, and if you don't do that other teams will take their chance - but that in no way lessens what Liverpool are achieving.

"First win at Portman Road in the Premier League is a special one for the players and supporters."

  7. Today's poll: Where will Man Utd finish?published at 09:20 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

That brings us nicely to today's poll, which is at the top of this page.

Where do you think Manchester United will finish this season following Ruben Amorim's admission that relegation was a "possibility".

Perhaps surprisingly, Opta's latest predictions, external suggest United, who are currently 14th, are more likely to finish fifth (1.3%) than 18th (1.1%).

What do you think? Make your choice in the poll and we will bring you the results later on today.

  8. 'It is a relegation fight for Man Utd now'published at 09:14 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

    Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Former Manchester United midfielder Jesper Blomqvist speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast about the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United last night:

"It is a relegation fight for United now. I don’t think anyone wants to let Ruben Amorim down. The team are really looking out of form, there is no confidence at all.

"I admire [Amorim] and I think he’s being really honest all the time. I think there’s a light at the end of the tunnel but it’s hard at the moment."

On Joshua Zirkzee being substituted in the first-half: "It’s going to take a lot for him to rise up again. I admire Ruben for making that change after only 30 minutes for the best of the team."

Manchester United have got themselves into a real old mess.

It was clear Ruben Amorim's appointment represented a significant tactical change for the players he was inheriting following his mid-season move from Sporting.

But I doubt anyone thought the bedding-in process would be quite so tortuous.

It seems obvious some of the players are uncomfortable with the switch to a three-man defence and wing-backs, which led to Amorim being asked after the 2-0 home defeat by Newcastle whether he was willing to change his system.

The answer was an emphatic no.

"I have to sell my idea," he said. "If I change all the time it is going to be even worse.

"I understand they have a lot of difficulties because they spent two years playing one way and now they are playing another. With a lot of losses, it is really tough on them. You can feel it, during the game I can feel it but I have to sell my idea because I don't have another one.

"When you have a change of coach, especially in this type of club, it is because they were not winning. They played in the system they were bought for and were chosen perfectly for that system. After two years, working in pre-season, they were losing.

"So am I going to change to that system to something that I don't believe in? That doesn't make sense."

    The good old shepherd's crook.

Getting taken off before half-time is rare in football, and after a dreadful opening period, Joshua Zirkzee was off after 33 minutes.

Did he do anything wrong? Was the system wrong? His replacement being midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was not exactly like-for-like.

As a Newcastle fan I would be thrilled with 4th in the league, however, as the league is so close I would take 5th or 6th! A trophy would be a dream come true. We are playing well, injuries seem to be easing so who knows? As to last night, should have been 0-3 ish after 30 minutes, I thought it was a risk for Man Utd to play both Casemiro and Eriksen, perhaps their best days have gone? That said did they have a choice? Also, strange to bring Rashford back in and leave him on the bench? I can’t see Man Utd going down, I just can’t. Liverpool to win the league, just!! Happy New Year to all.

  13. 'I do not know how Zirkzee recovers from that'published at 08:52 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

The midfield two of Casemiro and [Christian] Eriksen - we all highlighted it before the game and said it would be a problem and it was.

[Joshua] Zirkzee was the player that was dragged off but it could have been Eriksen or it could have been Casemiro. Zirkzee is a new signing - it was harsh. He's only 23-years-old. That's difficult for him and the reaction he got from the crowd as he exited the pitch - they booed. How he recovers from that, I don't know. It is going to take some serious mental resilience for him to recover from that.

Why was Casemiro still on the pitch? He was abysmal in the first half and that is me saying that about a player I've admired a lot over the years. Casemiro was way off it and Eriksen was way off it, but Zirkzee took the brunt of it.

rethanon on X: Amorim plays a different system with the players he inherited and we keep losing - surely a great manager can play a system that suits the players they have until they get the players in they want? Instead of bullishly sticking to 3-4-3 with players out of position.

He is essentially being cheered off by his own fans. He has not been good but they have all been poor. You are watching the worst pound-for-pound team in the country.

What Man Utd needed was new owners who could come in and have an instant positive impact and a new manager who could have an immediate positive effect on results. What did the club get? Ticket price increases, redundancies to help pay the wages of overpriced players not good enough, instability among the senior leadership team, a new manager who cannot work with the aforementioned overpriced players and speculation in the press over whether the club could be relegated. How they must long for the days of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and second-place finishes.

    Martin, Derby

Ah yes, Manchester United did finish second under Solskjaer in 2020-21, albeit 12 points behind champions Manchester City. They also finished second under Jose Mourinho in 2017-18, this time 19 points behind winners City.

  17. 'I am really sorry for Josh'published at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

    Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim on taking off Joshua Zirkzee in the first half: "That is really simple when the game starts and finishes for people to address. The idea was different. It was a real tough moment for Josh [Zirkzee] and I felt that I had to do something in that moment. I don't like to do that to my players.

"In that moment the team was suffering and I made the decision thinking of the team. I am really sorry for Josh.

"You can feel it [low confidence] every single day which is a bad thing, but it is also a good thing because they are feeling. It is hard for them to cope with the losses on the pitch, but we have to continue. There is no other way."

The move, replacing him with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, was roundly applauded by Manchester United supporters in the ground, while Zirkzee promptly marched down the tunnel before returning to take his place on the bench.

It was not a good night at all. Tonight was a reflection on the players, I think it is probably deeply ingrained in the players, the standards have dropped for a long time now. That was evident tonight

It is going to take a long time for Ruben Amorim to lift things up. The spotlight is on him and he is taking it but as players, no matter who your manager is, you can't play like you did tonight.

It's a matter of personal pride and that first half was terrible, I was actually shocked that Newcastle only went in 2-0 up.
