1. History will judge Southgate's England reignpublished at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

Time will tell how the Three Lions' 2024 will be judged.

The history books will say that Gareth Southgate led England to a second consecutive Euros final where they just fell short with a 2-1 defeat against a talented young Spain side.

Their route to the final included some thrilling moments, such as Jude Bellingham's acrobatic equaliser against Slovakia, a clinical display of penalty-taking to beat the Swiss in the quarter-finals and Ollie Watkins' late winner to see off the Netherlands in the last four.

Even the final had its moments. Cole Palmer gave the nation hope with his second-half equaliser, but, in the end, it just wasn't meant to be.

Gareth Southgate - now Sir Gareth Southgate - stepped down after eight years in charge, ultimately handing over the reins to Thomas Tuchel.

Lee Carsley's brief stint in interim charge ensured promotion back to the top-tier of the Nations League and, as 2025 beckons, the challenge is now to take England that next, final step, and actually win something.

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast about the level of pressure at Old Trafford and if it's different to other clubs:

"Absolutely different. I always say it's a club, when you go in, you won't realize that every front and back page of newspapers, anywhere in the world, talk about Manchester United. It's just so big. It's so worldly renowned. And that's why from my point of view, I see it as the biggest club in the world.

"But it will not be making good news because the position they are in just now is not a position Manchester United would be would be sort of used to probably ever.

"I'm sure, there's probably been times where it's been that way, but I think at the moment, they will be disappointed that they're not doing better in the league."

  6. 'It is worrying where Man Utd are currently at'published at 13:55 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

    Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    Gary Neville
Former Manchester United defender on Sky Sports

Speaking of Gary Neville, here is what he had to say on Manchester United's defeat by Newcastle:

That team under the last game of Ole Gunnar Solskaer is far better than the team now and that's the concern - there has been another £450-500m spent since that period.

What we thought were the worst moments in the last seven or eight years, they are gradually getting worse - we haven't hit the low point yet.

That team that played out there won't win a lot of football matches. Manchester United have spent £1.5b in the last 10 years - £500m in the last five years.

I was excited by the signings in the summer, nobody thought they would make the side worse they were thinking they were a step up but it's not proving to be the case.

I'm really worried, actually. I think it's worrying where Manchester United are currently at.

Thought I’d say thanks to the BBC Sport staff for great coverage this year! Everyone can complain about pundits, coverage by the papers, nonsense on Twitter, but BBC Sport is always reliable, sensible and on time. That's not something we should ever take for granted, especially when sensationalism sells. Looking forward to next year!

Favourite moment has to be that Bellingham bicycle kick in the Euros. We weren’t great that game and for Bellingham to pull that from his locker in the last minutes to eventually take us to the quarter-finals was incredible.

Arsenal players celebrate after scoring against Ipswich TownImage source, Getty Images

What would the Premier League table look like if it had run from January to December?

Well, Manchester City wouldn't be champions and neither would current leaders Liverpool. It would be Mikel Arteta's Arsenal lifting the crown.

The Gunners picked up 85 points in 2024, the same amount as Arne Slot's Reds, however, Arsenal boast a better goal difference and played a game less - 36 to Liverpool's 37.

Despite City's slump in 2024-25, they still sit comfortably in third, with Chelsea completing the top four after the positive start under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Wolves picked up the lowest number of points across 2024, compared with those teams that were in the Premier League for the entire year, with just 34 points. Everton had the second-lowest tally with 39.

Despite being in a relegation scrap in 2023-24, the brilliant form of Nottingham Forest this campaign sees them end the year in 11th.

Manchester City won the Premier League for a record fourth season in a row in 2023-24 but they weren't on top going into 2024 - current leaders Liverpool were with 45 points.

The Reds had a three-point lead over Aston Villa, who were in second at the time, and a five-point lead over City, though Pep Guardiola's side had played a game less.

Arsenal were also five points behind leaders Liverpool in fourth and rivals Tottenham were just a point behind them in fifth.

West Ham United were in sixth place under David Moyes while Manchester United, Brighton, Newcastle and Chelsea made up the top 10.

The bottom three were the three teams that eventually got relegated - Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United - with Everton and Brentford just above the drop zone in 17th and 16th respectively.

This season's surprise package Nottingham Forest were 15th and they had Crystal Palace, Fulham, Bournemouth and Wolves in front of them, completing the bottom half.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran has been charged by the Football Association with "acting in an improper manner" following his sending off at Newcastle on Boxing Day.

The 21-year-old Colombia forward kicked a water bottle on the touchline as he left the pitch at St James' Park.

He is already serving a three-match ban for the red card given by referee Anthony Taylor in the first half against Newcastle for a perceived stamp on defender Fabian Schar.

Villa went on to lose the match 3-0.

Duran, who missed Monday's draw at home to Brighton and will be unavailable for Villa's next two games at home to Leicester in the league and West Ham in the FA Cup, has until Friday (3 January) to respond to the charge.
