  2. 'We have several options and we also decided to rotate'published at 15:53 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

Everton v Crystal Palace (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on Adam Warton's injury and having four different midfield partnerships since the start of the season:

"Its not to find the right mix it’s about adjusting to what’s going on with players. Once, Will Hughes was a six we had Daichi Kamada at the beginning but then we needed him playing on the ten.

It’s just a natural part. We have several options and we also decided to rotate a little bit when we had three games."

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on Rob Holding not being included in a squad picture this week:

"Rob [Holding] is training with under 21’s and he will stay there and that’s why he was not in the picture."

Football is so confusing. It's a massive loss for City to lose Rodri, almost as though he's their most important player. They might have to buy a replacement. But, I was reliably informed by, erm, absolutely everyone, that Foden is the best player.

  5. 'We increased what we demanded from the players'published at 15:45 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

Everton v Crystal Palace (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on having a full squad at training for the first time this season:

This was the first week I have had a complete squad in training. I have experienced a lot in football but never been in this situation with a first training week with a full squad at this stage in September.

Against Manchester United we showed patterns that we don’t want to show. It is my job to be clear with the players and we used this first week together, we increased the training intensity, we increased what we demanded from the players.

It gives us confidence that we can fight to get the results. We will need this at Goodison Park against a very physical and direct team

It is Crystal Palace's first home game in the WSL and manager Laura Kaminski said on playing at Selhurst Park: "We’ve got some great memories. And yes, obviously, we had friends and family here that day [when we won the league at Selhurst Park in May] and we enjoyed it thoroughly.

"But we have to move on. Those memories become a little bit distant. They keep us together. They keep us remembering why we love the game, and they'll keep us motivated through tough times. We shared an unbelievable experience together at one of our homes, Selhurst.

"But now we must look forward and ultimately, we're here to work. We're here to perform and play. Like I said, every week we want to be better and really take the game to Chelsea."

And she added on taking on the Blues: "It’s a big opportunity, a big moment. But it's important that that doesn't overwhelm the squad, it doesn't overwhelm me. We've done so well to get in this position, and we need to remember that this is what we want to do for many years to come.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, who took over at the start of the season, has said on Palace: "We have to focus on ourselves. I want to give credit to Laura [Kaminski] and the job that she has done with Crystal Palace last season. They are now in the first division.

"This league is so competitive. I watched the game they had against Tottenham and I think the result was severe and didn’t reflect the game they had.

"We are ready to face an opponent who will be playing the first game at home. They will be ready to compete and make the job really hard for us."

The second round of the Women's Super League gets underway tonight with a London clash between Crystal Palace and defending champions Chelsea.

The Blues beat Aston Villa 1-0 on matchday one, while Palace fell to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham.

It will be a tricky feat for newly promoted Palace to get past Chelsea but the Blues have been caught out by promoted teams in the past. They lost 2-1 to Liverpool in the Reds first campaign back in the top-flight in the 2022/23 season.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou have both been criticised for the way their teams have started the season, but can one of them claim a vital win at Old Trafford on Sunday?

"There is a lot of scrutiny on this game, and in a negative way for both managers," BBC Sport's football expert Chris Sutton said.

"That's one of the reasons I am not going for a draw. It is going to be very close, but I feel like it will be one of those games where if it is level near the end, both teams will be pushing for a winner."

Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches this season, against a variety of guests.

For week six, he takes on Maximo Park singer Paul Smith, whose latest album, Stream Of Life, is out on Friday.

  10. 29,000 gambling ads in Premier League weekendpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

The number of betting adverts during the opening weekend of the Premier League season almost trebled compared to last year, new research says.

Researchers analysed Premier League coverage in the UK across TV - including pitchside hoardings and shirt logos - as well as radio and social media.

They counted more than 29,000 gambling messages, a 165% increase on the opening weekend a year ago.

West Ham's match against Aston Villa contained close to 6,500 gambling messages - about 30 every minute.

The authors of the report - the University of Bristol business school, funded by a grant from the charity Gamble Aware - has called the industry's attempt to self-regulate "wholly inadequate and tokenistic".

They say their report shows fans and children are being put at risk because they are being exposed to gambling advertising.

The Betting and Gaming Council, which represents the gambling industry, criticised the research, saying it "fundamentally misunderstands both advertising, and the way in which it is strictly regulated".

  11. 'Way too early' to call a 'must-win' fixture for Lopeteguipublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

Brentford v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has been asked if tomorrow's game is a 'must-win' fixture for West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui:

"I think it's way, way way too early.

"In such a volatile and complex world of football, you can't just rely on five games [results] to talk about that".

Well, that blows the title race open. After their last minute (undeserved) equaliser on Sunday, they were looking ominous. But, without their best player, things could change.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on who will and won't not be in the squad to face Everton this weekend:

“Matheus Franca and Trevoh Chalobah are available, but França won’t be in the squad after it was his first complete week with us. After almost six months, it would be unfair to him to be in the squad but he feels well and he has no problems.

“Trevoh will be win the squad, and he is available, but we lost Chris Richards this week. He is not available for the next week as he has a hamstring injury.

“The other players are available. It’s Cheick Doucouré and Chadi Riad who can’t play, but the others had a good week and we go with confidence into Liverpool.”

  14. Frank says Brentford have a 'plan' for scoring earlypublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

Brentford v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank on his team scoring very early in the last two matches: "We work on it. No doubt about it. We have a clear plan for it. Obviously we know it's difficult to score every single time from a kick-off.

"We have players around where the ball drops and then we play from there and then maybe teams are not ready. We were definitely ready, I think that's the most important thing."

But on going on to lose after taking the lead, Frank said: "Our aim is always to try and score one more goal. You get two [goals] up- that's the aim and the philosophy- that can be a little bit difficult sometimes against any team in the Premier League but especially, for example, the two sides we faced, in [Manchester] City and Tottenham".

  15. 'We will use Duran and Watkins together more'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

Ipswich Town v Aston Villa (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery on Jhon Duran's game time and form: "He’s involved in focussing like I want. He’s playing like an impact [substitute, doing] very well, but playing like he did on Tuesday, Carabao Cup match, 90 minutes, he played fantastic.

"It is my challenge as well to try to get the best of him playing as a striker, playing with (Ollie) Watkins as well. Some minutes we have played, and we will play them more together.

"Now, we are in with the players in the squad tactically, for players like him, the best thing we can feel, we will get good performances individually and collectively with those players."

  16. 'We need to improve collectively and individually'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

Ipswich Town v Aston Villa (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery on recent results: "Every match we play in has been a different game plan because to compete with a game plan is to adapt and try to impose our game plan.

"Ipswich Town is different but difficult, like the match before. We are trying to build a team. We have to try to get stronger tactically with our players. Some players are in the process, we want to increase our levels individually and collectively through them and the process has been positive because we are getting points in this way.

"But of course, we have to improve a lot of things individually and collectively. The match we played against Wolverhampton was very good to analyse deeply how we were playing before as well in the Champions League. Emotionally, it was very difficult [in a] way, but we finished very good.

"Sometimes, the result is not giving us every formation being positive because sometimes, we are winning but we are needing to change something to improve because maybe, in our matches, it is not enough to get to the other side like we are."

  18. 'We are not being efficient enough'published at 14:44 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

Bournemouth v Southampton (Mon, 20:00 BST)

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola on only two teams having more shots than his side in the Premier League this season: "I'm happy because we are having the shots and chances, so we are creating a lot offensively. But it is true that we're not being efficient enough. My experience in football is that if you continue doing these things, then you get the reward. But it isn't guaranteed, so we need to demand more in the final third."

On showing improvements already this season, Iraola added: "We have a very difficult start to the season, so every game we play against a 'non-European team' we have to get points in. Otherwise we will be in trouble, because after we will have more difficult games."

  19. Virus hits Wolves' preparations ahead of Liverpool visitpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

Wolves v Liverpool (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Wolves' squad has been hit by a virus ahead of the visit of Liverpool on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Dan Bentley was ill last week and several of his team-mates are now major doubts for the Molineux clash.

Boss Gary O'Neil did not reveal who could miss the game - with Wolves winless and bottom of the Premier League - but some players will need to be assessed in the morning.

"There is quite a bit of illness at the moment, there are a few who will need a check on how they are feeling," he said. "Quite a few missed training today.

"Some of the lads will struggle for tomorrow, whether they don't quite make it or are not fit enough to start. Sometimes it can clear up in 24 hours.

"We are hopeful that all of the guys who have had something over the last couple of days will be fine. But, as the doctors told me, at this stage it's difficult to give a definitive answer."

  20. 'Everyone is available, but we still have almost three days'published at 14:38 British Summer Time 27 September 2024

Bournemouth v Southampton (Mon, 20:00 BST)

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola admitted that team news is "difficult" to assess due to the game still being three days away: "We are only on Friday and we play on Monday night, so I'm not sure what is going to happen. Right now, everyone is available - apart from Tyler [Adams]. They have all been training and I hope everyone is available for Monday night, but we still have almost three days."

Iraola praised youngster Tyler Dibling, who has appeared in all five Premier League games so far this season: "He looks very good. He has made the difference in some games. It's not usual to play like this when you are 18-years-old. He is one of the threats that Southampton will have to defend."
