He says all the right things in public, but Isak has really got into Ekitike's head the last few weeks! Why else is he holding his shirt up to show his name in the third round against Southampton? I don't mind if he keeps scoring though!

  4. 'Not many teams press Chelsea how we pressed them'published at 22:43 BST 23 September

    FT: Lincoln City 1-2 Chelsea

Lincoln boss Micheal Skubala speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We haven't got the result so we are a bit frustrated, but when you look at the performance the lads in the first half were magnificent. Not many teams press Chelsea how we pressed them tonight.

"We were so aggressive and got on top of the game. For the first 15 minutes they could not get out of their third, we hit the post early, and we create an atmosphere here and the fans are amazing, so I am really proud of the overall performance.

"Huge respect to Enzo [Maresca] because he has brought some big players here. Looking at the players on the pitch towards the end we were still trying to get something. A period of five minutes of quality that they have has hurt us."

On the quick turnaround from Chelsea: "We knew at half time that they might change to a 2-2 in midfield, and they did that. We knew it was going to happen but we became a bit passive on it. We became passive on our jumping and when that happens the quality shows because they get a lot more space.

"The ball drops to him [George] and it's a great finish. If the ball hits the outside of the post then that's a bit of luck. And then after that we probably get a bit spooked. But I thought we regrouped well and we started to get back on top of things and didn't quite create enough big chances."

  6. 'These games give you confidence that you can score a lot'published at 22:40 BST 23 September

    FT: Barnsley 0-6 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "If I had to decide my favourite [Gomez] goal then it would be the second or third. But it is not only the goals that we are happy with, how he works for the team too.

"Defensively he was always there, especially against the rotations from Barnsley on the left hand side. He took it seriously and that is what we demand. he is a great offensive plyer, he can create and shoot, and today he proved it."

On if this result was a statement of intent: "Unfortunately six goals only bring you one round further, not two or three, every game is new and starts from zero, so the next opponent will be another tough game. Every cup game is 50-50.

"Of course these games give you confidence that you can score a lot of goals and outplay a defensive team, and we saw in other rounds that it's not so easy to beat these teams. First you have to dominate the game and then score the goals and in the last rounds we achieved this and we were pleased with this."

  7. 'I have never seen that in my life before'published at 22:38 BST 23 September

    FT: Lincoln City 1-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Malo Gusto goes down under a challengeImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea defender Malo Gusto speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was a tough game. We knew already before w come here that they play a lot with set pieces and try to bully them.

"The first half was very complicated for us to get into the game but second half was much better because w. e came back with more energy and more desire. We kept fighting on the pitch in the second half and I think that's why we won. Very happy to get into the next round."

On Lincoln's approach to the game: "The way that they play I have never seen that in my life before, but that is their qualities and they tried to win the game. So we had to deal with that and I think we did quite well today."

On Maresca's half time message: "It was more about fight. They are taller than us but we have to fight. If they are taller then we have to show that we want it more, and that's what we did better in the second half."

On the stop-start beginning to the season: "The two previous games were quite hard for us but today was good for us to get back to winning ways and to keep building confidence as a team. The next game against Brighton we go with more confidence and more desire."

  8. 'It was not an easy game'published at 22:36 BST 23 September

    FT: Lincoln City 1-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We knew that it was a very tricky game because they are the most direct team in league one, so crosses, free kicks, throw ins into the box, you have to defend those. We struggled a little bit in the first half but second half we were much better and we won the game.

"It was not an easy game. I told them (the players) it was not an easy game. That is why I was so annoyed in the first half, because we know that we needed to do better. Overall, they did well."

On Guiu's absence from the squad: "The reason why is because yesterday in the game preparation he felt something, nothing important, but with Liam Delap already out we did not want to take a risk. So tonight we give Ty [George] and Jamie a chance."

  9. 'Not best performance'published at 22:33 BST 23 September

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Southampton

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot speaking to ITV:

"Not our best performance. You can expect that if you play a complete new team. So many players that haven't played for a long time. There were positives, Giorgi Mamardashvili had a good game, Federico Chiesa and Giovanni Lioni had a good game. A first goal for Alexander [Isak] and another from Hugo [Ekitike].

"Positives from the game but how we played as a team - not taking anything away from Southampton because they played well - it wasn't our best performance."

Well, I guess that's Isak starting against Palace then. At least Chiesa will also now have a chance to play as well as Isak's rotational option. Both of them were great today.

    Fraser

Not even a Liverpool fan, but I love Chiesa. He's like the Liverpool Golden Retriever. Loyal, always there when you need him, He could score against me and I'd applaud him. He always seems to find something to improve the situation, What a steal at the price they paid.

  11. Postpublished at 22:28 BST 23 September

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Southampton

    Liverpool

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak, speaking to ITV Sport: "Amazing. It was good to get back out there and score my first goal here and get the win as well. A good night.

"I should have scored earlier as well. It is part of being a striker, you miss some and score some. The most important thing is to shake it off and be ready for the next one.

"I feel confident in myself that things will work out and when I get chances I will put them away."

On being ready to start this weekend: "I feel good. With every game I play it is very helpful and gets me in better shape.

"It is difficult to say. It is a mixture of fitness wise and football wise. I feel good and feel I am in a shape to make a difference."

On Ekitike sending off: "I am sure he just wasn't aware of being on a yellow in that moment. Sometimes when you score a goal you are in that moment. Of course it is unfortunate."

  12. 'A little step in the right direction'published at 22:24 BST 23 September

    FT: Wolves 2-0 Everton

Just for Wolves to get the win and get the confidence in the squad is massive. It's been a really poor start to the Premier League campaign so far.

It's really important for Vitor Pereira - yes it was much changed team - but to get a feel good place around the team and for players to come in and step up is big.

A much needed win and a little step in the right direction.

Liverpool’s luck is going to run out at some point right? Most teams can’t keep conceding equalisers and letting teams have chances to score. Fortunately for them nobody seems to have the quality to make the most of how shaky they look. They’ve not been convincing at all this season.

It seemd as though Chelsea would need a moment of brilliance after the first half to spark something off, particularly after the first half because they were second best all over the park. And George's goal did that.

But this is what you get as a league one side going up against a top Premier League side, that quality, it's just a split second. They will not have to come up against that for the rest of the season.

George's goal changed the momentum of the game. You could see the belief creeping back into the Chelsea players and it did really rock Lincoln.

  16. 'A real scare for Chelsea'published at 22:12 BST 23 September

    FT: Lincoln 1-2 Chelsea

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at Sincil Bank

Chelsea got a real scare but credit to them and Enzo Maresca, they were put under severe pressure and real physicality. They will get on the coach tonight and know that they have been in one hell of a game.

  17. 'Frustrating'published at 22:05 BST 23 September

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton boss Will Still, speaking to ITV Sport: "We played well in parts. We stood up. It sums up our start to the season and where it is going wrong for us.

"I am pleased with how we reacted but it is frustrating. We show potential and a lot of good will but you've shot yourself in the foot by conceding the first one.

"We need to keep at it. We are starting to see a lot of good things. I know it is slow progress. Head up and chin up, keep hammering that nail on the head and I am sure we will click into gear."

Dumb move by Ekitike, and handing Isak a golden opportunity to take his place in the starting XI.

I don't know if Maresca is one for the hairdryer treatment type or volleying teacups everywhere, but he sent his players out early after half time.

He was clearly peeved to send them out so early, Lincoln were out three or four minutes after.

Chelsea saw it through pretty well in the end. It was a good win against a hardened, streetwise, battling Lincoln side.
